'Waiter Rant': The Giveaway

It was our anniversary and my wife was very pregnant with our first child. Very pregnant. We knew this would was our last chance to go out for a while. We were able to wrangle a reservation at Gramercy Tavern.

We were placing our order and my wife asked for the salmon appetizer. The waitress looked at my wife and warned us that the salmon was raw. As we discussed what to change to, the waitress asked us to hold on and stepped away. A few minutes later she came back, told us she talked someone in the kitchen and they could adjust it and cook the salmon just enough so it would be safe to eat.

When it came out, she also plated a smaller version so I could sample it "as it was originally intended".

Not a big thing. It's the small things that make a night memorable.

Opening Soon: Brick Oven Pizzeria in Chinatown

This is a bugaboo of mine. Fine it's a brick oven. But is it gas fired, coal or wood? Gas doesn't really get hot enough & I always thought it was the fuel that really mattered.

What to Eat on a First Date

Had my first date with my (now) wife at the Corner Bistro. She dug in to the burger with gusto. Points for that.

We later went back and saw a woman on an obvious first date eating her burger with a knife and fork. My wife asked what would have happened if she'd eaten it like that. I told her flat out there wouldn't have been a second date.

For some reason I seem to recall that you can't get shakes on the B-Line. Anyone out there know?

Cook the Book: 'Screen Doors and Sweet Tea'

What I refer to as "cocktails with the kids" - cherry lime rickies. the tartness of the limes mixes perfectly with the sweetness of the cherry syrup (though I admit sometimes I'll use grenadine). My kids love helping me mix these up.

A Burger with a Side of History at Old Town Bar

My favorite story about the Old Town is from the 50s.

A few of the Giants were there and Kyle Rote and Frank Gifford excused themselves. The waiter came by to take an order and was met with the reply, "I'll have what the backs in the boys are having"

What Are You Doing With Your Pee?

My favorite use for urine is to make phosphorus - the cold fire:

And yes, I know this has nothing to do with food either.

Real Women Eat Steak; Why Can't I?

I took my wife on our first date to the Corner Bistro. You want to talk about a trial by fire. She dug right in.

We go back regularly and laughed one time when we saw a woman on her first date attempt to use a knife and fork on a Bistro burger. My wife pointed at it and my immediate response was, "There probably wouldn't have been a second date if you did that."

It was, however, the last time I saw her drink a beer.

Okay, so what the heck is a "phosphate"? (Anyone who read "Our Town" hit that one, so that means anyone who went to Junior high school)>

Serious 'Cue: The Only Guide to the BABBP You Will Need

We actually walked through after having brunch at Blue Smoke for my son's birthday. Too full to eat except I had to get a sandwich at Mitchell's when I saw no line at his stand at 1:15 (I was shocked). Too bad his place in NC is closed. I've been craving this sandwich for a year. Did not disappoint.

Got to talk to him for a few minutes. Nice guy.

Pass the Sushi, Dad

My son has the NY version of this limited list. Chicken nuggets, mac and cheese, sushi (Cali rolls only), pizza, Dumplings (especially soup dumplings) & Pate. I don't know how we slipped pate in there but he is discerning enough that when I tried to pass off chopped liver when he was around five, he spit it out.

We recently were able to get him to try fried calamari (must be the breading) which he likes, as long as it's not the tentacles.

The Perfect Grilled Cheese Sandwich

I'm actually a big fan of Alton Brown's method of pressing the sandwich between two heated cast iron skillets. My kids don't go fr the mustard he suggests and they are usually quite happy with two slices of whole wheat bread.

Win your Dream Thansgiving Pies Contest

In the future, you may want to Google your clues before you post the contest. Two seconds after I read it, I plugged the quotes into Google and had the answers. Unfortunately, I read this an hour after it posted so I was too late.

Sorry to be a party pooper but contests like these are too easy in the age of the internet.

Congrats to the winners however, the pies are great.
