Sullivan Street Bakery: New York's Best Bakery Keeps Rising

This is my favorite bread of all time.
It is true peasant bread, I love the pane pugliese.
We are lucky enough in NJ to be able to buy it at Whole Foods and some other local specialty markets......but there's nothing like buying it fresh from the bakery in the city.....especially the pizza bianco, when it's fresh out of the oven.

Do You Have a Favorite Cheapish Olive Oil?

I have cut back on my expensive olive oil purchases this year, and have been buying Colavita extra virgin olive oil at the super market.

It happens to be excellent for everyday cooking and salad dressings.....I do miss my Frantoia from Sicily, though.

In Memory of The Silver Palate's Sheila Lukins

She was not a smoker Dave, she died of brain cancer.

The Silver Palate cookbook was my first cookbook and I learned to cook from that book in the 90's. The gourmet takeout store on Columbus Ave. on the upper west side was also a fun place to go back then.
Chicken Marbella is my go to dish for the holidays.
She will be missed.

Yes Dave, 66 is way too young.

My Pizza Oven: Mark Wilkie, Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn

Beautiful oven!
I was lucky enough to sample the pizza at Paulie Gee's from his outdoor oven and there was nothing better!

Time Consuming Recipes

Anything from Suzanne Goin's Sunday Suppers at Lucques is a whole day ordeal.
I guess that's why they call it "Sunday Suppers" because you have to cook all day on a Sunday!

The results are always fantastic and worth the effort.

Video: "Which Way to Paulie Gee's?"

I am one of the lucky ducks who have been to a Paulie Pizza Tasting, and I can say, it's all it's cracked up to be, and more.

The best pizza we have ever eaten!

Lunch and Dinner at Locanda Verde: Just Like Breakfast, Worth a Trip

We went for dinner as a walk in on Wed. night, and really enjoyed the place.
Casual, friendly service, happening bar, and great food.
I loved A Voce, Carmellini's first restaurant. This is more like a trattoria, the crostini w/ fava bean puree was the bomb and the pasta dishes were also excellent.
Thanks for the recommendation!

Cookout Etiquette

I think it's the age of the host....college age people don't have much dough, so they ask people to bring the main dish, liquor and desserts.
What's left?

Not in my world.
You are invited to my party, just bring yourself.
Food, booze and entertainment provided by yours truly.

How tacky to be asked to bring your own seats?
just bring your ass!

'The Most Revolting Dish Ever Devised'? Or Have You Seen Worse?

This all sounds like "Goop Melange" from the Odd Couple.....Oscar's favorite dish!

Fill salad bowl w/ sardines and pickles
Top w/ whipped cream
Garnish w/ crushed potato chips...........

Athletes supposedly trained on this!

Dear Food Network, Please Stop

I am also a "used to have it on all day" person, but since have turned it off due to the Neely's, Paula Deen and Sandra Lee. UGH.
However, I am entertained by the show The Next Foodnetwork Star, it's the only thing I can stand to watch on that channel now, even Ina's shows are not that exciting.
Too much of a good thing.

Congratulations Are in Order

Paulie,
Your photos on flickr had me drooling.
Chris looks like a mad scientist, and I know he really is one!
I couldn't do the 4 hr wait when we visited, so we turned back.
Next time I will tough it out.

No Love for New Jersey Pizza, Richman?

Jersey pizza is 2nd to Brooklyn.
I love Resevoir Tavern in Parsippany, and DeLorenzos in Chambersburg (Trenton), so many great pizzerias down at the shore.
Hard to believe we were snubbed. So what else is new?

F-Words of Wisdom from Pizzaiolo Chris Bianco

Paulie,
We were at Bianco's last spring in Phoenix, not knowing about the wait......4 hours.
I love pizza and I f....ng love Chris', but nothing is worth waiting that long......except maybe pizza from an outdoor pizza oven in Warren, NJ!!!

Long Flights - BYOF?

I always bring 2 peanut butter and fig preserves on whole grain bread.
They stay fresh in the foil for hours and can't spoil, and they are a good snack in case you are stuck on the tarmac for hours waiting to take off.
I also pack protein bars, lots of them. Don't want to starve!

Help me remember this breakfast cereal

This post is bringing back so many cereal memories......Sugar Pops with the cowboy on the box were my favorite along with Alphabits....and someone mentioned Quisp! yum.
Does anyone remember the cereal FREAKIES? they gave away little rubber toy freaky monsters inside.

Seriously Italian: In Praise of Pecorino

Gina,
I love Pecorino Romano, I am glad you told me about the 2 different types.

I made your zucchini olive oil cake today and posted it on my blog.
It was excellent! Thanks!

An Evening with Paulie Gee, Pizza Madman

Paulie,
How come we don't know eachother?
I live in Summit and am a pizza freak.........I love DeLorenzo's in Trenton, Arturo's in the W. Village (coal oven) and grew up on Reservoir Tavern pizza in Parsippany. (many other places that I love/hate).
We make excellent pizzas at home....spinach, pancetta and onion.

How do I get an invite to Warren to that pizza tasting?
My blog is Stacey Snacks.
Thanks!

Served: The Ballsy Waitress

The author must work at Spitzer's on the lower east side.
We recently ate there at 6 pm, and the server asked us for I.D.
We are 45 and look 50, with greyish hair, there is no way she thought we were not of age. It was just sort of awkward.

'F*** Yeah, Cilantro'

Cilantro is a love/hate thing.
I LOVE IT. I sometimes pick a leaf in the supermarket just to have that smell on my hands.......ok, I know that sounded weird!
