Universal Breakfast Program: Schools jumpstarting kids' day.

@pavlov - not all parents have the resources to give their kids money to buy breakfast. i worked in schools where over 50% up to 100% of the kids qualified for free or reduced meals. yes, some of these parents could do a better job parenting (although we don't know all of the things that prevented that), but a lot of them were doing their damnedest to raise their kids right and were still struggling - in which case having a free breakfast for the kids isn't some governmental overreaching but is just what we as humans should be obligated to provide for our children (it takes a village, and all of that).

also, having worked with five year olds - getting them to remember to bring the money to school, and not lose it, and pay attention to what's going on - some of them can do it, some of them can't yet. should those kids lose out on breakfast because they are still learning?

@tusti and pavlov - hate the parents who, for whatever reason, can't or won't take care of their kids, if you absolutely must. but does that mean their kids should be punished? what possible argument could you have against a school making sure that those five year olds who don't have the resources at home are being fed at school? is that really a worse expenditure of taxpayer dollars than the anything else in the government's budget?

Cold Pizza

in new york at least when you buy pizza by the slice you can just tell the guy to not put it in the oven and warm it up - i've never done that, but it's not like refrigerator cold, but it's not hot.

@marvindog - sauteeing pizza in olive oil? why not just bake it or even microwave it?

From Talk

The Sometimes Fabulous food of the young and Broke

endless bowls of cereal, boxes of mac'n'cheese, and apples (with peanut butter if i had it). i can just picture how empty and sad my fridge/pantry used to look back then.

From Talk

favorite stoned snack

breakfast burritos - there was one place in particular in college that delivered until 3 in the morning, and it came with mushrooms and potatoes (as well as eggs and cheese, of course) and it was massive and delicious and the tomatillo salsa was the best...never actually had it for breakfast, of course, only ever in the wee hours...but i'm getting so hungry for it now!

Who cares what famous people eat?

i could see people giving such an answer because it's what they think is expected of them - regardless of how you define success, if someone else asks you how you know you've done something, it's easy to get in the habit of giving a response that you think other people will be able to understand/appreciate...so maybe some of these chefs deserve the benefit of the doubt?

and i agree with @engmcmuffin - if someone could eat anywhere (and famous people are more likely to have those options than the non-famous) and they decide to eat your food, then, while not dispositive, makes it more probable that you're cooking something tasty.

From Talk

You truly do get what you pay for

i will splurge when it matters - the cheese i shred over my fried eggs in the morning doesn't have to be top-notch, but the cheese i serve on a cheese board for company had better be able to stand alone. i don't eat chocolate often, but when i do, it's not going to be hershey's. and unless if i'm going to a rager, if i'm buying beer it's not going to be bud light (though it also probably won't be chimay). i guess it's more of walking the line - i don't need to (and can't afford to be) extravagant, but i'm not going to eat cardboard.

From Talk

Chili Garlic Sauce

i bet it would be good on eggs (like scrambled or in an omelet - i've been putting cholula on mine recently and that's a garlicky/spicy sauce). i would use some in stir fries, and maybe mix a spoonful into broths/noodle bowls.

From Talk

Condiment Envy - How many condiments are in your fridge?

@OP - more important than asking how many condiments if they're cooking for you is asking how many they have before you agree to cook at their place. I made dinner at my friend's house a few weeks ago and he didn't have olive oil, and his entire range of condiments included: soy sauce, multiple asian chili oils, and rice vinegar. and he was seriously lacking in pots and pans. no, he never ever cooks except for the occasional bowl of ramen late at night.

then again, i have another friend with a wide range of every kind of grain, wrapper, condiment, and good quality cookware, and she never ever cooks, and only in a limited range when she does. so it really goes either way on how predictive someone's pantry is.

off the top of my head, i think we have like 15 condiments in the fridge: soy sauce, sesame oil, oyster sauce, sriracha, three kinds of honey, two kinds of mustard, tabasco, cholula hot sauce, worcestershire, two kinds of horseradish, two kinds of jam...i'm sure i'm forgetting things, but those are the most used i guess.

dinner for 12 ideas

i like the idea of a cheese board, with some fresh and dried fruits, nuts, olives, good bread and a variety of cheeses; maybe some pate if people would like that, and you could buy some premade tapenade or other spreads (or make one really quickly in a food processor). hummus with some pita chips and crudite is good as well, or tortilla chips with guacamole and salsa (mango salsa is a good one). chop up a bunch of tomatoes, toss in some mozzarella and fresh basil, mix with olive oil, balsamic vinegar and salt and pepper (alternatively, add a few spoonfuls of pesto) and toast some bread in the oven and you've got bruschetta that everyone will devour and that takes no time to make. add a pasta salad or a quinoa salad that can be quickly assembled with a few ingredients, and it's filling enough for dinner and comes together pretty quickly.

