Cook the Book: 'What We Eat When We Eat Alone'

20090810whatweeatwhenweeatalone.jpgDeborah Madison calls her new book a humorous book on eaters, but I beg to differ. What We Eat When We Eat Alone is a beautifully illustrated anthropological study that happens to have some great recipes. In What We Eat When We Eat Alone, Madison poses the same question to friends, neighbors, colleagues, restaurant professionals, and total strangers: What do you cook for yourself when you eat alone?

The responses to Madison's query are a testament to Brillat-Savarin's adage tell me what you eat and I'll tell you who you are. You can tell a lot about people by the meals they choose to make for themselves alone.

The first section of What We Eat When We Eat Alone sets out to define the differences between the meals that men and women make when they are forced to feed themselves at home. One might think female meals are all salad and chardonnay and that the male counterpart consists of beer and burgers. The reality is not so concrete. Madison encountered many women who enjoy nothing more than a very rare steak as well as a fair share of men who embrace a vegetarian diet while at home.

What We Eat When We Eat Alone is a wealth of dirty mealtime secrets. When you aren't catering to other people's tastes you are free to eat exactly what you crave: Spam sandwiches with grape jelly and saltines soaked in milky coffee are meals that Madison's subjects enjoy on a regular basis. Eating alone means eating what you want.

While it's intriguing to read about the strange combinations that some people come up with, What We Eat When We Eat Alone is filled with tasty, quick, and satisfying dishes that have been pared down to feed one but could easily be doubled or even tripled to feed a crowd. The thing that sets all of these recipes apart is that they were created with only one person in mind—no pleasing other people's palates necessary.

Win 'What We Eat When We Eat Alone'

Every day this week we will share a recipe from What We Eat When We Eat Alone. This week's menu will include everything from satisfying solo snacks such as pimento cheese and tuna spread with capers to hearty fortifiers like potato and green chile stew and polenta smothered with braised greens. Fear not, desserts for one will be well-represented; a recipe for chocolate mousse with cardamom seeds will make you think twice before reaching for that pint of ice cream in your freezer.

Thanks to the generosity of the folks over at Gibbs Smith Publishing, we are giving away five (5) copies of What We Eat When We Eat Alone this week. All you have to do is tell us what you eat when you are alone in the comments section below.

Five (5) people will be chosen at random among the eligible comments below. We're sorry, but entry is only open to residents of the U.S. and Canada. Comments will close Monday, August 24 at noon ET. The standard Serious Eats contest rules apply.

lately its been a smoothie and something salty like fries or scrambled eggs.

kale + garlic sautee, eaten along side one, cold, solitary tofu pup.

Frequently I can garbage pail some leftovers, but if there aren't any left, then I'll often boil up a package of Ramen and mix a spoonful of peanut butter into the noodles to make something that is almost but not completely unlike sesame noodles.

Usually some kind of cooked vegetable and then a ton of Greek yogurt, cereal and berries. Yum.

Whatever leftovers are in the refrigerator with a slice of melted American cheese on top. If there are no leftovers, then Ramen with American cheese will suffice.

All of this is eaten exclusively out of tupperware.

I eat writers who use "dearth" instead of (wealth?), confuse "pairing" with "paring" and who deny a semi-colon its rightful place
(; no pleasing other people's ...).

Oatmeal with a poached egg on top and a big salad. I'll also go for berries with Greek/Icelandic yogurt and granola

I eat scrambled eggs with American cheese on toast constantly. I also love to slice a Gala apple and eat it with peanut butter. And occasionally I'll make ham or turkey sandwiches with Seville orange marmalade or lingonberry preserves rather than mayo.

For breakfast, banana omelette. For any other meal I just take whatever vegetables and proteins I have laying around and put them in the cast iron and see what comes out.

Cheese toast.

hunks of fresh sourdough and butter. sometimes toasted. sometimes not.

Bread with American cheese melted on top until it's burned. I eat the burned piece and then eat the bread.

Vinta crackers.

A giant salad with whatever I can find. Fresh fruit, canned fish, nuts, cheese, leftover anything, tossed in a bowl with homemade vinagrette. Best enjoyed with a terrible chick lit novel on the couch.

whole wheat pasta with salsa and crushed red pepper is usually my dinner. That or some Indian food concoction like dal and rice

Eggs, in various forms, usually. Either poached on top of polenta or some other grain, atop fried rice, or english muffins, or scrambled. Or I'll make myself a big-ass cheese plate.

Usually something that produces great leftovers for lunch the next day! Lately, it's been sesame soba noodles, grain salads of all sorts, and za'atar flatbreads. I live alone, so eating alone isn't *that* unusual--I also love the freedom!

I eat a ton of raw vegetables and fruit when I'm alone (I just can't stop snacking on them!)

any mix of protein, cheese wrapped in a tortilla. ranges from turkey and brie to crambled eggs and cheddar. the other day i had leftover thai chicken with some shredded carrots. for some reason I eat less (a good thing) when it's in a wrap versus a roll or sliced bread.

eggs scrambled with whatever veggies and cheese are in the fridge. or tuna salad sandwiches, because my s.o. hates the smell so i can't make them when he is around. or pasta tossed with parmesan, olive oil, garlic, and red pepper flakes.

I'm rarely alone, but the last time I was, I microwaved some Morningstar vegetarian riblets and made a faux McRib sandwich with sliced pickles.

potatoes, bacon,
or maybe some chorizo,
kale and eggs sound right.

Pizza di Spaghetti!

Ratatouille (Julia Child's recipe) with some rice or farro. I make big batches of it and freeze it in dinner-size portions. 15 mins slowly reheating (from frozen) on the stove and I have a fantastic dinner.....

A package of ramen noodles, cooked then drained, seasoning packet, 1 beaten raw egg and 1/4 shredded cheddar, cooked until egg is done. Add a little cayenne and its pure decadence. You will just have to trust me.

I eat whatever I'm in the mood for: marmite and peanut butter, stinky cheese and noodles, soft boiled egg and mayo sandwiches, or just bites here and there of whatever's in the fridge

French-style scrambled eggs with sour cream and chives on toast.

If there's nothing in the fridge, I end up eating cheese on toast. I'm also guilty of eating frozen entrees.

Usually some egg potatoes steak onions and garlic all tossed in a frying pan together.

i eat... chocolate chip cookies and gummy bears :)

Probably eggs. I love eggs. but Dad has high cholesterol. Or i whip up something fast and make it super spicy.

frozen pizzas, cocktail peanuts, magic hat beer.

home made pesto on pasta or eggs or a sandwich!

lots of stinky cheese, prosciutto, and foods with fish sauce.

A bowl of rice and whatever leftovers are in the fridge.

Right now I am eating left over baked beans that are heavy on the bacon, and some potato chips. I am overdue for grocery shopping. I also make a lot of tuna salad because there is always some in the house.

Steamed brussel sprouts. That should answer why I eat these alone. :)

pasta! always good

um, last night the 'don't judge me' meal was Trader Joe's mac n' cheese with cut up hot dogs and broccoli mixed in. it's actually known as a delicacy in the hyper-local region of my apartment.

I compose something based on what I'm craving. Sometimes it's a quick garlic pasta with an egg on top, sometimes it's a composed sausage/cheese/fruit platter, sometimes it's a russian pickle soup, it all depends, but it's usually salty. :)

I'm rarely alone for meals anymore, but when I am, I keep it simple. Lately, I've liked slicing up a sweet potato, roasting it with some brown sugar and butter, and calling it dinner. :)

puffy cheetos dipped in ranch.

Breakfast sandwich...anytime of the day - fried egg, cheese, bacon on a buttery english muffin or bacon and scrambled eggs wrapped up in warm naan.

Sliced Brie on a Chicago Hard Roll, thinly sliced tomato and shredded basil, as long as the tomato and basil are fresh from my little garden. Rest of the year, cheese toast, tuna salad on saltine crackers.

My wife is vegetarian so my solo meals are mostly meat.

Anything on toast - hagel (dutch chocolate sprinkles), jam, peanut butter, melted cheese, scrambled eggs if I'm feeling motivated.

i've been living alone for the past week and a half since my roommates moved out two weeks before i do and i've been subsiding on rice or pasta with whatever i can find mixed in (peanut sauce, veggies, pasta sauce, cheese, microwave indian mixes, etc.). i find it harder to cook something exciting when it's just for me.

Campbell's condensed tomato soup, pickles, celery and cream cheese.

grits and eggs and cheese. no one I know likes grits. oh god, so good.

Fresh, hot white rice straight out of the rice cooker w/ pats of (real) salted butter melted in. Starch and fat. Total comfort.

garlicky fried rice with rice vinegar and a fried egg

Secret foods are big with me. A personal favorite is frozen corn topped with plenty of salt and butter, served over Ruffles.

Another is saltines brushed with butter, baked in the oven very briefly. Then you top those with a jam of your choice. DELICIOUS.

