Food Suggestions for Election Night

I have been on the edge of my seat for weeks - reading op ed columns, watching cable news and wondering who will win the presidential race. The big night is finally upon us and we will (hopefully) have a president elect before the night is through.

So here is my question: What are you going to cook for dinner or make for snacking on election night? What are the criteria for perfect election night foods?

Red herring.

Pork. By the barrel.

Obama and McCain cookies

No pretzels though ... someone might choke

I will have such a stomach ache, I won't be able to eat!!

Billy Beer

Peanuts

Bottled water

Anything with trans fats

Turkey or chicken ... basically anything fou ... um ... fowl

Blood pudding

MRE (Meals Ready-to-Eat)

... oh, and y'all have to play Donkey Kong while eating the food on ivory-colored plates.

@jinfoxx ~ I thought about that!

Sorry! Need and Edit Button!!!!! I meant @jonfoxx

Damn! "An Edit Button"!

as much pork as humanly possible at one sitting. Although Im in Ohio so I kind of know where the Electoral Vote is going to go.

I wonder what Joe the Plumber's lying punk ass is going to have? A plate of shit with a knife and fork, I imagine.

@ Iz...we got you, girl...no worries with the type-o's!

@izzy, go back to bed!

The thinguvit is, it depends on the contest you're watching. National stuff, I'd be pulling recipes out of White House and Blair House cookbooks, which actually have some interesting dishes you can make at home. Obama fan? Go Hawaiian. McCain fan? MREs or, even more fun, slop on a metal tray as in M*A*S*H. (I'm not a McCain fan, but that sounds like a fun buffet anyway.) Watching a local contest in the deep south? Ham hocks and black beans with excellent biscuits or cornbread. Paying attention near Boston? Crab rolls in split-top grilled buns.

So, @cmckenna, where are you and who are you rooting for?

@CompleteLunatic ~ Crab Rolls? CRAB Rolls??

@Chell ~ Thanks. I feel better now. ;-)

@izzzzzz ... crab rolls topped with mint, OK??? ;-)

Hello? Lunie? It would be a LOBSTER roll, hold the weeds.

@izzy, me no like-a da lobster. It be a 'spensive way ta' eat butter. An' I get crabby 'bout it.

Wow - I really did not imagine this would be a political post - but I guess it can't be helped.

I was really thinking of good foods to nosh on for a long night in front of the tele. And I was thinking comfort foods...

Eskimo pie, soaked in Russian Vodka - for flaming and ambiance IPO a real fireplace.

@cmckenna, the problem with comfort foods in such a situation is that comfort foods tend to promote sleep instead of helping people stay awake. When my wife was elected last year to a local office, fruits, veggies and snack foods were the norm, along with plenty of caffeine. Smoked salmon on small fried potato cakes would be good, maybe some fresh jerky to munch on, along with a good bottle of wine ... I recall thinking also of serving hot Reuben finger sandwiches, which didn't happen anyway. But the caffeine ended up being the most important part, in both coffee and pop.

@Lunie ~ In Philly, pop = gunfire.

@izzy ... I don't live in Philly. I live in Michigan, home of Faygo and their Red Pop, named for the sound the bottle cap used to make when opened.

And anyway ... geez izmaniac, how much coffee have you had today?? ;-)

LOL Lunie ~ I don't drink coffee. I am just sayin'.

BF's taking me out to dinner after we swing by the town hall...I know I'm going to be in terrible suspense all day!

liquid dinner.....booze, booze and booze.

I agree with the booze - I'll be doing Classic Gin Martinis ! Win or loose - after 3 or 4, it won't matter anyway.

roasted quail! (because I'm going to be home from college and when i'm home we eat what I want!)

then a late night party where i'll be noshing on party foods to stay awake.

i heard obama's favorite restaurant in chicago is topolobampo. i think i'll make something from one of rick bayless' books.
for those who wish to eat donkey, i heard it is Kim Jong Il's favorite food. and people call obama a commie. ha!
anyone have ideas for an election night drinking game? during the debates it was drink when:
McCain said 'my friends'
Obama said 'Bush'

@coolname ~ I believe we would be plastered in minutes!

If I were stateside, I'd be going to Ben & Jerry's and getting my free ice cream cone!

Leftovers of the chili which I'm baking right now (yes, baking...I'm trying something new) because my polling place is a teeney-tiny little community center of one room, so the line queues outside and snakes around the building. And it's supposed to rain in Maryland tomorrow afternoon/evening, so I'll be quite cold and possibly damp, and really wanting hot dinner if the wait is as long as we're being warned to expect. Which will immediately turn into a stress tummy ache, I'm sure.

I did get some popcorn which I'm hoping my husband will cover with caramel while we watch the results come in. Because if it goes one way, I'll want the sugar rush to support my celebration, and if it goes the other way, I'll want the sweet treat to console me. Not thematic food, but fills the needs of the day, either way.

Thanks for the insight - I do appreciate that "comfort foods" are very often carbs because of the serotonin connection. That took lamb chops and garlic mashers off the menu - I could so easily go into a potato + butter + cream coma!

chili - baked - sounds interesting.
popcorn is a great idea!

roasted quail is such a lovely idea. Festive and comforting.

I also think eating out sounds good, but I don't think I could enjoy dinner, I'd be glued to my iphone...

I have settled on two things - maybe three with the popcorn idea:

Last night, I made a lovely pot roast flavored with tarragon, so we'll have that for our early dinner and
I still have some fresh tomatoes coming in from the garden, so I'll make a caprese salad for our later night light munching. I am getting ready to bake some bread right now.

two bottles of red wine, riedel glasses, and a lot of deep breaths.

Thanks everyone

Make a batch of my Votemeal Cookies!

I made a double batch and brought them in for all of my voting co-workers.

I'm also going to a poll-watching party tonight where the Obama family chili will be served. And of course, I've got a bottle of Champagne for when the results come in.

Unfortunately I'll be chomping on pepto-bismol to prepare for all of the bullshit we're all about to be force fed.

There's a whole menu of goofy suggestions on Crumbs On My Keyboard (www.crumbsonmykeyboard.com)

@ CarolynEats....so, so true!

I am not going to eat tonight. I already voted and I am having such a rotten day, I had a Big Mac! I haven't had a Big Mac for 25 years! I have a tummy ache!!!!!

Big Mac's can be really hard on your system.

Free food! The boyfriend runs a bar, and he's hosting an Election Night party or which the associated restaurant is providing food.

@cmckenna ~ You are telling me! I need my stomach pumped.

I made arugula carbonara, in honor of Obama. I just posted the recipe on my blog, if you're interested.

I vote for (or against, really) Baked Alaska and White Russians, among other things.

BF and I walked to our polling place together to do our civic duty, and then stopped at the Italian import place across the street for delicious subs. We voted together for the president, but went our separate ways on sandwich fillings.

Humble pie anyone?

@Grifola ~ I'm serving crow - any takers?

Alka Seltzer.