Tips for saving money at farmers markets?

i agree with the other posters - if you want to save money at the farmer's market, then shop later in the day when many offer deals (although the produce has been sitting in the sun all day, so maybe not in its best shape), look around to see who has lower prices, and maybe if you buy in bulk. asking the farmer to lower their prices is a way of saying that their produce isn't worth what they are asking for it - unless if it's the type of place where negotiation is the norm, then it's just offensive to the guy whose blood and sweat went into growing the food.

Ahi Tuna Prep

my husband's friend came up on some thick steaks a few years back and was kind enough to give us some. we just seared it quickly in a little olive oil with some salt and pepper...it was amazing. the fish itself is so good, i feel like it's best to keep it simple so that the flavors really come through.

From Talk

Marsala Wine

the wine will definitely keep that long. giada has a mushroom ragu recipe on the food network site that calls for marsala and it's amazing and super simple to throw together.

Grilling Party and I don't know what to make!!! HELP!

corn on the cob! skewer some shrimp and throw them on the grill (wrap them in bacon if you're really going for glorious).

vegetables are a cheap way to add more items to the menu - mushrooms (button/portobello), bell peppers, onions are pretty standard (keep your skewers separated, and the pieces fairly uniform - i.e., all the peppers on one skewer, all the onions on another - that way, you can make sure the thicker vegetables are cooked all the way through without scorching the smaller ones. you can mix them up again after they're done cooking).

grilled fruit is great too - i like pineapples, or peaches. or a big platter of watermelon slices on the side. or make some potato salad/macaroni salad/cole slaw to serve along with the main dishes.

looking at this list, i guess barbecues are like holidays for me - i need to have all the classic standbys.

SERIOUS help: convincing someone to change their eating habits

@deeberry, good luck with your dad - i know mine has awful eating habits too (his idea of the atkins diet was getting a hot dog and fries for lunch, and just not eating the hot dog bun). this thread made me think about a news article i read awhile back about the oldest man living in new york - he ate straight up pork fat every day for breakfast and drank two jugs of boone's farm (or some similarly atrocious booze, i forget exactly which) every week...and i think he was a smoker too...and he was like a hundred years old with no health problems whatsoever. my husband always points to him as an example whenever i try to get him to eat healthier X-(

Small Wedding Picnic

a quiche or frittata might be nice, and easily transportable. cold roast chicken has gone over well at picnics. i like to have an assortment of side salads and finger foods and then people can just nibble and it's easy to throw together but feels fancy. and using fancy ingredients and laying it out pretty takes everything a step up.

From Talk

Better Place To Buy Bok Choy

i forget the name of the farm, but they're at the farmer's market in union square and they sell like kimchi and stuff in addition to vegetables, and they always have two for five dollars later in the day, and their stuff is pretty good.

From Talk

Vegetarian/non-dairy appetizers

@nyceater, do you want vegetarian and non-dairy, or either or?

my stand-bys are stuffed mushrooms and bruschetta - i cut up tomatoes, add fresh herbs, and either oil and balsamic vinaigrette or pesto, and mozzarella, (but you could leave out the mozz) and then top toast with it. olive tapenade on toast is good too, or caponata. i also like to put out different nuts (some spicy, some sweet) and olives for snacks.

frittata could be cut up and made into an appetizer, and then people can just eat it with their hands.

or you can go for an asian theme - spring rolls, green papaya salad, dumplings (steamed or fried), etc.

From Talk

signature drink for a bbq?

sweet tea vodka arnold palmers (tastes like candy - either use sweet-tea flavored vodka and lemonade, or sweet tea + vodka + lemonade). agua fresca with booze added. one time DH made this mango slushee thing with frozen mango puree and fresh mint and i think vodka in it (but probably other types of booze, like rum or tequila, would work too) and it was delicious and refreshing.

Free Food

last year, i had the best supervisor at my internship. my first day, someone in the office had gotten an eggplant parmesan sandwich and wasn't able to finish it, so they sent around an email asking if anyone wanted it. when my supervisor got it, she asked me if i was interested and if i'd eaten. i said i hadn't, but i was fine, but my supervisor got very worried that i would be hungry (like i said, she was the best), so a few minutes later she disappeared and came back with this huge delicious sandwich and it was awesome. the fact that everyone there understood how important food was should have clued me in instantly that it would be a great fit for me.

i don't know how interesting the sandwich was (totally tasty), but it made for a great first day of work.

Freezing Advice: Fish/Meat

@dmcavanagh, i would have the question too, because i never use my freezer...there's just two of us that i'm feeding here so we tend to eat everything up and not freeze much. and i know plenty of serious eaters who are not serious cookers.

From Talk

Plane Snacks

i agree with @moeats - you can't bring liquids through security (you can bring them on board if you buy them in the gift shops that are inside the airport), so fresh, juicy fruits are a good idea (just pack in sturdy container so they don't get squishy). i also like to bring trail mix and granola bars, they are easy to eat and won't bother anyone sitting around me.
