Is Street Food the New Bacon?

What's exciting about the foodservice industry is that there's room for (almost) everyone. While I don't think that gourmet food trucks will push all of the Mr. Softees or the Hot Dog Stand Man's of the world out of business, we will likely soon see fewer of the latter and more of the former types of businesses. There are only so many street corners, vendor licenses and consumers to be had. The roving eateries that offer what consumers perceive as a good value--and successfully market themselves--will thrive, those that don't won't. That's true now more than ever. Right now, a growing number of consumers think gourmet foods like artisan ice cream, custom cupcakes and fresh steamed dumplings from an restaurant on wheels offer a better value than hot dogs, sno cones and ice cream from old school street trucks or carts.

Summer BBQ - How to deal with something tactfully

I think there is waay too much over reaction to this. Most of the suggested solutions will humiliate the hostess and are guaranteed to end the friendship. Maybe the hostess is just overly excited about throwing a theme party and forgot not everyone else is as enthusiastic? Maybe she interpreted the offer to bring something as bring/cook anything? Or maybe she really is just rude. In any case, if you like her and want to go to the BBQ but don't want to try your hand at her dish, I say take the high road. Tactfully tell her that you are not comfortable cooking Mexican Brownies, and then offer to bring X (insert whatever favorite dessert you can whip up fabulously).

A List of Street Food Vendors Using Twitter

Just saw the Van Leeuwen truck this afternoon in Park Slope. It stopped me in my tracks. Sadly, I couldn't stop for a taste, but I'm so glad I now know how to find it--and so many others--again. I think it's going to be a delicious summer!
