Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Southside Market Sausage

Every day through January 1 we're giving away a crazy good food item on Serious Eats. Try your luck, and if you win, you'll be eating some seriously delicious food come the new year.

20071204southsidemarket.jpgWhen winter draws near, I start thinking about sausage. (Actually, I think about sausage year-round.) About the best, juiciest, meatiest, just-smoky-enough sausage I know is the sausage the Bracewell family makes and serves at their phenomenal Texas barbecue joint the Southside Market. The Bracewells are a generously spirited bunch, so they've given us ten pound packages of their incomparable sausage to give away as part of the Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway. Win and you can have your very own Texas barbecue sausage holiday party. Doesn't that sound good? Ed Levine

To enter: Tell us what your favorite barbecue joint is.

You have until 3 p.m. ET tomorrow (December 14) to enter. One winner will be chosen at random from among the commenters. Contest winners are limited to residents of the continental U.S., and you can only win once during the duration of the Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway contest. The standard Serious Eats contest rules apply.

Jang Tuh Sutbulgui. Ok, that's korean BBQ.

that's really simple, there's only 2 places to go in the dallas-fort worth area.
Clarks in Tioga, TX and The Smokehouse in Lindsey, TX

Clarks makes and sells their own sauce, plus always seems to be in those BBQ books of places you need to go to, plus they have their own helicopter pad and the Smokehouse has good food that is really inexpensive and an elderly waitress that can can tell the dirtiest jokes and make you laugh the whole time you're there.

Rocklands in Washington, DC

It doesn't exist any more, but it was the Branding Iron in Downers Grove, Illinois.

Two:
Redbones, in Davis Square, Somerville, MA.
and Zingerman's Roadhouse, in Ann Arbor, MI.

Bourbon BBQ in Wyckoff, NJ

Blue smoke in NYC

When I'm lucky enough to be near there, City Market in Luling, TX. For local barbeque, I like the Smoke Station here in Savannah.

In the spirit of being local, Beale Street BBQ here in Portland, ME is quite awesome, and I'm normally not an American BBQ kind of fan. But it is tempting to do what simon did and start naming other ethnic barbecue places...=P

sadly I have not discovered a truly great barbeque joint in South Bend,IN, but i do love the rib tips at fast food joint called King Gyros...can't go wrong for $5. Other than that my own kitchen.

Walter Gray's Tower Bar-B-Q in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, where a 6" sandwich of BBQ pork, beef, chicken, hot link or Polish sausage is five bucks.

shoneyjoe is pretty close. Redbones has a good atmosphere and good beer but the best barbecue around boston is Blue Ribbon in Arlington and West Newton. People say that Bullocks in Durham, NC is the best - I can tell you Blue Ribbon is better.

City Market Luling, TX

Beef n' Bun Houston, TX on Long Point. Their BBQ is really good and inexpensive plus they make the best French Fries in the world.

Sadly there aren't any outstanding BBQ joints in Minneapolis. I would have to say my favorite is Famous Daves. We live a few doors down and can smell bacon outside any time of the day, gotta love it. :)

the brisket at Hill Country is awesome.

the BBQ ribs at Brother Jonny's in NYC. amaaazing.

Harold's Barbecue in Atlanta/Jonesboro. Been there since 1947 - looks like you need a tetanus shot to open the door but the best 'cue in the city.

Sonny's Real Pit BBQ - All over the southeast:

Ciao,

Paulie Gee

I do love some elgin hot guts, but I got to go with Lockhart on this one and say Smitty's, née Kreuz's.

But here in NC, Allen & Son is surely up there on the list.

thanks

Goode Company Barbecue in Houston Texas!
Lived there 18 years and can still taste it now.........in Alabama.
I now order from 1-800-AIR-RIBS
Best sausage on the planet!

Bullock's in Durham, NC is the epitome of eastern NC BBQ for me. I like 'em so much that they catered my wedding!

B's Barbecue in Greenville, NC is also delicious, and I admit Wilber's in Goldsboro, NC also holds a special place in my heart (for that was where I lost my BBQ virginity).

These days, my favorite BBQ joint is my kitchen - Virginians around here just can't seem to get the 'cue right.

Muddy River Smokehosue in Portsmouth, NH

likely not comparable to really good bbq but it's where i had my first pulled pork!

