I've known Russ & Daughters' Mark Federman and his family ever since I came to New York 32 years ago. When I knew very few people here I used to come to Russ & Daughters to kibitz and just feel like I belonged somewhere. It's a place I still visit for shelter from any storm—and for the company and the Russ family's incredible food. They know smoked fish like very few other people in this world.

I'm a Connecticut native who visited New York often as a kid. I was there often as an adult but the food nostalgia comes from my childhood. This was for my family the way to celebrate so we'd head there and go to the theater, the ballet, the symphony (Lennie!) and do all the tourist stuff. I'm not a native, though I live with one who still pines for pastrami sammiches, knishes, all those things (they're not common where we live now) but what I crave from New York, besides a Shirley Temple at the Rainbow Room (while mom and dad had whisky sours) is, alas, cheesecake. Plain perfect, nothing in it or on it from Sardi's. Thank you very much. No chocolate, no sauce. Of all the greats that come to mind - the BEST bagels in the world, all the deli meats, the herring, the onion rolls, it's that pure pristine amazing slice of cheesecake for me.

Didn't realize that we could enjoy New York brunch food in Texas. Guess it would have to be barbecue beef with lots of sauce on a slice of white bread.

Gotta go with the consensus and say Bagel and cream cheese. Add a side of cooked onions and mushrooms to mine, please. Oh, and a cup of fresh squeezed grapefruit juice. :)