I eat a lot of eggs with whatever's in the fridge thrown in too. Pasta with whatever's lying around works too, as does any type of salad green. Occasionally it's nothing more than hummus or some other kind of dip with random pita chips, flatbread, veggies, etc. And when it's dessert or something sweet, it's the jar of peanut butter with a handful of dark chocolate chips thrown in, or the occasional spoonful fudge sauce, dulce de leche, sweetened condensed milk, whip cream, etc.

scrambled egg sandwich

Cereal and ice cream :-)

alas, i married a picky eater: all meal components must be separate from one another. therefore, when I eat alone, I make a pasta toss - either chicken or sausage, whole wheat egg noodles and a bunch of fresh veggies.

Pasta with egg and pecorino romano cheese.

When I'm alone I always consider portions / leftovers first.

Therefore, lately it's been a turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce, aoli, arugala, spinach and fresh cracked pepper on flaxseed loaf.
[A bit of a thanksgiving flashback!]

I've recently become a single-foodie and noticed this is the hardest obstacle!!!

I keep it simple, anything from pita/hummus to cheese/bread/olives

Just now I wolfed down some Gouda cheese and crackers for breakfast.

buttered noodles, tortillas with melted cheese, radishes, cereal and dried cranberries. not all together, but those are the things I'm most likely to get into when by myself.

scrambled eggs with grated cheddar cheese

I'm rarely without my vegetarian wife. So when I am, I cook meat. This weekend I had a NY Strip with blue cheese and grilled corn on the cob.

Tomato paste sandwiches! Plus, I make a quick sauce with a can of tomato paste and frozen veggies, maybe some ground turkey, and have it over salad greens or rice.

I also like to add canned sardines to chick peas, dice up onions, add in salt, pepper, chili flakes, top with olive oil. One of the most simplest, tastiest meals I've ever made.

It's embarrassing but...ramen noodles with butter

I eat whatever I'm embarrassed to eat in public. Usually greasy, and/or stinky. I love making spicy sweet potato fries with garlic mayo, because when I make it alone I won't have to share.

scrambled egg sandwich

Usually my dinners are pretty boring and sad affairs, even though I run a food blog. I save my time and money to make elaborate things for my website, so an average weeknight dinner for me is a wedge salad with blue cheese dressing, breakfast tacos, simple pasta with goat cheese, etc. All easy things with little cleanup.

Pasta topped with whatever fresh vegetable there is, sauted in olive oil with garlic and red pepper flakes, topped with parmesan, romano, or grana padana (depending on which the fridge yields).

BBQ chicken pizza.

Well today I had a tomato sandwich (Rudy's White Bread, olive oil mayo and a beautiful tomato from the neighbor) and a peach. This is a favorite lunch of mine, swapping out the fruit depending on what I have on hand. Another favorite, for this time of year, is to chop a zucchini into chunks, put oil, salt and pepper on it and roast it in the oven until slightly brown and squishy. I usually eat that with a bowl of buttered noodles. Someday I would really like to eat the zucchini and the tomato sandwich together, but I never seem to have both on hand at the same time.

My number one easy “make a big pot and eat all weekend” meal is: Pasta tossed with lemon, parmigiana, cannellini beans, pinenuts, and a heap of argula - or sometime I’ll just have a crusty baguette and warm brie with a drizzle of honey and dusting of thyme

But in the spirit of polenta, my favorite way to make it for myself is cooked with zucchini puree and parmigiana then served with swiss chard and almonds in a pool of pesto!

And finally in the spirit of “something I love but would never ever server to anyone else” is Chana Masala with a huge dollop of apricot jam and a side of cream of wheat with cardamom. Yum!

I like milk rice. Cooked rice, milk, butter, sugar, and cinnamon, heated.

secret eating is one of my favorite activities. lately its been sandwiches, a month ago it was omelette, and before that was pizza. there's also the stolen moments of snarfing down taco bell in my car after work...does that count?

This summer I've made odd combo dinners with farmers market leftovers. Small servings of quickly steamed greens, corn on the cob, and squash, not some odd. But throw in a piece of toast or rice, for starch, and a half-can of garbs or black beans or maybe an egg for protein, weirder. Filling but I'm not brave enough to feed other people such a hodgepodge!

There was one point in my first semester of college when I was too lazy to make anything elaborate. So, I would put some cooked rice in a measuring cup, crack an egg over the top with some soy sauce, cover it with saran wrap, and microwave it till the egg was cooked. Then I squirt a whole bunch of sriracha over it and call it a meal!

Whenever I find myself alone & hungry .....it's ALWAYS spagetti & meatsauce . This one dish comforts me more than anything else . I always eat WAY too much of it .....and am always stuffed and happy afterward .

Eggs baked in some kind of seasonal ragout is a favorite... and I definitely consume more chocolate and ice cream when I'm alone. It really depends on my energy level: I might make risotto, I might just open a box of soup (Knorr's 8 vegetable!).

A "picnic" dinner for me--chunks of cheese, crackers, pickles, pepperoncini, and little chunks of salami if I'm in the mood (and have it on hand). Olives, as well, and sometimes cut-up fruit or a handful of grapes. Eaten on the sofa with a book or a crime show re-run (like CSI).

scrambled eggs with whatever veggies i have on hand and a fruit smoothie

Recently one late spring day I found myself without my usual dining companions so I started picking out a few random things that I like and it turned out to be quite a nice little meal: Baguette, sliced tomatoes, slices of fresh mozzarella di bufala, basil, olive oil and a pinch of sea salt, and some cured Spanish chorizo on the side. Paired with a nice cool crisp rose, made eating alone for a night not seem so bad.

am I the only person who hates to eat alone? I find it boring....

Usually whatever veg I have around, and hopefully some sauteed greens with some sort of whole grain, or maybe eggs.

I go through phases--I used to make pasta with garlicky vegetables and top it with an olive-oil fried egg, but lately I've been going more the "picnic" route and eating lots of little snacks. I've also started canning, which means I always have homemade kim chi or pickles to make a meal out of when I don't feel like turning on the stove.

I take it upon myself to let nothing go to waste so when I'm alone I generally eat whatever is closest to rotting. Sometimes I get fancy, other times..not so much. Small game like squirrels are always a good alone choice, so are fried fish heads and noodles. I end up with piles of soup bone meat which makes great hash, and I've always loved spoons full of peanut butter for dessert.

cereal or onigiri with ume-boshi.

anything spicy (my partner can't tolerate heat); kale for breakfast; whole pints of strawberries in one sitting; grits with salsa and nutritional yeast; roasted sweet potatoes with mayo and curry past. the connecting theme, i think, is lack of balance - none of the sensible amounts of a few different things; more like pick one thing and run with it.

A simple pasta dish is what I turn to when I want a real meal but am cooking for just me - olive oil, garlic, herbs, spinach, squash, and pine nuts.

Bimbop! Tacos! Pasta! Fried cabbage in bacon. My eating habits, a little scattered.

penne with canned tuna, some tomato, lots of red pepper flakes and parsely.

pasta with anchovies, garlic, red pepper flakes, and a little bit of lemon. either that...or haribo gummy-somethings.

fried eggs on toast, grilled cheese sandwiches on really good sourdough bread, cocoa puffs, noodles with butter, cold cereal. soo... carbs.

A little of this, a little of that- I like grazing moreso when I'm by myself. Also, noodles- usually some sort of somen or soba noodles, plain with dipping sauce, nothing fancy but so delicious.

Two large steamed artichokes with a mayo sauce and a butter-shallot sauce. And then I get to eat both hearts all to myself.

egg in a hole, or egg salad sandwich (is there a pattern here?)

Pasta with smooth tomato sauce, butter, and lemon juice.

grilled cheese sandwiches, eggs with cheese, or steamed broccoli or green beans

Fried egg sandwiches with extra ketchup. Half white/half wheat toast, with plenty of butter and strawberry jam, strong black tea. A big bowl of whole wheat rigationi with Trader Joe's arrabiata sauce and crumbled feta cheese on top. Cheesy polenta for breakfast. Uncooked tofu, drained and sliced, then dunked in a mixture of soy sauce, chili oil, sesame oil and lime juice.

I love cooking, but it's just so much more fun for me with other people. So when I'm alone, I almost always stand with a spoon in front of the fridge: peanut butter, maple butter, jam, preserves, dulce de leche... On the occasions I go spoonless, it's pickles, crackers, mustard, and cheese.

Eggs over easy and a piece of buttered toast.

i like to make my own little cheese / charcuterie / olive / pickle plate depending on what i have in the pantry and refrigerator. with a crusty baguette, some fruit and a glass of wine, it's like a party.

Sauteed spinach with garlic and chili's on crusty toasted bread with slices of tomato. Takes about 5 minutes to put together and is a very satisfying meal.

When my husband's out of town, I eat food that my husband disapproves of....fattening things, like Fettucini Alfredo. Otherwise, when I'm alone, I'm a fan of grilled cheese sandwiches or cheese crepes.

rice, black beans, onions, orange zest and tabsco, topped with sour cream.

If I'm lazier, rice with garlic and lots of butter

If it's hot, then cereal with milk, sugar, and bananas.

Poached eggs on toast or sardines mashed up with mustard & tabasco. On toast. My family members are equally grossed out by both items. Or I'll dine on just toast. Ahhh toast. The most under-rated delicacy.

