Do Gals Eat Less When Guys Are Around?

I actually think I eat more around other females. Being thin, I feel criticized by other women who wrongly assume that I constantly diet or worse. Other females are more likely to make comments like, "Have another slice. You can use the extra calories, and I can't." Guys, on the other hand, will happily take that last slice from me.

Dinner Tonight: Alice Waters's Carrot Soup

I'm with Nick on this one...I prefer non-blended soups. And Emmi24g, I'm not sure why you're doubting that it will be good, considering the above description: sweet, soothing, with good textures: sounds delicious to me.

For the laddies- Hottest Food Network Dude?

I'm totally with mochateri: I've got to go with Dave Lieberman. I thought he was adorable. Jamie Oliver is #2, and Aaron Sanchez at #3.

I call it "the Colt 45 of wine"

Santa Rita 120 Sauv. Blanc is my fall back wine! The closest liquor store sells it for $5, and it's totally drinkable. I just saw a big display for it at Whole Foods (where they charge $7), so maybe I'm not the only one who opts for this solid, cheap white.

young ladies drinking 'sweet wines'--ha!

Friends don't let friends drink white zin...and definitely not Boone's Farm. It's certainly a phase a lot of us go through, however.

'Top Chef,' Season 6: The Premiere

Within the first five minutes, my husband and I already knew who would go home, as usual. When the family photos come on screen for a contestant this early, it means they're out. While I thoroughly enjoy the show, I wish Bravo didn't make it so easy to tell who's going home. Just watch to see who gets screen time in the very beginning of the episode...they always either win the challenge or pack their knives and go.

Serious Eaters! Lend me your rice cooker recipes!

There's a recipe for red Mexican rice in a Bayless cookbook. Basically, you just add most of a bottle of salsa to your uncooked rice in the rice cooker, cutting the amount of water a bit. The result is amazing!

From A Hamburger Today

Hamburger America: Taylor's Maid-Rite in Marshalltown, Iowa

My mom made a mean Maid-Rite sandwich. I personally prefer them to burgers...good ones are not definitely not dry. Never needed cheese, either.

What do you do with Tomatillos?

Over a year ago, Mario Batali had a recipe here on Serious Eats for chicken cooked in a tomatillo sauce. It's an all-time fave at my house. I'd make batches and batches if I were you.

Cheap Beer and Wine in Bulk in Chicago (Any Wholesale Shops?)

Try Binny's Beverage Depot. There are a few locations around the city, and the website advertises an August wine sale: www.binnys.com.

Dinner Tonight: Chicken Fried Steak with Cream Gravy

As a child when my dad would order chicken fried steak, I really thought that somehow parts of a chicken were flattened enough to be wrapped around the steak and then fried. Sounds like a Paula Dean concoction, perhaps?

Any hidden-gem cookbooks?

I guess my love for the Boxcar Children cookbook would count as a hidden gem. It was my first cookbook. It's still my go-to for basics like french toast, but that's about it these days. Someday maybe there will be a kid in my family who also reads the Boxcar Children, and I'll be sure to pass it along as a gift.

Watch It with Us: 'The Next Food Network Star' Season 5 Finale

I'm also really disappointed...another network should snatch Jeffrey up. I'm thinking the Travel Channel, where he could actually show the ingredients in their traditional setting before cooking with them. His concept is much more interesting and original, and he's so much easier to watch.

Dinner Tonight: Leftover Chili Dogs

Has anyone actually READ the commentary? All week this DT guy has mentioned he's living on a couch in someone's house. Give him a break. Doesn't anyone need a quick left-over meal once in a while?

Best apples for apple butter???

When I made apple butter last fall, I was lucky enough to simply ask a large apple stand at the farmers' market for the best blend for apple butter. It was a combo of several kinds, all local and at peak freshness. If you have access, give that a try.

Where can I get a good Pupusa in the city?

Red Hook ballfields had the best when I lived in Brooklyn. The best.

A Tom Collins is basically lemonade, right? gin, simple syrup, fresh lemon juice, club soda. So refreshing!

Chi-Town Suggestions

Best Hot Dogs = Hot Dougs. Go early. Expect to wait. It's worth it.

Best Pizza = Great Lake. Thanks to GQ, it's almost impossible to get in, however.

While in town you should also try an Italian Beef (Al's maybe), and enjoy the plethora of tasty Mexican food this city has to offer.

Market Scene: Summer Bounty in Logan Square Market, Chicago

My favorite find at the Logan Square Market this weekend was asparagus for $2. That beats Stanley's prices for most weeks! I definitely buy much more at Stanley's than the farmers' markets, due to budget constraints. It is nice to shop the markets occasionally, though.

Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?

Egg in the whole. Topped with some salsa, it's my favorite breakfast.

What Is Superman Ice Cream?

I grew up eating Superman ice cream in south-central Indiana. I definitely thought it was just vanilla with food coloring, though. The three colors never had distinct flavor to me, although may my ice cream shop was just not as authentic.

Dinner Tonight: Tortilla Soup

I just had tortilla soup from Frontera Fresca, or whatever that Bayless place in Macy's is called. Fantastic. Now maybe I can make it at home.

Memphis recommendations?

Best thing I ate in Memphis: barbecue spaghetti from Neely's Interstate barbecue.

From Serious Eats: New York

McCafe: McDonald's New Fancier, Pricier Coffee

Every McD's I see in Chicago has had McCafe's for a while. I tried the mocha once, and only once. I found it to be way too sweet. I'm a big chocolate fan, but to me it tasted just sugary and not so chocolately. Not trading in my Starbucks.

Dinner Tonight: Pad See Ew

This is my absolute favorite dish from Thai restaurants. Looks pretty easy to make at home, too. Can't wait to try it!
