HATCH Chile Time!

I bought about a pound and a half of fresh Hatch chillies from my local grocery store. I live in North Carolina and they were sold in the same grocery store about this time last year.

I've just finished roasting and peeling my fresh chillies. Found this thread when looking for ideas about how to use them.

What do you make with your cast iron?

I originally bought my cast iron skillet to make cornbread. I put the skillet in the oven and then preheat to the desired temperature.

I have also begun using my iron skillet to finish a frittata in the oven. It's great!

Weekend Cook and Tell: Anchovies

This probably sounds a bit crazy but I make nachos with anchovies (in olive oil). Actually, I made this for dinner tonight. Otherwise, the nachos are pretty normal.

What to do with paneer

Saag paneer (spinach and paneer). Quite straightforward to make and you can use frozen spinach. I made this very dish in the last week. Leftovers taste better than the first day too!

Who actually likes slimy food?

I like okra in all its forms. I also like raw oysters and uni (but it has to be really fresh). I can't really think of any foods that I consider slimy. I'm not that crazy about trying natto but that's more to do with the smell.

This may be relevant because I'm ethnically Japanese but I wasn't raised eathing Japanese food.

Breakfast/Meal Bars: Way or No Way?

Due to my job, I have to eat on the go. I really like Garden of Life Chocolate Raspberry Greens Bar and Pro Bars (Superfood Slam, Art's Original Blend, Whole Berry Blast).

I buy the Garden of Life bars by the case because it's cheaper that way plus they're hard to find where I live. I pick up the Pro Bars from a chain outdoor store.

I've tried Powerbars, Kashi and Luna bars but they either taste dry, artificial or have a super long ingredient list that looks like a chemical cocktail. At least the Pro Bars have whole ingredients and they look like food (to me at least).

Visiting supermarkets when traveling - doesn't everyone?

Wherever I travel, even to other states, I go to grocery stores. I find it fascinating. Obviously, I buy stuff, usually local brands or local specialties.

I also go to farmers markets when I travel. i.e. in Paris, France or other states.

What kind of Candy or Cookies do you make for Christmas

I'm relatively new to Holiday cookies/candies making. I made Andes mint chunk cookies that are really popular. I've also made so many sugar cookies that I cut into star shapes and also penguins. I decorated the stars with mini dragees (gold and silver) and the penguins I iced black and white with a silver dragee eye. All the cookies have been very well received. I'm taking a box full of penguin cookies to Cleveland for Christmas. I'm traveling by air. Wish the penguins good luck.

Snapshots from the UK: The English Foodstuff Lexicon

The first picture, of an individual Bakewell tart is pretty awful. It's a storebought tart (I'm guessing it's a Mr. K). She needs to eat a proper one, homemade. Those tarts are large (at least 9" in diameter) and far, far better than anything you could buy in a grocery store. I say that because my Mum makes super Bakewell tarts. Oh, I'm originally British but living in the US.

Lifespan of Lunch Meat and Leftovers

I'm shocked at how long US lunch meats and cheeses stay edible after purchase. Lunch meat I buy is still good after seven days or more.

Bringing food into the US in checked luggage......is it allowed?

No meat or meat derived products are allowed into the US from overseas. I bring back tea, chocolate, cookies and non-perishible food from Europe.

I for one, declare all food on the Customs form. For the persons that think they can get away without declaring foods, I have to say that I've seen dogs sniffing around luggage after passengers have collected it from the carousels so one can get caught.

Pizza With a Knife & Fork?

I was raised in the UK as a Brit and it's the norm to consume pizza, both in restaurants, at home, whether homemade or not, with a knife and fork. Even though I live in the US, I still tend to eat pizza with both utensils.

If you're looking for authentic Italian pizza, I can highly recommend Luisa's Brick Oven. From the outside, the restaurant doesn't look much but the pizzas are baked in an oven that was imported from Italy and having been to Italy, the thin crust pizzas are really authentic. I don't remember the exact location but your favorite search engine will bring you the results.

Serious Easter Artisanal Chocolate Egg Giveaway

My Mum's roast Welsh lamb studded with garlic cloves and rosemary. That and British style hot cross buns but not on the same plate. However, it's been a number of years since I've eaten that because she lives in the UK and I live in the US and I can't buy Welsh lamb here.
