Need suggestions for food for mission trip

Alton Brown has a great recipe for energy bars that are very nutritious and tasty, and would keep well under those circumstances. They consist of a whole wheat flour, wheat germ, soy protein powder, oats, lots of different dried fruits, and nuts. You could use nuts that are safe or just leave them out as you like.

Cooking hazards and other unpleasant side effects.

I've clogged up the garbage disposal with vegetable peelings more than once, and on another occasion had to fish tiny pieces of broken glass out of it. Not fun. So now, I save my vegetable peelings for stock instead. Problem solved.

@huneybumper--you poor thing! I'm holding my sides and giggling picturing you in an apron and half-melted wig, like a scene out of a bad horror movie. LOL!

What's Your Favorite Ice Cream Flavor

I think vanilla is underrated. I'll take a nice, rich french vanilla over other ice cream flavors a lot of times.

I also love Thrifty's strawberry cheesecake, and our local dairy's fresh peach in the summertime.

Not big on all the custom mix-ins at Coldstone, though. Also, I sampled their "Chocolate Cake Batter" last time we went there, and it tasted....just like chocolate cake batter. And not in a good way. In a raw, goopy way. *shudder*

Tomato Sauce outta can? Gross!

Trader Joes' jarred marinara sauce isn't bad--it's actually a little underseasoned to my taste, so I can do what I want with it if I need tomato sauce in a hurry.

What is your opinion on Pampered Chef products?

I have the chopper and love it, especially for chopping nuts. They don't go flying all over the place that way. I also love the mini muffin pan. It's thicker than other ones I've seen.

One of my very good friends used to sell PC and thereby acquired all the stoneware and cookware just about free, and it was all good stuff--the knives too.

A lot of the other stuff, though, is silly unitasker-type items, like the apple peeler/corer that takes up half the kitchen counter, the avocado knife (seriously?), egg separators, garlic press (sorry, @moibec, it takes me longer to clean one of those things than it does to mince garlic with a knife), etc.

Homemade energy/meal replacement bars--WAY! Or breakfast cookies. Mmm-mmm good.

Store-bought energy/meal replacement bars--*gag* Clif bars taste like tree bark, and most others I've tried taste like chalk, and have a list of ingredients which I'm pretty sure aren't food.

@ogirl--Seventh-Day Adventist Christians do not eat pork for the same reasons Jews do not eat pork--because it is an unclean meat. It is classified as unclean because of pigs' eating habits. In fact, many SDAs are vegetarians altogether if not vegan. We subscribe to the "our body is a temple" principle and stick to a diet where everything is taken in moderation--in other words, a sensible, healthy one. I'm not vegetarian but my diet is much more healthful than a lot of the vegetarians I know whose diet consists of cheese and pasta. LOL

That said, out of curiosity, I have tried pork in various forms and discovered I wasn't missing out on anything.

Ever try the recipes on the sides of packages?

I use the brownie recipe on the Ghirardelli's cocoa can. It is the bomb. I remember making them at 11 P.M. when I was pregnant. LOL

@andshewas--I started refrigerating my cookie dough overnight too. Such lovely results! I use Ghirardelli's semi-sweet chips, though (the recipe on the bag is almost identical to the Nestle's recipe, as are just about all chocolate chip cookie recipes).
