Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'

My now-husband bought me the New York Cookbook when I started college, which turned me on to so many of my favorites today!

Seriously Asian: All About Dumplings

What a great article! Although my mother has tried to teach me how to make her dumplings numerous times, I can't seem to do it right without her supervision. So, I cheat and buy frozen dumplings for a quick fix. My question is, can I just steam the frozen dumplings directly? I could just experiment, but I'd rather hear about what others have done!

Of course, I should also note that one can drive for at least a couple hours in western South Dakota without seeing any public restrooms. ("We're coming up to Phillip! If you need to go, go now, or you're holding it until the Black Hills!) Ok, I might be exaggerating a teensy bit, but it was definitely like that when I was a kid.

What Was Your Favorite School Cafeteria Food?

I have fond memories of octogon-shaped "fiestado" pizza and chili with Fritos and cheese, but the hands-down item I still crave is the frosted cinnamon rolls. An entire generation of kids from my hometown remembers these flaky, gooey, buttery frosted cinnamon rolls that were handmade by a single lunch lady for the entire school system (I lived in a really small town). She passed away about ten years ago, and the town is poorer for it.

Are You a Menu Whisperer?

I wasn't thinking about the economics either -- just the indulgence of ordering something extra or unexpected to share. In my case, it's the little things like sneaking in a side of bacon to share with my friend who loves it, but never gets it because she likes eggs benedict better (which doesn't usually have a side of bacon). Or appetizers for the table, or an extra dessert to share with my friend if I know she's on a budget -- stuff like that. I adore indulging my cravings by ordering two appetizers or desserts instead of an entree -- things like that -- unusual ordering habits as special treats and surprises.

Are You a Menu Whisperer?

I'm not a whisperer, but I'm still pretty ridiculous about my orders. I order everything that sounds good to me (which means extra appetizers and desserts for the table, and sometimes an extra entree). My friends sometimes looks shocked and embarrassed, but have gotten used to it -- after all, they're expected to share the dish with me (but not the check, of course).

Seriously Asian: Stir-Frying Vegetables

I remember spending afternoons with my aunts picking and cleaning greens for stir fry. Delicious! My mother was always mortified because family friends would ask me what I liked to eat (I was about 7 years old) and I always said stir fried bean sprouts or hollow stemmed greens (I don't know the name of this -- kong shing tsai?). Her friends would sigh because those two things took so much time to prepare. This series is really helping me recreate food I'd forgotten I loved.

Best food for a stomach ache?

Ginger tea (grate some ginger into hot water, add lemon and honey), applesauce, and toast. For really bad hangover, pho or hot sour soup used to work wonders for me (along with lots and lots of water, if you can keep it down).

Cooking for someone on medical marijuana?

@ chisai, I feel terrible hearing about your friend in need. I haven't done this in a while, but I used to take the chance and prebake THC-laced goodies and mail them to an ailing friend (at a PO Box without a return address) frequently without any trouble. It's not something I do now, so I don't know all the legal ramifications, but it worked a couple years ago.

Sneaking food into movies

I used to work at a movie theater when I was in college and saw all sorts of ridiculous things being smuggled into the theater. I personally didn't care as long as people were discreet, cleaned up after themselves, and didn't bother other moviegoers. The only time I got really annoyed was when a woman who came to the movies frequently actually had the cojones to have Chinese delivered to the theater on a slow afternoon. Amazingly, I actually went in to the theater and told the woman her food had arrived -- mostly because I didn't want the delivery guy to get stiffed.

As for me? I usually take a big bottle of water and maybe candy, but I've smuggled in a giant salad, burritos, and beef jerky.

Cook the Book: 'Big Bob Gibson's BBQ Book'

My first BBQ experience was my best -- a place called Nap's. I'm sure it really wasn't that great, but it was the first time I'd had it. I've been coveting BBQ from Podnah's in Portland these days.

How do season you steak?

Chicago Steak Seasoning from Penzeys, or S&P, or a South Dakotan rub of salt, pepper, Old Bay, greek seasoning, and seasoned salt.

Mooncakes

Mooncakes are an acquired taste. I personally love them, but I'm Chinese and grew up in a traditional home. My husband is American and hates them. I'd go with the lotus seed or red bean ones. I am not a fan of the salted egg yolk or nut ones. I usually buy the little ones for more variety, and the "trendy" ones in pineapple, green tea, etc., are really good. The giant ones (I'm assuming that's what the $35 one is) are often used for engagement announcements and stuff.

Cook the Book: 'What We Eat When We Eat Alone'

Graham crackers with frosting or cream cheese, saltines with cream cheese, ramen with a poached egg, and ice cream out of the pint.

When Is It Socially Acceptable to Share Food?

I'm pretty ambivalent about the whole thing. I don't care if someone wants to swap tastes or eat family style, or if I stick with what I ordered. But this is my biggest pet peeve: when it's a tasting menu or something like that (you know, a tiny portion of something phenomenal) I don't want to share. Yes, I know your food is probably amazing, but I don't want a tiny lick of lobster coulis followed by a smear of foie gras. I want the whole thing. And stop messing with my beautiful little morsel by trying to cut it in half. Or quarters. Get your own.

On the other hand, if it's just my husband and me, we usually just eat half our entree, then swap plates halfway through. No cutesy feeding each other, but we've definitely had to explain to our server that we traded because we were so happy, not because one of us hated it!

Impromptu Taste Test: The Cult of Yakult

I loved these when I was a little kid spending summers in Taipei. My mom would buy a 5-pack (I think) at the street market from a guy with a cooler. It would last me all week. Now I pick them up once in a while at Uwajimaya. My husband thinks it's hilarious because I stand next to the garbage can and wolf down all five one after another, like shots. I don't even bother sitting down to enjoy them. Love them when I was younger, and I love them still!

Dinner Tonight: Chicken Fried Steak with Cream Gravy

I adore chicken fried steak! There was a recent article about it in Saveur (maybe in the Texas issue?). I love the tradition, the history, and the family element of it -- what a great comfort food. My favorite chicken fried steak story is that when my grandmother, who does not eat red meat, first came to America, she ordered items off the menu that said "chicken." Imagine her surprise when chicken fried steak arrived at the table. I guess her reaction is the stuff of legends!

CJ McD -- wow, can I hire you to be my personal chef? All your ideas sound so good that the diet doesn't even seem like such a big deal anymore. I think I might just be able to pull this off!

Thanks everyone, especially CJ McD! I think I'm going with a cucumber gazpacho, a beet or garbanzo bean salad, grilled veggies over polenta, and fruit for dinner. This will probably change over the next couple days.

My friend started this diet on the advice of her naturopath to discover any potential food allergies. I disagree with the naturopath's approach on many levels. My friend suffers from issues with low blood sugar, so I'm particularly worried for her beyond my foodie leanings. I've resigned myself to staying out of it, so I'm approaching this as a cooking challenge well out of my comfort zone.