If I am eating alone, which isn't often, it is usually something simple and fast - scrambled eggs, omelet, open-faced tuna sandwich, BLT, etc. But, time permitting, it also gives me the opportunity to make something my wife won't eat...i.e. red meat. At which point I often revert to comfort food like meatloaf or pot roast.

Usually I will fix a ginormous salad with tons of veggies and various other toppings, but when I am lazy and don't feel like chopping veggies, I will always go for cereal. Not just any cereal though - it has to be a combination of all of the open boxes in my pantry. I find only eating one variety of cereal at a time quite boring.

Besides nibbling on every piece of sweets I can find in my cabinet? Haha.

I have a fondness for making different pancake recipes from scratch just for myself. Or sometimes I get lazy and just have a simple poached egg or an open faced "sandwich" (minus the bread if I'm REALLY feeling lazy.)

Middle Eastern Flatbread from Trader Joe's toasted and then topped with Nutella

Whole wheat pasta and veggies/garlic/crushed red pepper in evoo .... or peanut butter honey sandwiches on super-grain bread ...

Often, I will graze and pick on whatever food is around until I'm full. Things I will specifically eat for dinner that I can't get away with when the hubby is home:
Giant tomato salad with olive oil, oregano, salt and pepper. Sliced onion is optional.
Boiled edamame tossed with coarse salt.
A giant bowl of popcorn, sometimes topped with Old Bay.
Peanut butter and sliced bananas on toast.

Flatbread topped with hummus, sun-dried tomatoes, garlic and cheese, five minutes in the toaster oven.

It somehow always involves eggs. Whether it be having breakfast for dinner, putting a poached egg on top of a salad or asparagus, or topping off my ramen noodles with a fried egg, I'm a big fan of the cheap, easy source of protein.

Old-fashioned tuna casserole with crushed potato chips. My husband won't eat it, so on those rare occasions when he's not home for dinner, I make it for myself.

Otherwise...refried beans on tortillas with cheese, or pastina with butter.

Split a whole wheat pita and rub the outside with garlic. Toast and then broil mozzarella or provolone cheese on top, then cover with overeasy or sunny side up eggs. Salt and pepper. Yum!

Oreos with peanut butter on top :(

So good... so terrible...

Alone heaven- spaghetti with marinara, ricotta, and fresh mozz, cut into pieces. Top with grated locatelli, S&P.

some sort of grain (rice, quinoa, etc) mixed with a form of protein (tofu, egg, etc), seasonings, and whatever vegetables I have on hand.

Scrambled eggs with whatever greens I have on hand. I also love polenta but I call it grits and don't have to worry about all the fancy stuff.

Avocado and green apple chunks with lemon (warm weather). I eat baked potato with wilted spinach, garlic and oil and greek yogurt or cheese when it's cool.

This week it's been pickled veggies, cooked, cold shrimp, and raiding my frozen cookie stash. Oh, and gallons of iced tea. It's too hot to cook.

PASTA! Either spaghetti aglio or pastina with a little butter, black pepper and cheese. Both dishes are "too plain" for my partner, so when I am alone, I get to indulge.

sardines! sardines and vegenaise on rice crackers. also handfuls of blueberries, but not usually with the sardines.

no salt added green beans- the thinly sliced ones. I eat them straight out of the can, with a fork, with lots of pepper, standing over the sink.

Steamers, with lots of garlic in the broth!

tomato sandwich on a baguette with hummus and lots of salt and pepper.

or - pasta with lots of garlic, chili flakes, artichoke hearts, and parm.

yum!

My guilty treat is fried chicken, usually from Popeye's.

a sunnyside up egg with plenty of salt and pepper and whole wheat toast

Spaghetti with (canned) clam sauce.

Fried egg + grilled cheese + generous tomato + mayo = delicious sandwich

Canned soup. (I know, I know.)

homemade macaroni and cheese. Or I'll make a meal out of homemade pita chips and hummus with feta.

soupy, buttery tomato sauce with pasta, parsley and melty mozzarella floating in it. or a boiled potato mashed with far too much butter. i like butter.

pasta with sauteed onions, garlic, and peas, peanut butter on bread-sometimes toasted, sometimes not, bread or crackers with cheese, cereal, or if there are any appropriate leftovers and a tortilla, i'll make some type of burrito-y wrap.
or i just bake and eat dough/tastes of whatever i make while drinking :-)
i hate eating alone.

White Dinner--viognier, fish baked in parchment, smashed new potatoes. So soothing.

Whatever I damn please, that's the beauty of eating alone. It could be plain old pasta with butter and cheese, it could be a dry aged rib eye with all the fixings, it could be a sandwich delivered from the deli downstairs, it could be an 11 course tasting menu.

When I cook for myself, I look for "pantry" meals that are fast and economical, with a few ingredients. One of my favorite meals is a chinese style steamed white fish with scallions and ginger, topped with soy sauce and oil, which I can prepare while the rice is cooking. When I go to the asian grocery store, I always purchase individually wrapped frozen sushi grade tilapia fillets ($2-$3) that take only a few minutes to defrost and cook.

It really depends on my mood. Sometimes I'll make myself something nice, and enjoy cooking just for me. Other times I will make tuna salad or a frozen pizza (I not so secretly love frozen pizza) and call it a day.

Cheese grits or macaroni cooked in canned tomatoes.

Eggs, toast, cereal any type of breakfast item more or less.

Poached eggs over a couple of smashed tamales is one of my favs. Another is Volpi salami (their Napoli variety) and good cheddar on Triscuit's rosemary and olive oil crackers. Both are easy-peasy and yummy in the tummy!!

I eat alone all the time and its great because there is no pressure!

I really prefer braised cabbage with a poached egg on top (Orangette's recipe) but usually its a farm egg scramble (with whatever veggies or meat I have in the fridge) with toast and my sister's homemade jam!

raw fruits and veggies; almond butter and jam/banana sandwiches;eggs with salsa, cereal/granola with lots of berries, nuts, milk, and yogurt
To be quite honest, I love eating alone- I'm free to graze/ eat strange things. I also notice I crave spicy and salty things when I'm alone...

Italian tuna fish in olive oil and sliced tomatoes. Yum.

Graham crackers smothered in peanut butter and Nutella. Or pizza rolls. Depends on the day.

mac and cheese with hot dogs and peas in it or fried eggs and cheese, with pita dipped in olive oil and za'atar

Sandwiches. Salads. Cereal straight out of the box. Yeah I said it.

Nutella, spooned straight from the jar.

Sourdough bread, lots of it, toasted in the oven if I can wait that long, topped with the best cheese I have on hand and dipped in olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar.

last night was curry goat sausage spaghetti.

portabella mushroom and grilled onion sandwiches. It's quick, cheap, and delicious, plus it satisfies my "I should go get a cheeseburger" craving while keeping me out of fast food joints. My other alone staple is potato chips and french onion dip ...

fish sticks and sweet potato oven fries !

when i eat alone i usually go out for chinese
mverno@roadrunner.com

ice cream and cheese.

if i am actually cooking myself a meal, pasta with sauteed veggies.

Pasta with way more butter and parmesan than I would add if anyone else were watching.

Omelet with whatever's available in the fridge (veggies, herbs, cheese) or PB&J sandwich!

2 hard boiled eggs mashed with about 1 tb of good fish sauce (I prefer the 3 Crabs brand). Mix with hot rice. What my mother use to make for us when we were little.

Scrambled eggs, pasta w/butter & parmesan, or some kind of grilled sandwich.

For years, my favorite alone time meal was cooked egg noodles with sour cream and A-1 sauce all mixed together.

Fried egg sandwiches and canned clam chowder

fried egg sandwich: toast, american cheese, fried egg. melty filling goodness

Usually a scrambled egg burrito. Or peanut butter, straight out of the jar.

Bread with seasonal vegetables and cheese into a patiently made panini. You can pair it with pretty much anything in your fridge.

melty peanut butter on toast, english muffin or bagel.

Sandwich of lettuce, tomato, mayo, touch of salt and loads of black pepper on a toasted sourdough roll. Over the sink, of course.

Grilled Cheese sandwiches for either breakfast or lunch. For supper, I do polenta that is thickened in a vegetable broth with cheese. Parmesan if I have it, but any cheese will do to make the polenta smooth and creamy.
Even the cat wants a taste!

Sourdough toast with butter and honey and a nice hot cup of tea ;-)

A whole wheat pita (zapped in the microwave, it's the only time I would ever combine bread and electromagnetic waves, but it makes it so good and chewy) stuffed with a quorn patty and homemade Chinese brown sauce. Very strange, but really good.

I also love doing a fry up with any kind of carb (kasha, leftover rice, pasta, bread) some chopped up veggies, a little chicken, and an egg.

I will usually just raid the fridge and see what I can snack on standing up over the sink! But one of my favorite "alone" snacks is a can of smoked oysters. The next thing would be something sweet........

There's usually a frozen steak to de-thaw

When I'm on my own I tend to have things that my husband doesn't like: olives, goat cheese, capers. These things tend to be placed on a bit of pasta.

quesadillas.....made up of whatever veggies and cheese are in the refrigerator.......