My favorite barbecue joint is B's outside Greenville, NC. They have a strange operating schedule because they are closed on Monday and during the rest of the week they open at 11 am and close when that day's cooking is sold. The secret is to get there early and you will be rewarded with the best Eastern NC barbecue around.

Anyplace that features BBQ animal flesh should qualify, but my current favorite is Hill Country.

Duke's Station in Pittsburgh. Melt-in-your-mouth baby backs with kicker sauce. There are other good ones, but this is our go-to.

I just drove cross-country and had amazing barbecue at Arthur Bryant's in Kansas City. YUM..

I liked Dinosaur in Syracuse.

Urban BBQ here in MD

I live in the Boston Suburbs...We have no good BBQ

arthur bryants in KC... the original one.

Well, my own? Not that I'm famous or anything, but I do make me a mean bbq sauce!

Hickory Hollow in Palmetto Florida - it rocks!

Dinosaur in Rochester or Capital Q in Albany

I'm gonna go with Smitty's in Lockhart, TX, mostly for....man, well for everything.

The Dinosaur in Syracuse. And it has to be Syracuse.

Hmm - that's easy! Whatever BBQ Joint is closest!

- Rudy's in Austin, TX when it's delivered monthly for company lunch.
- Stubb's in Austin, TX when a great music show is accompanied by a deliciouis pulled-pork sandwich.
Here in the great Pacific NW - it's The Russell Street Bar.B.Que in Portland!

Hill Country

Smokin' Al's, in Bay Shore, New York - sooooo good. Who knew you could find good 'que on Long Island?

Bubbalou's in Orlando is my local place, but the best 'cue I've ever had was probably at The Georgia Pig.

One Eyed Jacks, Lockport NY - Smoked chicken wings!!! Amazing

evertt & jones, oakland, ca

rocklands, d.c.

Staten's in Prospect, KY

You've never had BBQ until you've eaten at The Salt Lick outside of Austin, TX. It is unreal...and BYOB.

http://www.saltlickbbq.com/

I second the Salt Lick!

I may be a Texas girl, but I really love Arthur Bryants (the old one) in Kansas City!
http://www.arthurbryantsbbq.com/

If I were to get BBQ today, then I'd go to Hutchin's.
http://www.hutchinsbbq.net/

Grub Hut in Manville, NJ... gooood applewood smokin'

I don't go out for BBQ - the best is from my own grill. I love, love, love sausage!!!

Rhoda's in Monroe La, but its not really a place, just a guy.

Powdrell's BBQ, Albuquerque N.M., I've tried 'Q coast to coast, and theirs is the best hands down.

Salt Lick and my own backyard deck next to my 30 year-old Weber Kettle.

Blue Ribbon in MA

In NYC, Hill Country.

In Hill Country, Louis Muellers in Taylor.

Yes, I know it's two, but both are worth the drive.

I need to get butt over to Dinosaur BBQ!

I'm stuck in Chicago, but I'm happy to frequent Honey 1 BBQ on N. Western.

JL's in Pryor, OK

Lately, I haven't enjoyed anything more than I enjoyed Hill Country.

I agree about Lockhart (and I'm in NYC) but I looooved Kreuz Market this past March - Smitty's was excellent but the brisket at Kreuz . . omg.

My NC best friend's backyard

skylight inn - ayden, nc

Here in NYC, Hill Country. Unfortunately I have not had the opportunity to have bbq in real hill country or many places outside of NY.

The backyard when my dad roasts a whole hog. Can't be beat. Always a great party.

Depends what you need:
- burnt ends: Bryant's in KC
- chopped 'Q: any backroad shack in middle Georgia or coastal NC
- ribs: Dreamland in Tuscaloosa
And Beale St. in Maine *is* pretty good, too.

Goode Company, Houston, TX

Stamey's BBQ in Greensboro, NC. Make sure you go to the one on High Point Road, not the one on Wendover Drive.

My parent's backyard. Dad makes an awesome rack of ribs.

Swingbellys in Long Beach, NY.

The Salt Lick in Driftwood, TX.

Dinosaur BBQ

Honey 1, Chicago

Oklahoma Joe's near Kansas City and Russell St. BBQ here in Portland.

I'll second Harold's in Atlanta. Great 'cue and the best Brunswick stew in town.

......the guy that sells ribs he cooks on a home-made half steel barrel drum grill towed to a corner lot on Copley Road in Akron, Ohio. Seriously.

