Seriously Asian: The Passing Through Technique
Chichi, do you have a exhaust fan system in your kitchen? What do you do about the lingering smells from stir frying, etc.? I'm fortunate to have a window, but that's about it. I wish I had one of those industrial strength exhaust systems! I'll light some candles but sometimes I smell my dinner the next morning. :/

Cook the Book: 'What We Eat When We Eat Alone'
Bacon, cooked to a medium crisp with some sliced white bread. I eat the crust with the bacon. Then I take the fluffy white center and dab it in the leftover bacon grease in the pan. Mmmm, bacon grease.
In Videos: 'Julie and Julia' Sneak Peek
Her blog was one of the first ones out there so it's natural that she'd have a large audience compared to someone who started blogging now. Also, a digital camera wasn't as affordable back then as it is now hence the widespread presence of blogs with pictures.
Her book seems less about food more focused on her angst in general. I'm still wondering why she got a book deal and much less a movie deal.
In Videos: 'Julie and Julia' Sneak Peek
The book was painful to read. It lacked flow and rhythm plus it had an overall whiny tone about it. Not interested in seeing the movie, even though I'm a foodie.
The City's Best Soup Dumplings at Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao in Flushing
For soup dumplings in Flushing, I go to:
Shanghai Tide
13520 40th Rd
Flushing, NY 11354
(718) 661-0900
This place was recommended to me by a former roommate who was from Shanghai. They're usually quite juicy, with thin skins and well-seasoned fillings. They are smaller than the ones at Nan Xiang, but you get more to the basket. It's cheap enough to give it a whirl. :)
Sugar Rush: Pineapple Bun from Wong Wah in Chinatown
I like the topping the best. Sometimes, I slice it in half and eat the topping part separate from the bottom. Then I take the bottom, put the Japanese mayo on it with a healthy dose of "you soong" (dried pork floss).
So good. Yet so bad!
Forget Canal Street, the Real Dim Summing Is in Bensonhurst
@ Zach - My bad, I thought you chose the picture to post. I didn't realize the editor chose it for you. The editor needs a talking to and not you! :)
I agree, smaller is better for dim sum places. The large, stadium like restaurants usually have poor dim sum. By the time the cart gets to the halfway mark, the food's lost it's appeal. Dim sum dregs are a sad, sad thing.
The soup dumplings aren't usually on a dim sum menu because, well, it's not what they specialize in. It's a Johnny-come-lately to the dim sum scene. Old school dim sum houses aren't going to have that on the menu.
Jade Asian is as good as the old Gum Fung was but cleaned up. I recommend it for people new to the dim sum scene. It's far better than East Buffet. Blech.
New Tung Yi Fung is across the street from Gala Manor. It's a two story restaurant. The strategy is to get there before 11am and score a table on the first floor near the kitchen. It's old school HK style - you gotta know how to make your presence known with the host so the pushy elders don't snag your table. :)
Forget Canal Street, the Real Dim Summing Is in Bensonhurst
This person's saying World Tong is the best place to have dim sum and offers a photo of xiao long bao as evidence? Oh c'mon! Xiao long bao is Shanghainese - northern China. This tells me nothing. It's like saying that I found the best place for arroz con pollo and I give you a picture of mofongo. Different cuisines, folks.
Dim sum is classic Cantonese. If he going to say World Tong's the best place to have dim sum, he should judge the place on it's ha gaow (crystal shrimp dumplings). Many dim sum lovers use ha gaow as the benchmark used to judge most places. It's deceptive - a few simple ingredients rely on the chef's talent and skill to make them into a delicious dumpling.
Sorry, Flushing is where it's at. Jade Asian for newbies and New Tung Yi Fung for the hardcore old schoolers.

Cook the Book: 'The Bon Appétit Fast Easy Fresh Cookbook'
Instant ramen with poached egg and pan fried Spam. God help me but it's uber good and tasty. I drink lots of water to counteract the sodium content! :D
Artichoke Basille's Expanding to Five More Locations?
Oh please. They can't even handle the business at ONE location, much less five. It's all hype, no substance. They should get a handle on how to run a business first before trying to expand it.
The Garlic Burger from Hon Cafe in Chinatown
@milkyway4679: Boba IS a vulgar word that is slang for nipples. So if you go into a Chinese tea house and order a "boba cha", it'd be like saying "nipple tea".
Also, the Chinese characters for bubble tea mean "pearl milk tea" not "frothy tea".
(Yes, I am Chinese...)
Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Zingerman's Praise the Lard Gift Box
Fondest pork memory - having roasted suckling pig for the first time in a hole in the wall cafe in Hong Kong. My first taste of roasted suckling pig was awesome!!!