The latest fascination has been tortilla chips dipped in sour cream and then liberally drizzled with sriracha (rooster) hot sauce. Love that stuff to the point that I'm going through three bottles a month, living alone. (Which, come to think of it...)

Crusty Italian Bread, Baba Ganoush, Kalamata Olives and Brie

Spaghetti alla gricia. Mario Batali's recipe is kick ass good.

I usually eat a whole avocado, in endless forms. It's comforting and fatty, but it's better than eating a whole block of cheese. In a grilled tortilla, with or without scrambled eggs. In five-minute salad -- two shredded carrots, dash of soy sauce and sesame oil, poached egg. With wakame, a handful of sliced leeks, soy sauce or prepared soba broth. On any greens with nearly any dressing (and, now that I think about it, any cheese). Whizzed in the blender with a little vegetable broth, soy milk or milk, and cilantro. That cool, creamy soup is cozy on a summer night.

Quickie quesadilla - corn tortillas with shredded cheddar, cooked on a frying pan (no oil!). I cook it til the tortillas get a little toasty brown and the cheese is all melty. I eat this with a little salsa verde. Simple and yummy.

A package of Udon noodles with cubed tofu. Hoisin dipping sauce on the side.

I usually resort to quick and easy comfort food eats, like a quesadilla, fideo or a burrito, a "dynamite" bowl (leftover short-grained rice with steamed vegetables on top, smothered in mayo with Sriracha sauce, nuked and topped with teriyaki glaze and sesame seeds), or just a bowl of cereal. Sometimes, I'll go the elaborate route if the leftovers are freezable, like tamales or lasagna. I guess it just depends on what's available and how much time I have to myself.

Cold cabbage salad with hot meat of some sort poured over - mexican flavor or picante style or Italian style and fruit for dessert.

Sometimes I will go all out and make an elaborate meal (including dessert), usually featuring fish since my boyfriend won't eat it. Otherwise, I'll just eat some really good cheese and a baguette for dinner.

bean burrito

raw oysters accompanied by a hard cheese and crackers. Dessert would be fresh figs if they were in season.

cereal/cereal bars, yogurt, icecream, fruit.

Hummus & pita.....eggs in every way, shape and form.

I go for the Mid Eastern platter. Humous, baba ganoush, grape leaves, cukes, tomatoes, some mint or cilantro, pita.

Now I have to go get those things because I've made myself hungry.

I have been know to eat several pieces of buttered french bread for dinner and a large glass of ice water with lemon. Its just easy and well, civilization was built on bread and water for a reason.

I am a cheese fiend so I usually toast some bread and melt some cheese over it under the broiler. I then dump an obscene amount of hot sauce over the whole thing. The dish is really just an excuse to eat more hot sauce - my favorite being a jalapeno cilantro variety.

Omelet. Plain.

lots of cheese and whatever fruit is lying around

ramen noodles w/ whatever veggies in the fridge (fresh or frozen)

Roasted beets or cauliflower (or both) with goat cheese. I tend to eat more butter when I am alone. For instance I saute mushrooms in butter when I am alone.

An omlette is good.

An omlette is good.

yogurt, whatever fruit I can find, and granola.

Omelet for dinner...and lots of chickpeas

Potato chips dipped in plain yogurt, with a little salt, pepper and dill added if I'm feeling fancy. Or a grilled cheese sandwich.

Pasta with pesto!

creamed tuna, comfort food at its best!

Last night (eating alone) I made goat cheese polenta with balsamic reduction. I had a massive craving for something that would stick to my ribs and something savory-sweet, and I tend to indulge my cravings if I'm eating alone.

Crack an egg in a cup, microwave for 30 seconds, and mush it onto two slices white bread with a slice of the kind of cheese that comes in individual plastic wrappers, Progresso soup, tuna fish or cold cut sandwiches (no veggies) with way more mayo than I would ever eat in front of other people, and huge bowls of shredded wheat with Splenda. I get impatient if alone food takes more than 10 minutes to prepare. I also love the rare treat of eating fast food in the car.

I'm bad - probably pizza.

If i'm at a restaurant, Pho. If I'm at home alone, in my pj's in front of the tv I eat instant noodles with poached egg.

Usually comfort food stuff from my childhood--scrambled egg sandwiches, BLTs (or sometimes just the B, with toast and mayo), hot dogs and cheese wrapped up in crescent rolls and baked, dipped in ketchup.

I've done the Ramen noodles with cheese, peas and egg. Burned cheese toast. Tuna salad with lots of mayo and some bagel chips, a baked potato with salad dressing (usually ranch), tortilla chips with baked beans.

Scrambled eggs with tomatoes and soy sauce.

Greens, usually kale, cooked with a chicken sausage and served over pasta.

Seeing as I generally eat alone, normal food just like everybody else. Although there are A LOT of leftovers.. really need to find more single serving recipes.

whatever is left over in the refrigerator

Usually I'll make eggs, either scrambled or fried, and have some toast with jam.

quesadillas...almost exclusively quesadillas. lots of salad when it's on hand.
btw...kudos to sidebernie for the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy reference.

pasta with tomato sauce, grilled cheese, eggs, toast with peanut butter

Bagged veggies from Costco (broccoli, peppers, pea pods, tomatoes, etc.) and hummus. Almost every day. I'm eating it now.

oatmeal & maple syrup

It used to be cereal and frozen oreos in my 20's but I've matured into peanut butter and banana sandwiches.

I'm ashamed to admit this, but Velveeta Shells and Cheese and cocktail weenies in barbecue sauce. Sort of white trashy, but really yummy!

usually some kind of noodle soup

I eat eggs - last night I warmed up leftover german potato salad, sauted some beet greens and fried an egg. Then I piled them on a plate - first potatoes, then greens and the egg was the crowning glory (eggs from my boyfriends chickens). Yum

Ramen noodles and Caesar salad made from scratch.

egg and tabasco sauce in a tortilla

cereal. or ice cream.

Usually a meal made up of a lot of snacks - crackers and hummus, cucumber salad, cut up carrots, etc.

If I have to cook supper and am alone, almost always carby comfort food -- fettucine alfredo, stroganoff, pasta with tuna, Kraft mac'n'cheese or something similar (see the trend?).

Fortunately, DH has strict instructions to cook enough for suppers so that there are leftovers if I am going to have to eat alone. I did not get married to do my own cooking!

I love making sandwiches with pita bread or bagels. Recently I've been scrambling a couple of eggs to throw on there :)

Malt-o-Meal; scrambled eggs; pieces of sliced ham straight from the package; grilled cheese, cocoa.

Popcorn and grapes!

Pasta, with whatever I have in the refrigerator that I need to get rid of. Unlike everyone else in the family, I'm not a picky eater. Just add butter, salt and pepper (maybe a splash of cream), and just about anything tastes good with pasta.

Depends on the day, if I'm having a chronic illness day, a bowl of cereal/oatmeal. If I'm feeling lazy, eggs in a basket. If life is good and I'm hungry, steak, some sauteed mushrooms, and a baked potato.

Granted, with my two little dogs I don't think I ever really eat alone! So the steak is as much a treat for them as myself.

I eat banana slices with crunchy peanut butter in a whole wheat sandwich!

Orzo pasta, drained partially and mixed with tomato paste and a little butter.

Depending on time: frozen vegetables with tomato sauce and red pepper, or topped with homemade pesto. Love making flavored dals, also lamb curry. Spring rolls are also great, and taking the time out to make them is a nice break.

poached / sunny side up / soft boiled eggs with toast and lots and lots of butter

Stuff with lots of butter or cream or ice cream or cheese- things that my family would make a face at if I ate it in front of them.
Also tinned stuff like sardines or tuna with onion and lemon sprinkled on top.
Or my all time secret fave- cottage cheese, tuna, cheddar cheese and catalina dressing drizzled over- mix to a mush and enjoy!

Savory steel cut oats with soy, scallions, and deli meat turkey. If you soak the oats overnight, they only take a few minutes to cook!

A filled, roasted green pepper. I use whatever I have on hand. I make up a tuna melt and add cheese at the end. Or scramble eggs and make a fritata. Ground beef crumbles, weggies and cheese, anything. Quick, delicious, and cheap!

A random array of veggies stir-fried up....then I cook an egg right in the middle of it all. Of course the yolk must be runny. I serve it over millet that has been cooked until it has the consistency of polenta.

I also may have eaten a PB and ketchup sandwich a time or two. :)

Roasted grape tomatoes tossed with pasta.

I live alone, so this is almost every meal for me. Dinner could be anything from a two to three hour cooking extravaganza to spaghetti with shaved parm, olive oil, garlic, s & p. Often, lots of salads.

I like to make brown rice with black beans, corn and salsa. (My hubby does not like it.)

small nibbles...bread with tomatoes or cheese or butter, fruit.

And a soft boiled egg with toast is somehow the most wonderful comforting thing ever.

Pasta with olive oil, pecorino and chili flakes or some form of potato. Carbs basically.

I like to try stuff that I'm not sure will work and therefore I'd rather not cook for others, but it usually turns out pretty good

I usually snack, but in a very "balanced" way. If I have hummus and naan, I have some yogurt and fruit with it so I'm eating all my food groups.

