Delisi's Pizzeria & Bar: A Fully Restored Neighborhood Institution

If you look at the posts from "two pizzas," the overwhelming majority of them are bashing Chicago style pizza. He clearly brings value to the community. :)

Do You Put Ranch Dressing on Pizza?

Cassaendra's comment makes me nostalgic for the pre-Serious Eats days. A post on "Slice, America's Favorite Pizza Weblog" should never start with "I can't stand pizza to begin with..." :)

Slice vs. Vice: Stone-Coal WRONG

I'll admit that I clicked on the tag "truth hammer" hoping to see other examples of Adam meting out justice, and was sad to find that this is the only one.

Dear Slice: Una Pizza Napoletana Ain't All That

Going to a place you've never been before with a group is always a mistake. As for my girlfriend and me, we went to Una Pizza a few weeks ago and it was divine. Perfect blend of everything. Definitely didn't miss the toppings! Though I will say that Franny's in Brooklyn (thanks, Adam, for the recommendation!) gives Mr. Mangieri a run for his money.

Una Pizza Napoletana Reopens Tomorrow Night

@ pizcajj: I went to UPN on Saturday night for dinner, I paid $21 for a small pizza, and I did not feel cheated or ripped off in the least. I look at it like this. If I go to a casual chain restaurant, I pay that much by the time I'm done and I didn't get the quality of food I got at UPN. It was simply amazing food.

I can get perfectly good pizza delivered to my home where I live in New Jersey for around $12 for a large pie, from several different places. They don't follow Anthony Mangieri's strict adherence to old Italian recipes, but they are good in the great-pizzeria-up-the-street way that those who grew up in the NY-NJ area are used to.

I guess what I'm saying is that there is a place in the world of pizza for "gourmet" pizza as well as great slice joints. Just keep an open mind.

As far as expense goes, it doesn't seem like it's that insane compared to places like it. Franny's margherita pie is something like $16 for what I'm guessing is a similar portion. Expensive for pizza, but not expensive for a good meal.

Hungry Jack's Quad Stacker Sparks Outrage

I actually assumed that by "no salad" they meant "without lettuce and tomato"... but I'm not really up on my Aussie slang.

John's Pizzeria, a Familiar Taste

I don't care what anyone says, my girlfriend and I love John's. It's not fancy-pants pizza, it's just great. Same with Vinny Vincenz, that place is another of my NYC favorites.

A White Manna / White Mana Pilgrimage Revisited

I didn't love White Manna (Hackensack) the first time I went, but at the urging of a co-worker we headed there for lunch on Friday. I definitely liked it a lot better the second time around, due in part to the fact that this time I got doubles instead of singles. In my opinion, the doubles have the superior ratio of bun to meat. Also, I found the burger more enjoyable if I let it sit for a bit; the rest allowed the burger some time to solidify and not be a pile of mush like it comes off the grill (albeit a tasty pile of mush).

Between the Bars: Kinchley's Tavern and Star Tavern

Looks like I'm a little late to the dance, but I had to weigh in here. Star Tavern is... all right. The flavor is very good, and the atmosphere is awesome in that small-town-dive sort of way, but it's just too damn greasy; the cheese-to-crust ratio is way off. I enjoyed it, my girlfriend (who is more sensitive to grease than me) did not; but like it or not, it's definitely not the best in the area. It's just okay.

Shake Shack Branch Coming to Upper West Side

Maybe, but it's not like the burgers don't stand on their own; Shake Shack burgers are totally amazing. I for one applaud the expansion as long as they keep the quality level up.

White Manna in Hackensack to Appear on Food Network

Not too big on White Manna, to be honest. I have the same problem there as I do at White Castle; I like to feel the texture of meat when I bite into a burger. :)

Diners Drive-ins and Dives is a great show, though; I love the shows like that and Feasting on Asphalt that focus on local family-owned places as opposed to the the bigger restaurants. Also, Guy Fieri is a great addition to the Food Network; the network really lucked out that the audience voted for him over that Reggie guy.

'Off the Broiler' Visits A Mano in Ridgewood, New Jersey

My lady friend and I visited A Mano on Friday after reading this article... the pizza really was fantastic. Had the Regina Margherita with buffalo mozzarella and it was just delicious. Great crust, great cheese, etc. My only possible gripe was with the dispersion of basil; it seemed like my pie had very little and it was all clumped into one spot, whereas her basil was better distributed.

Tough Pizza Critics on 'The Office'

"And, the writers may have rightly sensed that nobody would believe that, say, Domino's or the Hut had better pizza than a local establishment. It's been my observation that no matter how bad a local place is, it's almost always better than a chain."

Actually, where I went to college in Towson, MD, the local places were on the whole far worse than the chains. I ordered from Papa John's and Pizza Hut far more often than from any local place.

Which City Has the Best Pizza?

New York is the best.
I've also had New Haven and Chicago.
New Haven: went to Frank Pepe's was amazed at how unimpressive the pizza was. Just really unremarkable and greasy.
Chicago: have only had deep dish. I'll go with Ed in his book where he says that Chicago pizza is tasty but it's not "pizza."

Union Square Goodburger Opens

Hope this isn't considered off-topic, but I braved the infamous Shake Shack line on Saturday. It was long, but it moved quickly enough and it was a nice day (albeit slightly cold) to sit around outside. And I was definitely impressed with the burger (a double shack burger) and fries. The burger had a nice salty crunch you don't find everywhere.

A Slice of Heaven: Chain Pizza

It's interesting, the point about chains keeping cost down. I live in New Jersey, and I called Papa John's the other night before calling my regular place (Villa Victoria in Montclair) to do a price comparison. (I was also, pizza gods please forgive me, considering ordering from Papa John's if the price was right... in my defense, I was at the end of my budget.) I discovered, however, that a large pie at Papa John's was $13, the same as my local place! Plus at my local place I can talk to someone who actually speaks English! Forget the chains!