Winston HIlls ( he off the old Jets and L.A. Rams) Centennial, Colorado....Ribs and chicken to die for...and above all in these strapped economic times...an actual food value for your dollar....

Uncle John's in Chicago.

The smoker in our backyard...

Tulsa Rib Company, in Orange, CA.

RUB. The smoked turkey is delish.

For NYC, Hill Country

Bub's BBQ in Sunderland, MA

T Rex in Berkeley CA

Twisters and Chubby's in Caruthersville MO. Before that it was the Tennessee service station also located in that town. Vinegar based pulled pork sandwiches with coleslaw don't get any better than in that neck of the woods.

Ilive in the rural midwest, so my favorite BBQ place is my friend's backyard.

Shorty's in Miami, FL. Have to admit not much good bbq available in Miami.

Bo-b-que on Edisto Island, SC. It's only 2 miles from my house and they have this great buffet with the best pulled pork. Sauce is on the side and they even make their own pork rinds. The other is the smoker in my backyard.

The hawker center near my house in Singapore. :-) Char siew is my favorite kind of barbecued meat.

Not many bbq places around here but my brother is pretty handy with a smoker.

Have to say my Dad's BBQ makes a great meal.

Hmmm, being from near Atlanta, I gotta say Fat Matt's!

Bub's in Ma.

Henry's Hi Life in San Jose.

Everett & Jones, Oakland.

montgomery inn in cincinnati

Martin's BBQ in Nashville, TN.

redbones davis sq.

Sammi's BBQ in Grand Rapids, MI. I've eaten soul food all over the country, but this place cannot be beat.

City BBQ in Columbus, Ohio. The brisket is Amazing!

There are so many in NYC these days, but I guess I'll have to pick Hill Country.

I love Blue Smoke.

hill country

Favorite BBQ-- Nationwide:
Ribs-- Jim Neely's Interstate BBQ on Hwy. 61 in Memphis,TN (But Corky's and Rendezvous, also in Memphis, are in a close heat for #2)
Pulled Pork: Allen & Sons, Carrboro, NC

NYC Best Joint:
Rack and Soul, UWS

I'll go with four: Black's or Smitty's in Lockhart (for brisket and sausage), LC Best BBQ in KC (for burnt ends) and the Germantown Commissary in Memphis (for pulled pork),

I don't live in the continental US, so I don't deserve sausage.

Blue Ribbon BBQ

Black's BBQ or Smitty's in Lockhart are the best. Also love the original Sonny Bryan's in Dallas.

NY BBQ isn't the greatest so I have no favorite.

Smokehouse in Independence, NJ

I don't think I've had good truly barbecue in New York, to be honest! Rack and Soul is right near me and it's tasty...

Curtis BBQ in putney vt

Cooper's bbq llano, tx

honey 1 bbq

Bullocks in NC -- especially that bottomless basket of hushpuppies...

Bourbon BBQ Hickory Smokehouse - Wyckoff NJ

Crosstown BBQ in Springfield, Missouri. A local go to spot for great BBQ. Family owned hole in the wall that is highly revered in this area.

I know a guy that makes the best "que" in town. Matt The Butcher. BBq ribs to die for, boston butt smoked till it falls apart with a killer rub on it an the best beans i ever ate!

Smokin' Joes BBQ in Davis, OK

Dallas BBQ... LOL

uncle frank's in mountain view ca

Dinosaur BBQ in Harlem, best wings!!

Blue Smoke. I know, I know...but I do like it! :)

Iron Works in Austin!

Angelo's BBQ in Ft Worth.

I wish I had a place 1/10th as good up here in NH. I've learned that, unfortunately, almost any claims of good BBQ up here have to be treated with extreme skepticism. :(

Country's BBQ, Columbus, GA

When visiting my hometown of Houston: Goode Company.
Here in Seattle? Dixie's, but it just doesn't compare.

Love those ribs at the Rendevous in Memphis!

brisket sammich (with charred scallions!) at rocklands, near my brother's place (on or just off wisconsin ave in dc..)

In Saint Paul, MN The best 'que is definately at "Big Daddy's Saturday Barbecue."

Love the Southside in Elgin ... once did a horse-sitting gig for a friend living there.
Sonny Bryan's in Dallas....
The Salt Lick.....
*sob* I miss Texas!

Knotty Pine in Sand Springs, OK.