I also try out recipes, as above. :)

grilled cheese and/or homemade soups (tonight its curry coconut butternut squash)

Usually it's a bacon/egg/cheese sandwich.

i eat thick slices of toasted sourdough bread with thick slices of tomato on top and a lot of salt and pepper. and yogurt with some kind of sweet, spicy pickle mixed in for dessert.

A bottle of white wine, a scotch neat, or a gin and tonic...All of high-quality spirits and SO much better when relaxing home alone with a good book/movie.

whole wheat spaghetti with chicken, caramelized onions and parmesan cheese.

pasta
or maybe ice cream

poached or fried eggs with a liquid yolk, bread, and a salad or fruit

huge bowls of veggies. seriously. salads, sauteed, roasted-- the meals i eat alone often revolve around veggies. and there is usually hummus, mustard or pesto involved.

steamed broccoli, slathered in mayo. scrambled eggs with sriracha. moffles with pb&j. frozen corn or peas cooked in lots of butter, salt, pepper. fried rice made form leftovers. a fried egg on top of something... anything.

Sweet potato fries with green goddess dressing, pita breads with almond butter...might need that right now.

I don't make any distinction between what I cook when I'm alone and when I cook for friends and family. I deserve the best of my cooking! Whether that means trying out my own Tom Kai Kai soup, mussels with spaghetti, peppers stuffed with cous cous or a cheeseburger on the grill, I always spend time to make a nice meal for myself.

popcorn. fried rice. breakfast tacos. salad. chips + salsa. eggs with shrimp. cookies. tomato sandwiches. dumplings. leftover takeout. hm maybe I need to work some vegetables in there?

lots of stinky steamed veggies, beans, and salsa all mashed together in a pot!

When I was a bachelor, I totally survived on scrambled eggs, beans, grated cheddar cheese and toast. I still go back there if I'm by myself in the house.

a hot dog with dill relish followed by ice cream

Poached egg atop of a Gardenburger with salsa smothered everywhere.

the after-effects of spicy bean dishes (which i LOVE) leads me to eat them only when i'm alone. isn't that kind of me?

Whipped butter on graham crackers.

I eat a toasted cheese sandwich and tomato soup. jelly15301@gmail.com

Usually leftovers piled in a bowl on some lettuce with a homemade dressing, last night for instance was roasted beets over mixed greens topped with polenta and beans stewed in tomato sauce with a balsamic vinaigrette, the other day was roasted corn, sauteed squash, caramelized onions and cheddar cheese over mixed greens topped with black bean, lime cilantro dressing, salsa and guacamole.

Potatoes, potatoes, potatoes. Doesn't matter how you cook them.

Sauteed Swiss chard, or a ginormous salad in a bowl big enough to swim in.

A ridiculously large bowl (I mean the size of a toddler's tricycle) of roasted brussels sprouts with freshly ground pepper and sea salt.

Ghetto Chinese (preferably shrimp egg foo young with a side of fried chicken wings).

cereal with almond milk, fruit, or whatever is in the fridge

Sardines & crackers with a tomato.

sliced cucumbers dipped in sweet chili sauce, a bowl of cereal, finish it off with some greek olives (i make a game out of trying to spit the pits into the empty cereal bowl)

Bacon, cooked to a medium crisp with some sliced white bread. I eat the crust with the bacon. Then I take the fluffy white center and dab it in the leftover bacon grease in the pan. Mmmm, bacon grease.

Leftovers or MSF black bean burgers.

fried egg sandwich w/ eggs fresh from the farm on homemade sourdough toast w/ jalapeno hot sauce. Or steamed brown rice w/ butter. Currently, every meal begins with some homemade bread and butter refrigerator pickles- yum...........

Eggs - fritatta style with a piece of rye toast. Uses up all the veggies I have lying around and is a great post-workout meal.

Scrambled eggs or Marie Callender's Chicken Pie

Any leftover pasta in the fridge, then add gorgonzola cheese, heat in microwave. Or frozen pot pies. Or Trader Joe's pizza.

Heinz vegetarian baked beans, the best!

Most of my meals are taken alone, so I usually eat "normally," whatever the heck that is. Except when I don't, like the dinners of Cheeze-its and wine.

Chocolate, olives and whipped cream straight from the can!

Cold pizza. I'll order one to be delivered, then immediately pop it in the fridge and wait for it to get cold. Also, cold lasagna or cold spaghetti.

Frozen pierogi or spaghetti carbonara, if I'm in the mood for cooking.

Crackers, cheese, fruit, peanut butter, smoothies, and Amy's Mac and Soy Cheeze.

Ultimate fallback = cereal and milk. I am an ardent cereal mixer.
When I feel more gourmet I'll marinate some chickpeas with garlic and ginger, red wine vinegar and olive oil, and eat it over sauteed spinach.

.....popcorn, a large bowl, of time consuming popcorn.

I scramble some eggs, mix it with ham, potatoes and cheese, wrap in a fresh tortilla, and top with some spicy salsa. YUM!

Right now, whatever was in my farmshare, sauteed and served in a whole-wheat wrap.

Either Granola and Yogurt or a Peanut Butter and Jelly.

Anything as long as it is very hot and spicy. Even better if it has curry.

I tend to go for stir fried vegetables, usually involving curry or kim chi. Basically, anything that can be made from leftovers or can be eaten as leftovers for lunch the following day.

aerosol cheese on crackers.

kraft mac'n'cheese

Grits, stoneground of course, with some Pecorino romano stirred in.

veggie and tofu stir fry, usually from a Trader Joe's frozen veggie pack

Top two on the list,

1. Any type of noodles, mixed together with tuna in brine which has been cooked over a slow heat. I usually mix an egg and a tablespoon of bovril or marmite in there as well plus oregano.

2. Marmite and peanut butter and jelly sandwich. My friends think I'm crazy but I love it.

The rest are usually a crazy mixture of whatever I have at hand. =)

Slices of turkey meat, topped with red onion and bbq sauce, rolled into a tube. :)

Leftover pasta or rice with leftover salad mixed in.

lamb chops and a greek salad at night
Scrapple or bacon and eggs in the am

eggs and toast
ice cream from the container

I need some inspiration!

salty carbs, whatever form that takes!

Lately some type of veggie sub or wrap. All the fresh summery vegetables I can find with some sauce or maybe a slice of cheese and I'm in heaven.

Lately, I fill up a plastic cup with milk, stack a bunch of Chocolate Chip Dunkers from Trader Joe's on a plate, and eat until my heart is contented with soggy milk-infused elongated cookies.

McDonald's Chicken McNuggets. Sad but true.

Leftovers in any combination.

Pasta with lots of butter, black pepper and parm.

I take a container of WisPride Cheddar, soften it up and then add lots of prepared horseradish. Eat with water biscuits or on potato chips. May slice up an apple or a pear if I have any handy. And of course, wine. Or popcorn in microwave. I know, I know...shameful.

Cereal. Usually with added raisins, blueberries and bananas. Very tasty.

ratatouille and israeli couscous
add a piece of grilled/baked fish on top for kicks

There's nothing like a frittata with leftover veggies and cheeses. If I have fresh herbs in the garden, I blend that with some olive oil to make something between pesto and herb oil and pour that over a slice. The best part is that I then have breakfast for a week.

A sandwich and potato chips if I'm staying home. I'll eat out by myself though too.

Chocolate chips from the bag, pickles from the jar... peanut butter/honey/banana sandwich...

Alone, I like to eat Korean ramen noodles with an egg, cut up hot dogs, and American cheese mixed in. Don't tell! ;)

One of my favorite quick easy dishes is to cook up some campanelle pasta and when cooked just add some margarine, salt, pepper, and french fried onions. Delish!

Whatever I saw that looked good to me on a cooking site during the week! That's usually my experiment time. One of my fav's so far is polenta with shrimp.

I have an odd favorite: Crackers (usually wheat thins) topped with peanut butter and a slice of a mild cheese, like colby jack. I think its the salty-sweet combo that really gets me!

leftovers from the night(s) before. My job is to clean out the fridge so I get all the leftovers.

This is truly sad...I sometimes eat my roommate's snacks when she is not around.

My wife is a vegetarian. I am not. My wife works retail, which means at least one closing shift a week. These are "Meat Nights"! Bangers & Mash, Shepperd's Pie, Meatloaf, Pork Chops, Beef Stew, Buccatini All' Amatriciana...in other words, I make and honest-to-goodness meat centered meal with all of the trimmings. And wine.

Scrambled eggs, Instant Pho, grilled cheese, boxed Annie's Mac & Cheese with peas, toasted pita stuffed with sharp cheddar, sliced cucumbers and some mayo with salt +pepper. Basically, things I feel are not worthy of eating when other people are around but are still sooooo yummy.

I usually make an omelette with whatever I can find in the refrigerator.

I rarely eat alone, but I did have lunch by myself today. I made a salad with home-made bread, baby lettuce that I grew myself, cherry tomatoes from my friend's garden, pickled yellow squash that I grew and pickled myself, sharp provolone cheese that my Dad brought me from Philadelphia, Kalamata olives (from the store!) and olive oil (also from the store lol).

