Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'

The Joy of Cooking, of course. My mother gave it to me the first christmas after I actually started cooking in earnest. I think The New Best Recipe quickly followed.

Flame Gourmet Burgers in Berkeley, California

I ate here a couple of weeks after it opened and was, like kukkurovaca, unimpressed. The turkey was similar in texture and taste to turkey meatloaf, and the beef was just ok. The shoestring fries were far from spectacular. I love a good french fry and these weren't worth eating. I would go back if I was in the area and try one of their vegetarian options, but for an excellent Niman Ranch burger and shoestrings, I'd go a few extra blocks into Oakland at Wood Tavern.

Be sure to watch one of her earlier videos, on yogurt. It's one of my favorites.

Cook the Book: 'Baking Unplugged'

Martha Stewart's Crepe Cake. Not so much funny, especially at the time. I remember the so-called cream filling turning into a goopy mess. The end result was a crepe cake that sloshed and slid around. I had to dissassemble the entire cake (which was not yet frosted) and cut small rounds, fill, and stack from there. Never. Again.

The water tip--did he also suggest braised turkey? That I would like to try.

Chocolate cake with lemon curd. I haven't it had it in a long time, but it still sounds appealing.
