Snapshots from South Korea: Pon de Ring Doughnuts from Mister Donut

MIS-DO! I miss it so much. The best part about Mister Donut, at least in Japan, is the Mis-Do point card. You can rack up points (donut points!) to win things like a lamp in the shape of a big donut. True story. My friend Carol had one. The second best thing about Mister Donut is that the donuts don't sit like fried, leaden rings in your stomach. Important when your normal donut-eating time is midnight, post bar-hopping.

I bought some green plums from the Hollywood Farmers' Market recently and am in the process of turning them into umeshu (Japanese plum wine). Yum!

The Working Lunch at Lemon Moon in Los Angeles

Damon, have you tried the burger at The Cabbage Patch in Beverly Hills? It's also very much a weekday lunch spot, but the burger I had was perfectly cooked and seasoned well. I wasn't crazy about the abundance of arugula, but it was definitely the tastiest burger I've had in awhile. (And the chef/owner told me it's his favorite thing on the menu.)

Adam, I think your fresh, old-Japanese-lady-made mochi counts! I lived in Japan for two years and ate everything that crossed my path, and I still don't recognize half the dishes on this list. Makes me wish I was back in Japan...

"Dengaku" is the name used when something is slathered in miso sauce and grilled. I've had tofu dengaku and nasu (eggplant) dengaku, but never konnyaku. Yum, I'm totally craving nasu dengaku right now.

Fresh & Easy? Not So Simple

Thanks, this was a balanced, interesting look at F & E. I've only been into the store once (the Eagle Rock location) and never felt the urge to return because I think in general the prices at Trader Joe's are either the same or cheaper, so there's no need to add another store to my rotation. It would definitely be worth it if I ate a lot of pre-made meals and was looking for a healthy alternative to regular supermarket yuck, though.

I didn't like the packaging of the produce -- and I don't like it at TJ's either -- because it's often difficult to find a package without that one spot of mushy/bruised grossness.

That being said, it's great that they are adding stores to areas that need healthy food choices. I went to USC and I remember the Ralph's near school was just completely grim.
