What is the best store bought salad dressing?

It's not exactly "store" bought but I came across Wistoria Garden's Very Nearly Famous House Vinaigrette at the farmer's market that the Eastern Market, in Washington, D.C. quite some time ago. To date I have gone ordered FOUR of their 12-bottle boxes. It's amazing and I love turning people on to it!

Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'

I got my first cookbook when I was six years old. I still have it! I fast became a master of such delicacies as Muffin-tin Meatloaves and Chocolate Chip Teddy Bear Pancakes. Oh and, strangely enough, tabbouleh.

Cook the Book: 'Zingerman's Guide to Better Bacon'

I am not a fan of fruit and meat but bacon, sweet, sweet bacon, is my only exception. What DOESN'T bacon go with!?

Weekend Cook and Tell: The Temporary Vegetarian

DANG! In all my excitement I forgot to add "Cook and Tell" to my photograzed images :/

Weekend Cook and Tell: The Temporary Vegetarian

I jumped the gun and made some veg-head eats for friends that were staying with me from Denver. I had been scanning Pioneer Woman's backlogs and came up with some gems: Olive Bread and Roasted Ricotta Stuffed Romas.

Sneaking food into movies

I remember once sneaking in some chinese food in the little to-go containers, it was The Best! Hmmmm, I should do that again for shits'n'giggles!

Foreign foods that just taste... BETTER!

@Gator Pam & @Cakelove - I wholeheartedly agree with you guys, and for my carnitas where I boil the pork in coke and orange juice it's the best because it ends up caramelizing SO MUCH BETTER!

@curlycook - Where around Stuttgart!? That's precisely where I was!

Also I have to add, the milk in France is the best. It's even the namesake of a book!

Your unexpectedly best dish this summer

I know this sounds dumb but I have finally "discovered" tomato sandwiches. At least once a day for the last month (minus the week in Germany, but that's for another thread). I think the key to my new found love is a dusting of Ornate Onion Powder.

Compiling recipes for a family cookbook - advice?

As a food lover and a graphic designer in a print shop, please, for the love of everything good DO NOT USE WORD!

Publisher even, but -never- word.

Serious Heat: How Do You Gussy Up a Tostada?

I put sharp cheddar on two tostadas and pop them in the toaster oven to melt. The edges of the tortillas get all dark and crispy and when you layer them with your topping of choice it's like a perfect, giant nacho chip!

From A Hamburger Today

Cook the Book: 'Burger Bar'

Cheddar cheese, dipped in ketchup. Simple.

Every once in a while I will go with some sauteed mushrooms and some mayo in the ketchup, but that's a wild-hair kind of day, hahaa.

What's your favorite novelty/odd food item?

I can't remember the last time I bought a bag of potato chips but I am never too long without a can of Piknik Sticks! I think it's a variation on a theme I must have inherited, my mom has eaten French's Fried Onions out of the can as her "special treat" since before I can remember.

I need advice for creole appetizers...

The first thing that popped in to my head was cheddar and andouille sausage wontons! Dipped in some rémoulade... mmmmm

From Talk

Extra Spaghetti Noodles?

what about taking a pair of kitchen scissors to the bulk of it until they are fork-able and making a pasta salad. Garden tomatoes, cucumbers, green onions, dressing of choice...

From Serious Eats

Cook the Book: 'The Barcelona Cookbook'

On a warm night outside a cafe in Granada the night before I dropped out of the English language school I was going to there to spend the rest of my summer (and "school money") traveling all over Europe. Must have been something in those tapas!

Cook the Book: 'Bobby Flay's Burgers, Fries & Shakes'

We have a place stuck smack-dab in the middle of the woods, about a half hour from the town that is called the Sugar Shack. I always get their Swiss-Mushroom Sugar Burger which has, besides swiss cheese and mushrooms, grilled onions and green peppers. It's always burn-your-mouth smokin' hot off the grill but it's legen(wait for it)dary.

Serious Cocktails: Pining for Pimm's

I had my first one in Colonial Williamsburg and have been hooked ever sense. To me the cucumber seals it!

Alton Fans: How about some metal for breakfast?

I read in a history book on cereal once that they came up with "IRON FORTIFIED" and the like because of the shavings from the grinding machinery that ends up in the cereal is unavoidable. By duping people in to thinking that add it for their benefit they can just act like it's there on purpose.

Throwing a BBQ on the cheap

I agree with Judes' idea. Kebabs are the way to go. The cheapest bbq I ever threw was for about $30 and I fed 20 people until they were stuffed and had plenty to spare. Plus you can have them skewer their own and it helps fill in some of the gaps of what-to-do-with-loitering-company :)
