When in Rome: Dar Poeta

We ate at Dar Poeta earlier this summer on our last night in Rome. It was hands down the best pizza, incredible salad and the best damn dessert I have had in a long time - Ricotta and Nutella calzone. I was almost in tears during dinner and my husband still talks about it.

I was stopped dead in my tracks when I was that my dear Dar Poeta was on SeriousEats!

It is worth the wait, worth the extra time to find it and not a tourist trap.

Hamburger America: Dick's Drive-In in Seattle, Washington

This post just about brought tears to me eyes! I went to college in Seattle and I do believe that we went to Dick's on Broadway during new student orientation! There is nothing like Dick's nor should another burger joint ever be put into the same category. Dick's ='s the best gut-bomb ever.

What kind of Candy or Cookies do you make for Christmas

I just pulled off a Christmas miracle this year! Didn't think the baking was going to make the to-do list this year, but it DID!

Here's the list:
Peanut Butter kisses
3 layer Peppermint Bark
Dill crackers
Rocky Road fudge
Lemon Poppy Seed Bread
Banana Bread with cinnamon/suger topping
Chocolate covered pretzels

Like I said, a Christmas Miracle ... off to make the tamales!

Snapshots from the UK: Ribena, and the Guinness and Black

One look at the Ribena bottle and I instantly flashed back to Snake Bites* in Edinburgh! Too many nights, too many Snake Bites ... just makes my head hurt thinking about them!

*Ribena mixed with a lager beer = HANGOVER

Cook the Book: 'Giada's Kitchen'

Since it has still been so ridiculously hot here, we are eating bruschetta pasta. A little whole wheat pasta, fresh tomato, basil, garlic and olive oil. So simple and SO delicious. My husband calls it love on a plate!

My favorite cold cereal is _____

GrapeNuts Trail Mix Crunch has definitely made its way onto my "fav" list. With a little really cold nonfat milk or yogurt if I'm feeling it, this makes a great breakfast lunch or even dinner.

Chocolate-Covered Bacon for Breakfast

I grew up going to Marini's and have never had a single piece of "candy" I didn't like from them. I'm sure this chocolate covered bacon wouldn't change my mind.

Now we can have bacon for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert ... a perfect day in my book.

Basil Custard Kicks off July at the Shake Shack

I had the Shake Shack Basil Custard last week and it was the perfect end to a great day in Manhattan. My friends thought I was crazy when I ordered, but they didn't think I was so crazy when they tried it!

Cook the Book: Serves One

When my husband is gone I ALWAYS make my mom's "brown spaghetti" and a Quick Linguini and Clams! They warm my heart and fill my belly with a touch of home.

Fried Okra -- Give it some serious love!

This story is so funny and ironic! I just bought fresh okra this week (in Northern San Diego) and introduced three people to it this weekend! Of course I made a "fried" version with cornmeal and it was gone before everything else. I must go buy more before it disappears for the year!

My sister who lives in North Carolina tends to pay me in fresh Georgia okra for watching her kids!

Do you make your own granola?

I have started making my own granola this year. I love being able to control the ingredients and fat content. Buying the items (wheat germ, bran, pecans, cranberries, raisins, etc) in bins or bulk has really saved in terms of cost.

I asked a few friends for their recipes and adapted all of them to make my own.