KBQ in Bowie, Maryland

Fox Bros. on DeKalb Avenue in Atlanta has surpassed the other local Q institutions in the past year or so.

In NYC, Hill Country!

Oklahoma Joe's in Kansas City

I lived in Memphis for 3 years. I crave no pork like a Payne's chopped sandwich.

There's not much good in my immediate area. I loved Smoke Daddy in Chicago.

jimbo's bbq, tampa, florida

Oklahoma Joe's in KCMO

Prasek's Smokehouse in El Campo Texas. They have excellent bar-b-que and jerky. Give them a try praseks.com.

Payne's in Memphis

BBQ Pit in Merced, CA

Sadly, I haven't found anything in my area.

Without doubt, only went once, but worth writing about it:
" Kreuz Market ,619 N. Colorado St., Lockhart, TX
(512) 398-2361

No doubt.... Salt Lick!

Smittys in Lockhart for the Sausage...
In town I have to go to Thelmas BBQ on Long Point.

This week our favorite bbq joint is Goody Cole's in Brentwood, NH.

But we're headed to Memphis next week so that is probably going to change...

Whole Hog or Sim's here in Little Rock.

Kreutz Market in Lockhart, Tx, but the Salt Lick in Driftwood is more fun. I'd sure love to win these sausages, I'm a misplaced Texan a long way from Austin now.

My favorite BBQ joint is the one that I use the most napkins at. I love to have the juices and sauce dripping from my mouth. I have eaten at the Southside Market and it is great! I live in Pflugerville, which is close to Elgin. I also like Iron Works BBQ in Austin.

Bubba Bean- BBQ Hudson NY

Hometeam BBQ - Charleston SC.
There is no mustard sauce here...

Big John's Alabama BBQ -- Tampa.
Mahuffer's --Indian Shores

Beacwood BBQ, Seal Beach, CA!

Gate's in Kansas City

For NYC, I have to go with Blue Smoke.

in nyc blue smoke

Dinosaur BBQ.

Blue smoke, fo sho!

Bone Daddy's BBQ right here in my home town. The owner has competed all over the U.S. (& was featured on a travel channel show recently) and has won numerous times for his fantastic sauce.

3 faves in my hometown of Kansas City:
LC's
Bryants
Smoke Stack Martin City

in portland oregon try Big Kahuna's BBQ & Catering

awesome...

Mac's Speedshop - Charlotte NC
awesome in both Pork and Beef BBQ - simply the best !!!

Durham's in Newark, DE...

Bad to the Bone -- San Juan Capistrano -- only decent place I've been able to find for real BBQ near where I live.

Also, don't love their ribs, probably because it's not actually a BBQ joint, but Houston's has a really tasty bbq SAUCE.

Dinosaur BBQ i'd say is mine

Lucille's in the South Bay area, CA... just for the apple butter.

Fiorella's Jack Stack, KC... oh I need a visit SOON

I have been meaning to try Tyler's Taste of Texas, near San Diego, but I haven't yet. Everyone says good things about it! Besides a couple of cheap, old timey BBQ pit places, I don't know of any other barbecue in SD.

Swingbellys BBQ Long Beach NY

Fat bob's in Buffalo, NY. Yum.

The BBQ Shop on Madison in Memphis, TN

Salt Lick FTW!

Urban BBQ in MD

Uncle Pete's in the Boston area.

My friend Chris's house!

Um, I live in Vancouver. That means I don't have one. And sure, you could argue that Memphis Blues is the best in town, but really? They don't have much competition.

Not a braggart, but the smoke coming out of my own backyard gives me the best Q I've had....come on over and let me show you!

Well, since Mexican food dominates out where I live, the only decent BBQ joint out here is Brushfire BBQ...or whatever I decide to make in my own smoker.

My favorite BBQ joint is the backyard upstate at my pal Stone's house... :-)

Big W ... absolutely worth the trip. North of NYC, in Wingdale (now known for it's BBQ). 684 to Rte 22 north.
Ribs, Chicken, pulled pork, brisket ... homemade beans with pieces of pork tip... SWOONING for Big W.
.

Here in the Frozen North, the only decent bbq is what I make myself, alas.

Caveman Kitchens in Seattle is probably my favorite, at least there. I'm also partial to Jack's on Broadway in Nashville.

Daisy May's in Hell's Kitchen

John's BBQ in Aberdeen, NC

Mikeska's in Texas. Their smoked sausage is devine.
