Japanese Croquettes (Koroke)

@Adam Kuban: I am posting under New York Talk so I am hoping to find koroke in New York. Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, and Staten Island.

Thanks for the suggestions! And for the recipe @Cassaendra. I think I will try Ariyoshi this weekend!

And just so that you know Sun Chan on Bway and 103 has it.

what's good food to eat as you study?

Any kid-friendly restaurant suggestions around Lincoln Center?

Nick and Toni's on 67th and Amsterdam. It's close by and they have pizzas and the like. Since she is 10 it's not like she needs a high chair or will be running around, so I think it would be pretty nice, and pretty New York. Or go to Fiorello's across the street from Lincoln Center. There is also a PJ Clarke's right in front of Lincoln Center by the Empire Hotel.

jazzing up white rice

Oh, you can also let it burn a bit at the bottom. It gives crunch! There might be some interesting Korean recipes for that, as well as Middle Eastern.

Grape Nuts

Give it to someone you don't like and who is afraid of the dentist.
What are Grapenuts anyway!

hey, I like the sangria idea! I hate to make it with wine that I like (which I enjoy by itself!)

NY Steakhouse (not Keens or Lugers) Suggestions

I say, if the issue is *perhaps* that you are not really into going to a steak house... but you are craving meat... go to a churrascaria for a meat feast! Porcao or Plataforma.

Cooking with wine

Thanks everyone for the ideas! I am not much of a meat-eater, so I will try it an onion marmelade or as a base for ragu. Maybe in a chili, I also thought... And not wasting a bit of it!

Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'

My own first cookbook (not counting the ones my mother had at home) was in Japanese. I couldn't understand the text but it had amazing photos of all the ingredients and steps. I got it when I was about 15.

Two easy ways to jazz up your white rice: Djon djon rice with Maggi cubes if you can find them (It's a Haitian mushroom broth); or simply, yellow rice with Sazon!

La Quercia Prosciutto - Where to buy?

sorry, I don't know about Prosciutto in particular, but I know Fairway sells some La Quercia products

How do you control your food cravings?

I don't.
I just avoid buying the foods that I usually crave. Because if I have them around, I will eat it. Like some flavors of ice cream.
I will try the glass of water and brushing my teeth!
Actually, now that I think about it... One way I control my after dinner sweets indulgences is by brushing my teeth very well for sleeping. Then I'd be too lazy to do it again after I eat.
So, voila!

Sugar Rush: Flourless Chocolate Cake at Jacques Torres

Oh boy.
Do they have THAT uptown too? I'm afraid to find out.
First was the hot chocolate, then the frozen hot chocolate, then the cookies, then the ice cream, and now.

another vote for roasting them, and extending the pleasure into the winter.

Pix or not...?

Yes, pix. I use cookbooks for inspiration, and ALWAYS modify recipes. In fact, I am very into Photograzing in this site now. That's all I need.

Eating out in Morningside Heights...

I used to live on 122nd and order from Ajanta. I miss it.
on 105 you have Silver Moon Bakery. I miss that too.
There was a little restaurant called A but I don't know what happened to it (Does anyone?)
Try the Hungarian Pastry Shop close to the cathedral (St. John the Divine). Amsterdam and 112 or so. Nice place to hang, although I can't vouch for the pastries themselves.
By all means, shop at Fairway!

Biscuit modifications:

Cold butter, and in my experience, whey. I only make biscuits when I have whey, which only happens when I drain my yogurt.
Indeed, whey is the way to go in baking!
Otherwise, buttermilk.

Good wine for a beer drinker?

Oops, sorry. I read the title but not the description. Vinho verde is Portuguese. Try a Vouvray.

From Talk

vinho verde! a little bubbly, and low alcohol.

Mark Bittman - Food Matters

I plan by the week, usually on Sunday night, using what's leftover from the week before, my farmer market's finds, and sometimes that thing from the back of the cupboard or fridge; by planning I can figure out what I need to buy to actually execute the dishes!

It never goes exactly as planned (you may go out, you may be tired, you may have guests, &c), but I think it helps to avoid waste, supermarket runs, and thinking on a weeknight.

I simply jot down the dishes on a stickie, and make whatever is going bad first.

I pack leftovers for lunch. If there is a lot, I freeze them. For future lunches.

Dining alone in NYC

Gotham Bar and Grill's bar. I've done it several times. I think Union Square Cafe also serves its full menu at the bar, and it's very convivial.
