Dear Food Network, Please Stop

Boy, I have thought about writing such a letter for a long time. Just about every time I look for something to watch on that channel in fact.

I miss Mario!! That was my favorite show. Nowadays the only good shows are the reruns of Molto Mario and The Barefoot Contessa, neither of which are even on anymore!

I watched one season of "..Next.." and wondered why. I didn't like any of the contestants, didn't like the show. And to think I got satellite TV so I could get the Food Network and HGTV (which is now just as bad).

And I also don't like their new "improved" website.

Restaurant Naming Problems

Looking at your menu does not make me think of home cooking. It is very eclectic. A lot of people who like to cook think they can open a restaurant, but let me ask you, do you know anything about running a restaurant? Have you ever worked in one? How about running a business? I certainly hope so, or finding the right name is the least of your problems.

Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?

My mom used to make these when we were kids - she called it "Sunny-side-up-whole-in-the-middle". Kind of a mouthful, huh?

I, too wonder about the thick bread pictured.

Eating Well and Cheaply: Any More Ideas Out There?

I'm simply shopping less. I'm not really how much I'm saving, but I used to go to the store almost weekly. I'd decide I wanted to make a particular dish and then need some ingredient or other and a trip to the grocery store usually means spending $50 or more. So now I don't go more than twice a month unless just for one or two things. I manage to make meals out of what is in the house, which includes a freezer full of frozen vegetables from the garden. I'm trying to make more bean-based dishes, using dried beans instead of canned, too. Someone said rice and pasta are your friends - but the problem with relying too heavily on those foods is the emphasis on carbs at the expense of protein and veggies - so be careful with that!

What is your table butter/baking butter of choice?

I like Land o' Lakes whipped for the table. I also find that the cultured butter has as good a flavor. Cook's magazine once did a test using whipped butter in baking, and found it was a good substitute - made cookies crispier. I haven't tried this myself yet. What is Plugra - is it a TJ's brand, or a regional one? (I live in the Northwest, but used to live in Chicago and have never seen this brand)

Cook the Book: 'The Sweeter Side of Amy's Bread'

It depends. If I'm feeling lazy or in a hurry then it has to be drop cookies- usually either Chocolate Chip (with Callebut's Semi-sweet chips) or oatmeal raisin.

But if I have the energy it would be biscotti or sometimes my grandmother's mandel brot.

And if it's holiday time then its all holds barred. Practically the only time I will bother with a roll and cut cookie, especially one that requires decorating.

Eating for Two: How Do You Love Sardines, Tell Me All the Ways

I, too eat them out of a can. I prefer the ones packed in mustard sauce, as the mustard hides a bit of the fishy taste, but also buy the water-packed and add my own mustard. I just smash a few onto wheat bread or a bagel. Eating them on bread also makes them more palatable for me. Eating them with hard-boiled eggs sounds like a good idea, too...