Fried egg sandwiches are nice. So are poached eggs atop black beans with dollops of salsa and crema. Egg salad sandwiches on sourdough toast are pretty tasty. Spinach and swiss cheese omelets are good. And sometimes, I'll even make deviled eggs and eat them all myself.

Vive the humble egg!

Alone, I eat Trisuits wirth cheddar cheese, heated under the broiler until melted.

Usually an egg on top of something (like rice or grits, or corn tortillas with corn salsa).

ramen with added herbs, green onions, etc or tuna salad, creamed eggs on toast....

Usually a salad, lots of leafy greens topped with a form of protein (hard boiled eggs, sardines, maybe tuna.) That's what I eat most of the time. However, when I'm depressed ice cream (sometimes as my dinner.)

bgcchs(at)yahoo(dot)com

Crispy Fried Chickpeas or Sugar Coated Chickpeas, when really feeling frustrated or stressed I will indulge in Oreo Cookies with Peanut butter....

I've made lots of full meals for myself - I think it is actually the most fun to cook alone because there is no pressure and it can be just an enjoyable way to pass the time.

But I've been known to do big egg and cheese sandwiches for dinner by myself...chicken sausage if I have it, scrambled eggs, and a big hunk of pepper jack cheese.

over easy eggs and white rice w/ lots of soy sauce & sriracha

Cajun boudin, crisped up on the grill, some saltine crackers, and a side of Kim Chee. I figure I may be the only person -- ever -- to eat that combination of foods at once.

Love it for a late breakfast if home by myself on a Saturday morning.

A slice of bread with butter and garlic salt. So gross, but I love it.

Cheeseburgers from the convenience store on the way home from work, extra ketchup and bread and butter pickles.

Field peas & snaps over rice, with a dash of green Tabasco sauce. A constant, satisfying, any-time-of-the-day-or-night meal since my husband passed away four months ago. He hated veggies.

Today I made some tequila lime shrimp over some spicy cheese grits with a small bed of salad mix....i used frozen shrimp, box of grits, and tequila...all with pretty good shelf lives cause i'm lazy.

breadcrumb-crusted pork cutlet on mustard covered soft bakery roll with green beans, and corn covered in bbq sauce.

Ichiban ramen with an egg boiled in it. Mmmm, college.

too many granola bars.

When I'm home alone, I dig around in the refrigerator & freezer to find something easy to literally just throw on a plate or into the microwave so that I don't have to cook anything.

homemade hash browns. or a pint of ice cream.

Salads, stir-fries, soup or a simple pasta dish--I like that they allow me to use up whatever's in the fridge and can usually be stretched to a few solo meals.

Cheese and crackers...or if I really must have a "meal," then garlic pasta.

Anything hot, fast, and greasy.

A nice caprese salad or sliced avocado with Krazy Jane seasoning.
When I'm really lazy, a bowl of Cheerios.

Most recently it was a few slices of thick, home made raisin pecan bread spread toasted and spread with almond butter and feta cheese. Hot, milk tea.

I live alone so I eat alone often. I love that I can make whatever I'm in the mood for whether that's homemade pizza, fish, shrimp or pasta. At least once a week I have a clean out the fridge dinner - sometimes it takes the form of a very veggie soup, sometimes its a fabulous veggie/egg scramble or stir-fry. One night I had steak and ice cream because that's what I was craving.

A sweet potato baked for a long time until it is caramelized and gooey. Preferably eaten with my fingers.

I eat alone every day (though not every meal). Sometimes I cook -- anything from omelets to curries -- and sometimes, like today, I eat chickpeas out of the can.

mayo sandwich with white bread.

crispy fried corned beef hash with an egg and steamed rice

I buy one of those roasted chickens at the grocery store and tear off the meat to put on toasted English muffins with a bit of mayo and salt & pepper. Mmm.

My favorite meal to eat when I eat alone - a piece of rustic bread, toasted and rubbed with a clove of garlic. 1 slice of bacon crisped and rendered. Greens sauteed in bacon grease with garlic, onions, and crushed red pepper...and an egg, once over easy.

I layer the greens on the piece of toast, the egg on the greens and crumble the bacon over everything. It's indulgent, but tiny - and i'm alone so nobody minds the garlic breath...

anything and everything dipped in a lot of ketchup. my husband finds this gross so i can only do it when i'm alone.... one of my favorites is cold pizza drizzled with cold jetchup on top..

A fresh heavy bread, sliced, layered with liverwurst and finished off with a mound of mustard. Must be open face and accompanied by tea... I'm hungry.

Cereal and ice cream...

any cheese left over in the frig - grated and fried in a cast iron skillet until melted and crunchy - yumm.

polenta, with crème fraîche, parmesan, and dried chanterelles, with truffle oil drizzled on top. And always dessert, preferably dark chocolate with a glass of armagnac.

Cheese and crackers or bread. Or plain pasta with some butter and Parmesan cheese.

Scallops provencal. Or a random assortment of sauteed veggies with a bit of good cheese and red pepper.

I often fall back on an old college favorite - a sort of ham salad generated by grinding together a hot dog, a slice of cheese, and a hunk of onion, then adding a dab of mayo and spreading on whatever breadstuff is handy!

I like to make myself a huge grilled cheese sandwich and a bowl of soup. Thanks for the chance.

A nice bowl of ice cream topped with potato chips

Snyders Sourdough Pretzels with some yellow mustard and a good ole Shiner Bock beer.

If it is summer: a melon - all of it! Or thick sliced tomatoes, oodles of mayo, and some Worcestershire on spongy white bread.

If I'm feeling lazy - toast with ridiculous amounts of butter.

If I'm in a good mood - something complex that I've been wanting to try that my husband doesn't like (organ meats, duck, anything with sardines or anchovies, etc)

We eat healthy food at our house 90% of the time... and add to that my husband almost never eats ground beef. So there are two things that I tend to eat if I'm home alone... primarily pizza. There, I said it. Pizza with all its oozy, cheesey, saucy, mushroomy, pepperoni-ish goodness. And every once in awhile I'll cook smashed burgers topped with sharp cheddar or pepperjack and avacado and carmelized onions. Oh... making me crave pizza. And that potato and green chile soup!!!

Well the other night when I was too tired to cook I had a couple of slices of nice french bread with a cranberry cinnamon cheese and some watermelon.. it was delicious. Other times when I'm alone I just eat my left over dinners or my favorite go-to after work is bread with cheddar cheese and salami toasted under the broiler.. so easy and so delicious.

I live alone and cook for myself so I often eat regular meals of all kinds alone.

Though when I'm lazy and don't want to cook too much - my recent default has been tortillas dipped in eggs sunny-side up with hot sauce.

I love popcorn cooked on the stovetop in my whirlypop. When I'm alone, I cook up a full batch (1/2 cup of kernals) and enjoy it ALL... along with a couple of cold beers.

Salty-crunchy. Mostly small bags of popcorn, but occasionally, it's chips and onion dip or Fritos and jalapeno cheese dip.

it's usually pasta. it's just so comforting and i can usually make a sauce using whatever i have so i don't have to leave the house for anything.

it's a slippery slope. i live with someone - when i'm alone i like to splurge/binge. usually it starts off innocently with a sandwich (one of my favorite foods), then onto tasty leftovers like cold pasta, then dessert (ice cream if there is any), then grazing for snacks / beer.....if there's something really unhealthy in the apt (like cake) that's definitely getting eaten. sometimes i finish it all off with a spoonful of peanut butter.

Grilled Cheese Sandwich made of Goat Cheese, Apple and Honey.

An egg and toast...cooked in some way: an omelette with gruyere and mushrooms, fried with feta and paprika, or scrambled with cheddar and salsa.

I'm a single vegetarian that lives alone, so I eat alone a lot. It's usually nothing spectacular, but I can't say I've never picked something up off the ground and put it either back on my plate or directly into my mouth. (I most likely wouldn't do this if I was dining with someone, depending on who it was, I suppose!)

Sauteed mushrooms or fried zucchini. My darling hubby hates, loathes, despises both, and can't stand the smell of either if he's around when I cook it. So I usually have to wait until I'm alone.

I like to eat all kinds of things when I am alone...There is a definite potato theme going on lately...it could be baked potatoes with sauteed bell peppers and onions on top with a little cheese, or it could be hash browns with diced green chilis and monterey jack cheese on top. Yum

some sort of gigantic salad that i eat for four days. lately it's been panzanella and thai cucumber salad.

