Sal and Carmine's: A Post-Sal Pilgrimage

Thanks Ed. Like you, I would pass about 10-15 pie joints on the way from my apartment just to get one from Sal. Despite the ordinary ingredients, it was an extraordinary slice!

Keste vs. Luozzo

Thanks All.

Just returned from Keste and it was a big hit. 6 of us split 5 and it was plenty. We had
2 Margherita, del Re, Salsicca, Vegatariana

We all thought it was great. Crust around the middle was firmer than anticipated.

Sugar Rush: Raspberry Rugelach at Russ & Daughters

I'd put Zabars a notch above NJR.

Believe it or not, the pre-packaged rugelach from Delancey Dessert Co. (available at Fairway and, I'm sure, other supermarkets) is very respectable (and delicious)

From Serious Eats: New York

Sugar Rush: Momofuku Milk Bar's Arnold Palmer Cake

Wow - looks like I picked the wrong week to give up beverage inspired desserts...

Salumeria Rosi: One Man's Pleasure in Feeding People

Another great addition to the neighborhood. Can't wait to check it out.

Did Cesare bring his famous Tuscan Fries to the menu? They were the best at both Beppe and Maremma...

Does Your Grocery Store Have You Crying Tears of Joy?

I have the UWS Fairway about 100 steps from my apartment. No place I'd rather get my daily (artisinal) bread.

I have some Wegmans experience from Jersey Shore summers - it is pretty great place once you figure out where everything is!

West Branch, the Neighborhood Restaurant of a Serious Eater's Dreams

Great news Ed. When you throw that stone it probably hits my apartment. I love the short ribs at Ouest so can't wait to try this version.

Cesare Casella's Salumeria Rosi To Open October 15th

Great news. Another nice addition to the neighborhood. I'm hoping his incredible Tuscan fries from Beppe and Maremma will be available.

Managing the Line at Shake Shack UWS

As an UWS resident, I hope I won't have to wait too long for my fix. I have a feeling with the proximity to AMNH and Central Park, it will get its fair share of crowds on location alone.

Maybe all those brunchers across the street at Isabellas will munch on a Shack burger while they wait in line..

Who Makes A Great Roast Beef Sandwich? A Butcher Named Schatzie, of Course

Ed - looks great. The dressing indeed makes me shudder. How does the Roast Beef stack up against Fairway?

Rest in Peace: Robert Graham, Everyone's Best Friend at Fairway

Ed - Great post. He was a gem. We UWSers are lucky enough to have Fairway as our neighborhood store, and were even luckier to have someone so special as its maestro. I can still hear his voice..."next on 4 young man!!"

Ed Levine's Serious Diet: Week 6, Are Flavor Intensifiers One of the Keys to Losing Weight?

I'm not a fan of salad dressing, but folks in my Weight Watchers meeting swear by those salad sprays.

I also add a lot of spice to make sure i eat slowly - this is also a big must in consuming less. Last night I made myself a nice lean trimmed chili rubbed pork chop!

Ed Levine's Serious Diet Week 5: Can 'Start Living, Stop Dieting' Work for a Food Writer?

I'm a WW believer. I'm down 33 lbs. You really can't appreciate what moderation truly means until you keep track of everything that goes into your mouth. And the meetings are a great motivator.

Come join us - 7:00 tuesdays right in the ansonia! You have to use the 73rd st. entrance so you won't be tempted by Patisserie Margot on your walk!

Abitino's in Murray Hill

Agreed. We have enough C+/B- slices around that we don't need a C-! Besides they lost points with me when I saw the counter guy spraying the windex all over inside without removing the pies!

Abitino's in Murray Hill

we had an abatinos briefly on the UWS. it's already mysteriously changed name to pizza paradise or something lame like that. I guess lame slice, lame name.

The Best Black and White Cookies? Half-Moons? Amerikaners?

Ed - how were the 3 bites doled out? How one chooses to eat a black and white is right up there with how one chooses to eat corn on the cob.

I've always been partial to eating one side first - usually the white. Although I have taken the aggressive 1st bite right down the middle.

I prefer the minis for 1 sublime bite.

And by the way Ed, why did Greenberg shutter so fast in our neighborhood??

Ed Levine's Serious Diet: Week 1

Ed - not trying to be a shill here, but I've lost 27 lbs. so far (since late october) on Weight Watchers - it works. With a little planning, you could have had the pizza and part of a calzone with no guilt.

Come join us - 7:00 tuesday nights right at the Ansonia - it's right in the neighborhood!

Dean's Pizza Revisited

Ed - agreed. I dined there once and was underwhelmed. I've ordered in a few times and was very pleased with how the square pie traveled. They kind of give a half-hearted promise of 30 minutes or less as you hang up. I usually expect 45 and have the oven warming but have not needed it. Next time go for the roasted peppers. As a fellow resident in the west 70's, it's a nice option to have.

Pies Across America: Who makes the best?

Some recent memorable pies from my travels:

1) blueberry pie at abel's lobster pound - mount desert island, me

firm yet flaky crust offset by the oozing wild blueberries. better than the lobster

2) rock springs cafe - rock springs, az

a must eat on the road from phoenix to sedona. a tremendous assortment. i went all american with apple since it's my fave, and it tasted like it was baked expecialy for me that morning.
