Finding Pulque, the Ancient Mexican Drink, in Williamsburg

I tried pulque a few years ago at La Palapa. I didn't really know what it was at the time or that it was hard to find. Now I'm wondering where they got it from. It didn't come from a can.

It's only a matter of time before homemade/handmade/artisanal pulque starts showing up at Brooklyn Flea and/or sold from a truck.

Snapshots from South Korea: Pizza Doughnut from Mister Donut

I'm kind of torn on savory donuts (I just can't type doughnuts) but they seem to thrive in other countries. It's the cheese combined with sweet that's strange, I think. I had a cheese donut at J.Co Donuts & Coffee in Singapore. It was likable but just didn't seem sufficiently donutty. They also have one called the Mona Pisa with cheese and chicken sausage.

Philippines Fast-Food Giant Jollibee Makes East Coast Debut on Valentine's Day

Forget White Castle, I'm seriously going to have to try Jollibee for fast food Valentine's Day. Hope they have that sweet spaghetti with the wieners in it.

Chong Qing Chicken and Pea Shoots at Grand Sichuan

I love the Chong Qing chicken. I recently was at a Sichuan restaurant in HK and accidentally ordered both Chong Qing chicken and Chong Qing pig intestines (the latter had a different name). It was a massive chile overload. I brought the leftovers back to NYC the next day and they were still good (and spicy).

Top 10 Improbable McDonald's Items from Around the World

I was just in Macau and noticed a fish stick breakfast. Looks like it's part of a "Taste of Japan" promotion. There was also a rendang burger in Singapore but that might've been Burger King now that I think about it.

Dear AHT: Great Burger at Zum Stammtisch in Queens

It's not that bad of a walk from the Fresh Pond Rd. M station. I've never tried their burger because that would mean less room for the smoked pork chops.

Young & Hungry: Pio Pio's Secret Green Sauce and Fried Hot Dogs

I also love Pio Pio's green sauce, though I got a little freaked out when I found out it contained mayonnaise. But then, I'm an irrational mayo-hater.

Does Your Grocery Store Have You Crying Tears of Joy?

I visited my first Wegmans last month (Woodbridge, NJ) and was most definitely impressed. But then, all it it took was the big spacious row of self-serve-and-weigh bulk food to wow me. You just don't see that in Brooklyn. But they lost points when I was unable to find plastic-wrapped polenta in a tube and corn tortillas in the entire store. Why no love for corn products?

I grew up with Fred Meyer and they will always be my favorite. No finer one stop shopping.

How Old Is Too Old To Trick-or-Treat?

High schoolers? Really? My mom made me stop when I was 11 because I'd hit 5'6 and kept getting "aren't you too old to be trick or treating?" I didn't feel too old but it was awkward. Halloween wasn't/isn't fair to tall kids.

The Latest in College Financial Aid: Food Stamps

Funny, I got food stamps in college (a million years ago in the early '90s) and I never really thought much about it. $112/month went pretty far 15 years ago in the NW. I bought all sorts of expensive-ish items that normally would've been beyond the budget of a 19-year-old with a part-time job.

Do Not Want: Dunkin' Donuts Egg White Flatbread Breakfast Sandwiches

I gave the turkey sausage one a try recently and what annoyed me the most (besides the cardboardy bread) was that when I got it home there wasn't even any cheese on it. Not that the extra dairy would've necessarily helped the sandwich much.

Snapshots from Asia: I’d Like a Michael Jackson, Please

Ha, I forgot about this nickname. A couple years ago I met up with a few food bloggers in Kuala Lumpur and they mentioned that this drink was called a Michael Jackson. I'd never heard of such a thing, but then, no one really drinks black grass jelly in the US.

Korean Grocers: Do You Still Have One in Your Neighborhood?

There are still two within two blocks of my apt. in Carroll Gardens (and strangely, no real grocery stores anywhere in the immediate area). I wish they carried more Asian products. One is just a regular bodega, the other has lots of natural/organic/vegetarian stuff. I patronize the latter for Greek yogurt, but that's about it.

Despite being a little fast-foodish, the softshell crab sandwich at the Circus Drive-In at the Jersey Shore isn't half bad. No homemade tartar sauce, though. But it's a circus-themed drive-in and that's half the fun.

A Hot Dog We Missed: The Colombian Hot Dog

San Antonio Bakery is pretty awesome; they have mostly snacky stuff like sandwiches, empanadas and tons of baked goods. And the owner is super friendly.

I've also heard about a Chilean place in Elmhurst, El Arrayan, but I haven't been yet.

It's very peculiar that I rarely post on Serious Eats, yet always chime in on Chilean food. I think I just like underdog cuisines.

Photo of the Day: Pastel de Choclo, Chilean Corn and Meat Pie

They do serve pastel de choclo at a semi-weird, kind of pricey theater district restaurant, Pomaire, which claims to be the only Chilean restaurant in NYC (which isn't quite true). But I can't say how authentic it is because I've never eaten the dish on its home turf.

Dinner Tonight: Healthy and Delicious Braised Greens Tacos

I want to say that it was tomatillo salsa, though it looks kind of thick. And really, I should remember since I doctored up the taco, myself but memory fails me (this was from Memorial Day weekend '07).

You have reminded me that I should crack open my copy of Mexican Everyday in the near future.

Dinner Tonight: Healthy and Delicious Braised Greens Tacos

I’d never encountered stewed vegetable tacos until a trip to Mexico City last year. There’s a stand in Condesa that some call El Guero, it says hola on the front awning, and they sell like 20 different varieties like cauliflower, squash, red pepper and nopales. Unfortunately, they’d run out of most fillings by the time I showed up in the afternoon but I was able to try one with chard/alcelgas and topped with queso fresco. They are kind of messy but a nice change of pace from the more typically meaty fillings. I don’t think I’ve seen them in NYC.

Healthy and Delicious Chicken Salad Sandwiches

Chicken salad is one of my most favorite sandwiches (I was just thinking about them because they were mentioned on Ugly Betty--I guess it's supposed to be the sandwich of choice for "ugly" people?) but it's the kind of thing I only make at home. I don't get too herby but I have been using yogurt and playing around with adding fruit. Chopped dried apricots and almonds can be good. And hot Spanish paprika gives that almost bacon-y flavor. This weekend I made chicken salad and added leftover shredded daikon and carrots from a banh mi experiment. It was good, too.