Don't tell anyone, but, potato chips dunked in home made Blue Cheese dip with a glass of Pinot Grigio

green mango. sliced up. with lime juice. chili powder. bit of sea salt. mmm
too messy to eat in front of other people (must floss directly afterward) also too good to share with anyone ;)

It really depends on whether it's a snack or a meal.
Meals - I love to just make a meal out of a great crusty piece of french bread, some cheese (blue cheese, sharp cheddar, aged gruyere, goat cheese, etc), berries (blackberries, strawberries), some cured meats (prosciutto, salami), and a beer in a 22 oz bomber bottle, usually a Belgian style wheat, or something kinda funky like a saison/farmhouse ale, or a bit sour like a lambic.
Snack - I have a salsa that I really like to make, just throw some garlic, jalapenos, cherry tomatoes (or roasted tomatillos), cilantro, salt, and lime juice into a food processor. Then just dip whatever tortilla chips I have on hand into it. Also works well in tacos.

chicken francaise, or a baguette with cheese and fruit.

scrambled egg whites on toast or in a tortilla with salsa, and random bites of any sweet snacks lying around!

i usually make a few small things and just snack through the night. might start with some eggs then some salad later then something easy and carby like pasta or rice then some fruit later on. If that's still not enough then i reach for my signature snack, a mix of peanuts raisins and chocolate chips :)

Creole Red Beans and Rice with fresh sliced chilie peppers. Hot wings with lots of Blue Cheese dipping sauce. Salsa, lots of very hot salsa!

Olives, bread, and wine. Oh, to be alone for a meal...

Cereal or leftovers or eggs. Or something I can whip together quickly from things I have on time like ramen noodles, summer squash and a good amount of cheese.

Fried egg sandwiches with cheese and lettuce(?????), yup, lettuce on toasted Veront bread liberally slathered with unsalted butter. Comfort food.

Simple soup of chorizo, chickpeas and mustard greens garnished with some pickled onions a friend gave me. A couple slices of dense bread laden with good olive oil for dunking. This soup makes me so happy.

lentil soup, fried egg tostada with black beans and salsa, chips and guacamole, or the old stand-by: cheese, bread, and red wine.

Anything with chocolate in it. I have such a sweet tooth but don't like looking like a pig in front of hubby.

I eat what my husband will not-- artichokes, mushrooms, zucchini, or fresh tuna. If I don't have time, then I revert to my college days of bread, cheese, wine, chocolate.

Bleu cheese on Ritz crackers, iced sweet tea or strong black coffee, and a handful of fresh, sweet, wine-y bing cherries.

Actually, pimento cheese. I like to put it on toast under the broiler.

Eggs! Or grilled cheese. Usually hummus.

I usually grab leftovers-not really exciting-sorry!

I'll eat leftovers, whatever I can make quickly and easily, take-out, or if I'm in the mood, I'll make a huge elaborate meal so that I can have left overs and not cook for a while.

poached egg with some kind of toasted rustic bread; salad--and then i'll browse the fridge and cabinets for things like pickles, cheese, chocolate chips, nuts.

Nachos - chips, taco meat or leftover chicken, cheese, salsa and of course lots of sour cream and guacamole - it's pure heaven!

Chips. Salsa. Repeat.

I have been known to eat chips for breakfast when I am alone.

I'm a military wife, therefore always alone. last night I made blackbean soup and crusty bread. It was so good and something my hunny would have not liked to eat with me for dinner.

Pasta with tomatoes, garlic and oil.

Oh I have to add this one-----my co worker makes taco salad with all the fixings and then she binds it all together with French dressing and salsa verde. So basically a big bowl of madness, at least thats what I think....maybe thats why she's alone....j/k :P

Usually just spaghettini with sun dried tomatoes, olives, capers, chickpeas, and kale.

I eat alone almost every night, so - anything at all!

I love to eat really good bread-toasted-with butter. If I have good olives and cheese-so much the better!

Pasta with a anchovys and olives. Stick it in the fridge and eat on it for days.

I eat alone most nights, being a recently-graduated art student living on a minimal income, but my favorite (and strangest) thing to eat alone is an avocado, sliced thinly, and covered with a vinaigrette made from grapefruit juice, olive oil, white wine vinegar, and sea salt.

It's so healthy, yet it tastes so rich and indulgent.

Turkey bacon and an omelet. During the summer, a caprese salad with fresh mozzarella and heirloom tomatoes from the farmer's market.

scrambled eggs on toast, with too much truffle salt.

Tuna salad on toast with hummus. And tortilla chips with loads of sour cream.

A big plate of butter-sauteed zucchini over rice, topped with lots of freshly grated parmesan.

I eat what my mom called "Pipes and Soup". Not exactly fancy food, it is macaroni elbows and campbells vegetable beef soup. Comfort food! And cookies...

Actually anything I darn well please and whatever fits my mood of the moment. Most meals are enjoyed alone so eat what I like for days on end.
True bliss, no one elses tastes to consider or worry about.

I usually eat alone.
I've been enjoying turkey meatloaf with roasted red peppers and loads of pecorino romano; pasta carbonara; an enormous skillet of braised kale with sun-dried tomatoes, garlic and a poached egg on top; home fries reddened with smoked paprika, tossed with mushrooms, cheese and a poached egg;

Frozen potstickers from Costco or tuna salad sandwich or quesadillas.

I go to the frozen food section and grab the box of gyros. I love them event though they are bad for you...and I can't figure out an easy way to make them at home.

I generally go for a small plate of hummus or cheeses, crackers, grapes, maybe apple slices, clementines or baby carrots. If I have a few squares of Dairy Milk chocolate to end it with, that's even better!

If no one is around, sardines mashed on whole wheat toast with some hummus makes a satisfying and quick meal. Usually have a piece of fruit or some carrot sticks to go with it.

It may not look pretty, but it's nutritious, quick, and cheap.

i eat pretty normally. just moved out of the parents' house so only beginning to experiment with cooking. my criteria is anything that tastes good the next day or can be frozen. sauces keep well and can be spread across multiple meals so i eat lots of pasta. meat dishes that are good for dinner and cut into slices and put on a sandwich the next day are another staple. also made a big batch of chili that i split into pint containers and put in the freezer. nothing particularly weird here.

Lots of steamed edamame, rice and tofu. Pass the soy sauce please.

always something i can just grab and eat with my hands, lately tuna melts

Anything with less than three ingredients. In the summertime it could mean an 1/2 a fresh pineapple, a couple mangoes, a pint of strawberries. If I'm motivated enough to boil water, I'll eat half a bag of edamame. Two staple "meals" are oat cereal with dried fruit and nuts and a bowl of sticky rice with seaweed, wasabi and bonito sprinkles. Then there's always getting sushi delivered to the house...

I do what I call a "hot date with myself" and pick out 3 amazing complicated recipes that I want to try (appetizer, main, dessert) and spend a few hours cooking for myself. I even light the candles and open a nice bottle of wine. I try to convert the recipes to smaller amounts and enjoy the leftovers.

I was left home alone for a weekend two weeks ago and found myself making rice noodles with BBQ duck and Chinese broccoli. Yum, Chinese comfort food :)

1. grilled cheese and tomato sandwiches
2. tuna melts
3. eggs and toast
4. leftovers
5. not too yummy, but cereal and milk, or oatmeal, or a yogurt.

things that won't leave me with too many dishes!

A grilled cheese sandwich with a bowl of butternut squash soup with curry powder added. Deeee-lish!

Some pasta, usually penne, with olive oil, basil, and parmesan with a glass of wine.

For hot summer evenings, I love to graze on an easy no-cook platter for my solo dinner while I write a post for my food blog.
I slice up a few heirloom tomatoes and cucumbers, sprinkle with a bit of crunchy Kilauea black sea salt with a smal wedge of whatever cheese I have in the chill chest. I add a few Kalamata olives and roasted red peppers for the oily goodness and spice. With this I sip a some ice cold sparkling water with a dash of gingered simple syrup.
For dessert, my homemade fresh Lime Sorbet completes the meal and cools my palate after a long hot day.

maybe cereal.

Toast for sure! Or if it's in myfridge, cheese with crackers.

any type of simple egg dish

tons and tons of dumplings

Absurdly large plates of breakfast potatoes and pepper-filled omelets.

french fries and whipped cream. Not together.

I make eggs over easy and toast a lot. Plus/minus some kind of meat. For lunch and dinner too often.

Also, grilled cheese sammies.

Or noodles with peanut sauce.

cereal for dinner sometimes, and ice cream with tons of chocolate chips or sprinkles mixed in

tonight, ricotta/tomato/caramelized onion pizza and beet salad with poppy seed dressing, though it would usually be something like a banana with almond butter.

rosemary chicken pieces with thighs or drumsticks :) I like to slip minced garlic under the skin and then rub the skin with salt and rosemary with a dash of extra virgin olive oil on top..Then bake until the skin is crispy.yum

Cheese and bread and wine. One summer, living alone on a study abroad in Cambridge, I lived on it...and even somehow lost weight!

Ice cream, and lots of pizza!

ciabatta bread with stilton and a tiny drop of local honey- odd combo, but fantastically delicious!

Grilled cheese w/ bacon!

cheese steak w/ whiz, hot and sweet peppers

Almost always eggs. Poached with lots of pepper on top of a green salad. Scrambled and wrapped in a burrito. An omlet with sharp cheese. Soft boiled with toast sticks. Eggs are the perfect eat-alone food.

Any type of soup or whatever I can pull together with leftover ingredients in my refrigerator.

99% of the time I reheat whatever leftovers I find in the fridge, and on that one rare occassion where there are no leftovers, I'll doctor up a can of soup (sautee some leeks and butter to a can of potato soup to make a rich and creamy bowl), or I whip up a pre-packaged box of mac & cheese, or make a nice side salad. Whatever I can find that is quick & easy

cold buckwheat noodles or eggs in purgatory with bread

Ma Po Tofu with ground beef over rice!

macaroni and cheese!

