Home Remedies for Sore Throats?

Please do not gargle with hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is a strong oxidizer. Sure it will kill all bacteria...and scorch all your entire mouth in the process. If you want to reduce the bacteria in your mouth, gargle with salt water (salt inhibits bacteria growth very well, that's why it's a great food preservative), and thoroughly, but gently brush your tongue with a soft toothbrush (no toothpaste required).

Weekend Cook and Tell: Pancakes

@maxcriden, not too much beer probably about 1/4 cup, but the coconut milk is the essential ingredient.

@Cassaendra & maxcriden, according to my mother a perfect banh xeo requires a very well greased pan and some beer mixed in with the coconut milk. She says it almost guarantees a very crisp and delicate banh xeo.

Cooking with wine

Freeze it and use later in stews, braises, or in a sauce.

What to do with left-over ribs?

Sorry, haven't had my caffeine fix this morning:

The sentence should end this way: "and then cook up with onions and potatoes."

Or you can make a really rich pasta sauce with the meat and some marinara.

What to do with left-over ribs?

Make a hash. De-bone, cube the meat, and them cook up with oils and potatoes.

Making dog food

watch out for the salt. dogs aren't supposed to have a lot of it. my cousin's dog lost a lot of her hair because the family was feeding her dim sum leftovers.

jazzing up white rice

Add butter, basil and peas (fresh or frozen, not canned). I got the recipe from a Pierre Franey cookbook.

Spam: Better than we give it credit for?

One of my former Korean roommates made a Japanese-style curry with Spam and potatoes. It was very tasty.

I find that Spam can taste really good as part of an entree. But Spam, plain and one it's own as the main entree is not so. Millions of Pacific Rim Asians can't be wrong.

Perfect cocktail for a BLT?

Granola--help! Please.

You might need some sugar or liquid sweetener that would make the granola stick in clumps.

As for it not getting hard, the granola might be soft while hot, but it should crisp up when cooled.

Recipes from England?

Main course: Kedgeree...I know it's not a dinner meal but what's not to love about smoked fish, rice & curry. Jamie Oliver has a stellar recipe and I use a hot smoked salmon for the smoked fish.

On airline food: the best passenger complaint letter ever

All that great writing (with pictures too!) and all Richard Branson could give him was an apology for the "award winning food"? Those pictures alone warrant some kind of voucher or free flight.

Realistic B&B Breakfasts

My first and only B&B experience was 2 years ago at a little place on the West Coast of the US. The suite that we got was really nice, with a fireplace and jacuzzi sized bathtub. The breakfasts were so-so. We stayed 3 nights. First morning, the proprietor made us a crab quiche which was ok (I love quiche, but even I could tell that they used a cheap canned crabmeat), accompanied by some very good ginger cranberry scones and coffee for my husband and tea for me. The second morning, we were offered some sort of peach/apple coffeecake/cobbler, served with a fresh fruit, yogurt and granola. I lean more towards a savory breakfast than a sweet one, so I wasn't too excited by this offering.

The best hotel breakfast I've ever had was the full breakfast offered by the Hilton Hotel in Prague. The amount and quality of the food offered boogles the mind, but my favorite items were the silver dollar-sized yeast pancakes and the fresh baked breads and rolls that were offered every morning. It was always a wonderful start to the day.

For my own preference, a basket of warm baked goods (eg. croissants, bagels, toasts, scones) and some jam, honey & butter with a pot of hot tea or coffee is my idea of a great breakfast at any B&B or hotel.

Serious Heat: The Quickie Banh Mi

Any Viet chefs out there with a good recipe for the pate? There use to be a banh mi deli place that made the best banh mi pate, but the original owners retired early (having made their millions...no joke) and the pate has not tasted the same since.

Saigon Bakery is located in San Jose, California. Check them out if you're in the area.

You can sub in butter for the mayo and add a few dashes of soy sauce for an equally yummy sandwich.

$5 is pricey for a banh mi since I'm out in SF Bay Area and the going price is $3. My favorite place (Saigon Bakery), has a 3 for price of 2 special which cannot be beat.
