What to feed to a big baby.

if the guy is eating protein bars, he obviously cares about his health. he also cares about his health if he wants you to cook for him instead of just getting takeout (because obviously he can afford that). i think the ideas for mac n cheese and lasagna, etc. are great, but i would talk to him aobut his caloric intake and ask what he expects from you in that sense. maybe then you can stick with staples but make them a little healthier (i.e. turkey meatloaf, high-protein spaghetti with turkey meatballs, grilled chicken sandwiches, etc.)

i'm definitely the girl who orders a margarita (rocks, salt) with her brunch. and i never hear the end of it.

Best Hangover Food?

it all depends on my level of sickness! :)

1. egg and cheese on a bagel with tons of ketchup (if i'm motivated to go out and get it)
2. oatmeal or ramen noodles (if i can't bear to leave the house - i keep a stash in the pantry!)
3. thai (crab rangoon (for the grease) and chicken w broccoli and brown rice (for protein and carbs))
4. a pina colada or margarita (it's true - the hair of the dog really works!)

Taking liberties with dish names

i also just googled the kwanzaa cake...holy toledo! no offense to toledo. the most shocking part is the number of people who actually tried to make it (see the reviews).

i agree that when i hear "tomato carpaccio", i think of very thinly sliced tomato. i think it's okay in that sense.

Help - How to make desserts without an oven?

No bake peanut butter squares! My friends rave over them and they're always requested. So easy to do with kids, too!

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine
2 cups powdered sugar
1-1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1 cup peanut butter
1-1/2 pkg. (12 squares) (i use Baker's) semi-sweet chocolate

Line a 9x9-inch baking pan with foil, with ends of foil extending over sides of pan. Set aside.

Melt butter. Add sugar, graham cracker crumbs and peanut butter; mix well. Spread into prepared pan.

Microwave chocolate in double-boiler (or microwaveable bowl on high for1-1/2 to 2 min.) until melted, stirring consistently. Cool slightly; pour over peanut butter mixture in pan.

Refrigerate 1 hour or until set (I go into the fridge every 15 minutes or so to cut through the chocolate layer - otherwise the squares will crack/break and not look pretty - this is really necessary).

kraftfoods.com has some great ideas for no-bake desserts.

Irrational (or rational) food prejudices you have had or have

i feel this way about boxed mashed potato mixes, (i.e. "potato buds"), spray butter, canned whipped cream, and ketchup that is not heinz. according to my mother, these items are NEVER allowed in her kitchen.

Grossest thing found in restaurant food

i have two:
1: chain restaurant well-known for it's desserts....bit into a metal SCREW in my teriyaki chicken and rice. gave it to waiter, we got free desserts (in retrospect, should have demanded full bill).
2: mom and pop restaurant in connecticut - my friend broke his tooth on a piece of broken PLATE stuck in his reuben. we paid for nothing.

Foods We Loved as Kids, Maybe Not as Adults

PEEPS. blech. i used to fire them down by the trayful. my mother STILL insists on sending me, oh, ten, twelve boxes every year, for every major holiday, no matter how many times i tell her that i hate them. i can't GIVE them away!

i do still love newtons. and hot pockets. and kraft mac-n-cheese.

Boston Eats, nice but not crazy

Scoozi (more casual, pizza and salad) and Tapeo (tapas) are both right on Newbury Street. The Melting Pot (a fondue restaurant) just opened at 76 Arlington Street - some friends went to the opening and said it was great. Vox is on Boylston Street - I hear good things but have never eaten there. Sonsie is always spot-on.