Honey wheat pretzels and peanut butter

It really depends. I made gumbo the other night which tasted like comfort in a spoon (or ladle). :)

Cottage cheese with tuna fish and a little tomato all smushed together.

Olives, grana padano cheese chunks, prosciutto and fresh bread......and a glass of red to wash it down. I love it when my wife works nights.

Kale and shallots simmered in chicken stock with an egg thrown in to poach in the last few minutes of cooking. Served over crusty bread and topped with parmesan. Not very pretty, but delicious.

If I'm not eating at a restaurant, it's usually a salad of some sort, often with grilled chicken on it. Unless it's football season, at which point, I often whip up a nice batch of chili.

I like oyster stew - quick and comforting. - a small tin of oysters is just enough for a dinner with salad on the side and, hopefilly, one always has milk, butter and worcestershire sauce.

Prepackaged cilantro and pork dumplings fried until they're nice and crispy, packages of super spicy ramen with just enough water to dissolve the soup base and make a nice spicy paste, kale chips topped with truffle oil and garlic salt and whenever possible, leftover garlic and salt veggies from dinner the night before - best eaten cold. yuum.
...I may have a problem with salt-dependency..

It is so random: calamari sauteed with garlic and shallots, served atop a Caesar salad.

I like making something extravagant but not balanced.... a giant piece of steak and no veggies, a steamed lobsters or a huge sliced of cake and no "dinner" - I usually go for something extravangant and rich since there is no one to tsk tsk me for my eating habits

I don't mind cooking for one but I prefer to keep it down to one course

Brie cheese on pumpernickel bread, with tomato in season, without other times.

Pasta with veggies and grated cheese.

I first discovered the joys of eating alone when I was a kid ... I'd grab a crusty roll (we had good bakeries nearby), butter it, stick some cheese in there and camp out in the yard on a blanket with a book. These days I'm in love with egg-in-a-hole, cooked in butter, and a cup of hot tea with copious amounts of sugar. (Although admittedly I've also been known to live off of Lucky Charms for days at a time ...)

scrambled eggs with cheese and veggies with buttered toast or pasta with tomatos and lentils

Totally variable: nothing but watermelon, steamed spinach with poached (or hard-boiled eggs) and sometimes a bag of Twizzlers...

Peanut Butter. Straight out of the jar. But I tell myself I'm not that trashy because I at least use a spoon and not my fingers. But yeah, when I'm alone, that tends to be dinner.

3 or 4 eclairs au chocolat (Pierre Herme's recipe) makes one of the most comforting dinners I know. (That is, if it's not 2 or 3 raspberry millefeuilles from Lenotre's book.) I guess I'm revealing my nutritionally unsound practices.

Traditional Filipino dishes with lots of stinky shrimp paste and fish sauce.

A bowl of green olives.

Spoonfuls of vanilla ice cream alternated with small spoonfuls of peanut butter.

A grilled cheese sandwich with smoked gouda and apricot jam.

In season, a dozen (or two or three - I have been known to consume three dozen) ears of lightly steamed Silver Queen corn, buttered and salted, of course!

a whole pound of roasted asparagus with Parmesan. Or, out of season, chips and salsa.

I cook for myself like I would cook for a crowd (not portion-wise!), so pretty much anything. Why deprive myself of a good steak or some seared scallops just because I'm not sharing them with anyone??

Random combinations, such as a spoonful of peanut butter, then a corn tortilla with melted cheese in the middle (a psuedo-quesadilla). A piece of fruit. A yogurt.

If I'm actually preparing myself a meal, the sky's the limit. I will definitely make something I would enjoy but my husband would not...i.e. a vegetable frittata, eggplant, something with lots of tomatoes.

cheese and olives, toasted baguette slices with roasted grape tomatoes w/basil, maybe add some hummus

Fried eggs and ham over white rice w/soy sauce and scallions.

Winter bamboo shoot soup. Spareribs boiled until cooked, dump in bamboo, black soy sauce and fish sauce. Real thai home cooking.

Rice and anything I care to throw in. Three billion rice-eaters can't be wrong!

I eat Oreos and dip them in a homemade peanut butter frosting that I make. Seriously, the whole box and about 4 cups of icing! =]]]]

grilled cheese or homemade white chicken chili. yum :)

popcorn for dinner!

big bowl of ramen with poached egg, steamed veggies, salted pickled cabbage, and lots of pickled thai chilis. either that or whatever i can do to doctor up left over roast chicken. :) mmm chicken club sandwhich

Tortillas & hummis. More specifically, tortillas rolled up & dipped in hummus. I love it!

Leftovers, usually. Which might me actual cooked leftovers, but which also might might mean left over ingredients that didn't fit into a recipe.

If there's nothing interesting left over, most likely it would be peanut butter on whatever bread or crackers I might have on hand.

Being a college student I am always cooking for myself but my absolute favorite meal has always been simple oven baked salmon with lemon and some herbs, steamed asparagus and mashed potatoes. Mmmmm

the fastest and simplest food i can lay my hands on (i have no patience when i'm alone). bread and butter, cereal, ramen and boiled whatever-green-vegetable-i-have

I eat horribly when I eat unalone... grilled cheese.. pizza.. whatever has cheese

Sounds complicated, but there's nothing I love more than a quickie lobster bisque. Of course, I cheat by using lobster boullion, but the combination of the cream, white wine and the occasional addition of a can of lump white crabmeat makes my mouth water.

That, and peanut butter straight from the jar. It's a toss-up.

i eat leftovers when I am alone...

Whatever I can find in the fridge, freezer or pantry that doesn't take long to cook.

breakfast for dinner for me: fried eggs, grilled ham, and toast.

Frozen pepperoni pizza with Frank's hot sauce on it. Mmmm so bad yet so good.

Lots of nuts, and if I'm extra sure no one's around, spoonfuls of honey straight from the jar.

Tomato sandwiches. With mayo on both sides and salt and pepper. Nothing else.

A bottle of white wine, a scotch neat, or a gin and tonic...All of high-quality spirits and SO much better when relaxing home alone with a good book/movie.

Braunschweiger and yellow mustard sandwiches.

Pepperoni, cream cheese, and mustard on a bagel (not for a long time, though...stupid diet)

Cold plates of cheese, pretzels, pickles and olives. Maybe some salami if I'm energetic enough to slice it. So lazy!

Since Im hardly ever alone, Id say a PB&J sandwich. Thanks :)

I normaly eat leftovers.
erma.hurtt@sbcglobal.net

Peanut butter and chocolate ice cream, wasabi almonds and salty fries with honey mustard and cheese

Frozen hor d'eouvres. I do heat them first.

things my husband doesnt like, like thin crust pizza or asparagus, if its a planned aloneness. however, if its more like im really hungry and he is gone and no car, i like clam chowder, fried eggs and toast or mashed potatoes, yogurt with jams, chocolate chips, nuts, gherkins or mixed veggie pickles. as you can see, mostly small meals to a snack. i like to eat with him unless i can plan for it....

I live alone, so I eat alone most of the time. I really like the frozen fish that comes individually packed because I can take it out of the freezer the night before or even that morning and I don't have to worry about mediocre leftovers. I also like eating breakfast foods for dinner since making up a nice omelet is a quick and easy meal.

I usually boil some pasta and top it off with an easy homemade sauce consisting of tomatoes, olive oil, basil, and garlic. A little cheese on top is nice, too. kneecree at gmail dot com

When I eat alone, the treat is really in not having to choose something to make and not having to cook anything. So I snack on crackers, bagels, cherry tomatoes, toast with butter and jam and especially fresh popcorn.

Usually something light, like a salad or sandwich.

Chili dogs!

Italian food of most any kind. I have adopted it.

I usually make myself a big salad with nuts and berries in it!

A baked potato or yogurt and fresh fruit.

I add cheese to everything and tend to ignore signs that food has gone bad like mold... blame the economy! I'm a poor recent college graduate :)

When I eat alone I usually make toast and add tuna with a slice of tomato and then melt cheese on top. Yum

I like nilla wafers in French onion dip. I also like maple syrup in beef stew but once that's in it's not as obvious as the cookies in dip.

I eat macaroni and cheese

eggs with veggies and cheese in a homemade tortilla!

Normally Ramen Noodles, it's easy to make!

Scrambled eggs and whatever veggies I have

Salad sandwiches. Really, really big ones, with all the different salads that I normally feel guilty about taking so long to prepare. God they are good!

I like to eat meatloaf. garrettsambo@aol.com

Scrambled egg on a bowl of miso soup drizzled with hot sesame oil. At other times: hot dogs, mustard and deli dills with a glass of wine.

Miscellaneous egg dishes, which can be adjusted depending on how hungry you are (e.g., scrabled eggs, eggs over easy, egg salad, etc.)

I like quesadillas when I'm alone. I'll add a little shredded chicken breast, salsa and cheese.

I eat ice cream and candy when I'm alone.

Egg salad with pickles

I eat PB&J sandwiches often when alone
