Low Carbers?

Both of my parents did the Atkins thing...they did lose a lot of weight initially but as they eventually added normal food back into their diet it slowly crept back on. The problem is that its just impossible to sustain, hard to go out or go to dinner parties if you're serious about it, etc. They did eat a lot of osso bucco though.

Brand loyalty...which products?

Nutella, Fage yogurt, Whole Foods 5-Grain sliced bread, Boar's Head turkey, a lot of stuff from Trader Joe's.

More than brands, I have specific grocery stores where I get certain things (Sahadi's for apricots and rice, TJ's and Whole Foods, C-Town for cheap stuff...the Brooklyn loop.)

the planet hollywoods of the world - any value?

Wagamama, which I think is based out of London, is great. I met a friend at the one in Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, which you'd think would be the most overpriced, touristy place on earth, and it was actually really good and cheaper than most of the 'street food' in the park.

Calling for pizza?

I did that at a bar once...I felt bad but I waited 15 minutes and my bill was too big to just leave (I think it was a 50 for a $6 beer.) So I just left a big tip on my next drink when I actually got change and figured it would even itself out.

What was the last recipe you followed? How did it turn out?

I forget where I got this idea from, but I read somewhere that this is the way Alain Ducasse makes pasta when he cooks for himself, and its fantastic.

Basially, you make pasta the same way you would make risotto. Saute garlic and onions in olive oil, add dry pasta (i like whole wheat), and then add chicken brother a cup at a time. The broth evaporates as the starch from the pasta breaks down into a sauce of sorts. Add the broth until pasta is done, add lots of salt, and voila. I also like to add diced tomatoes to this about 5 mins before its done, but they need to be pretty quality to work with the rest of the dish.

Italian vacation/restaurant suggestions

Theres a great restaurant rightoutside the city gates in Rome called Abruzzi's. If youre at all familiar with Il Mulino in the west Village, its owned by a family member of theirs, but from my experience its more relaxed - less Italin-American/Godfather, and more just regular chill Italian.

I havent eaten at the Essex Market version or had any super-notable Kenny encounters...but I di want to reply brcause I saw the movie a few months ago and it was great. So if there are any serious eaters around who haven't seen it yet, get thee to Netflix!

Walking into the Grocery..wanting a cheap bottle of wine...

I like VRAC, a French wine from the Cote that usually runs between $10-$14 depending on the store. Its white, it works well with everything, and the labelling looks really cool. If they dont have it though, I'll usually grab any Rueda, Rioja or Gruner Vertlinner thats under $12...once in a while you hit a bad one, but in general those tend to be pretty good for the price.

Or I just go to Whole Foods and buy whatevers onsale- and pray!

C-Town and Sunac- ha! The two gnarliest grocery stores I've ever been to. I stick to Trader Jes and Whole Foods and he Greenmarket if I can possibly help it.

Fage & Kashi

I cant eat regular yogurt because I dont handle lactose o well, and thus I discovered 0% Fage. And I havent gone back...its got such a great tang, mixed with honey....I could go on all day. Its just one of the best yogurts Ive ever had.

I also like the ones from Ronnybrook Farms, but theyre relly expensive compared! And Fage is great with no flavoring except honey, whereas Ronnybrook usually adds fruit before they sell it.

Help, I am dating a vegetarian!

When I was vegetarian (ohh, back in the day...) my mom and I both agreed about The Occasional Vegetarian by Karen Lee. The whole point of it is meat-free cooking for people who generally dont eat that way, so you'll probably find meal ideas that you can both agree on. (No small feat, because when I wasnt eating mat, my parents were both on Atkins, which pretty much rules out every possible meal combo.) But we both found things we could get into in this book. Definitely check it out!

Group Dining-NYC

If you want something more uptown, Amber is in the 80s, they have good sushi and teriyaki, and they're awesome with big groups (they have a back room, and while your groups probably wont be the only tables seated there, you can at least be somewhat separated and as loud as you want.)

Meal Planning - Does anyone still do it?

I plan ahead...by about an hour.

Luckily I'm only cooking for myself and I live in a city where I can pretty much get what I need at the last second...oherwise I could see things going downhill.

Sunday Night Supper

Oh wow...you all are so American! I grew up in New York and Sunday 'dinner' was always served in the afternoon- homemade tomato sauce full of meatballs, suasage, bragiola (spelling? no idea.) and pasta...you can still get this on the menu at a lot of Italian places as the Sunday ragu special.

Restaurant delivery receipts: Why don't I get them in NYC?

I've had to force places a few times because my job basically requires that we get receipts for anything we spend, but I never know why its so hard. I would guess though that once in a while yoy get a delivery guy who adds on a dollar here and there...its always good to check the menu if you're unsure.

Tasty toast toppers....

I do like toast with butter, cinamon and sugar, but I always put it in the microwave for a few seconds right before I eat it to make it all mush together...I suppose you could do with this a toaster over too if you want to avoid the evil micro-rays.

But my favorite is and will always be Nutella and strawberry jam.

Not permanently discontinued, but when the Cadbury Mini-Eggs come out every Easter, I buy at least three times more than I think I can respectably eat...and they're gone before I even finish the real hard-boiled easter eggs.

Eating in Denver

Um, Im pretty bad with names. But I do remember a few places: the Wash Park Grill was decent, better than average. There was a great Mongolian barbeque place which I sure is Google-able (How many can there be?) But my favorite Denver meal ws definitely brunch at a place where all the servers were cross-dressers...my brief internet search tells me that its called Bump & Grind but what I can tell you is...it was awesome.

Best places for cake in NYC?

Major seconding on Sugar Sweet Sunshine. Ive never tried the apple cake but everything else they have there is wonderful, so why wouldnt it be?

I also like Billy's Bakery in Chelsea, especially the pineapple upside down cake. The 'everything but the kitchen sink' cake always looks awesome too but Ive never actually eaten it. Anyone else?

Umm...theres also a really good place in Williamsburg, on Metropolitan Ave near the Lorimer L stop, but the fact that I cant remember the name has to be a subliminally bad sign.
