Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'

cooking for dummies. I thought I was too dumb for even that because nothing looked good, or tasted good, but realised later that it was just the dead dull, uninspired ingredients and grade school graphics. I moved on.

pizza bianca. the reason d'etre of this celiac in deep, juvenile denial.

Cook the Book: 'Mrs. Rowe's Little Book of Southern Pies'

Who knew meringue recipes could produce chalky white head-sized rubbers that could be used to correct the arithmetic errors of an entire 5th grade class for the academic year?!!?!

Cook the Book: 'Bobby Flay's Burgers, Fries & Shakes'

The perfect patty must be swathed in mayo or one of its brethren sauces, and adorned with raw onion and pickles. Oh, and the inside of the bun must be toasted and buttered, just to up the grease/juice/fatty factor.

'The Next Food Network Star' Episode 4: The Face Whacking Edition

Seriously, have you seen a soap opera lately? At 1 pm there is copious undulating under sheets, curse words followed by face-eating.... but then it's all of the heterosexual variety.... Jamika's comment about "slaving in the kitchen would be the LAST thing on my mind if my husband was coming home" (or to that effect) was for more uncomfortable to me. Micheal was joking! She is serious, and shlepping! The gluey potatoes were a disgrace!

'Top Chef Masters,' Episode 2: The 'Lost' Dinner

@verysmallanna, my take on it is that Kelly Choi isn't allowed/encouraged to talk about the food. Maybe because they don't want to add fuel to the "who the hell is she and what does she know about food" fire? Just a thought. And I am also one of those rail think hated on Asian people too, and I love food. When I was pregnant, people would implicitly accuse me of starving my unborn children because I didn't show until about 7 months. We freaks exist.

thank you thank you thank you! My pettiness has been unduly rewarded. You have saved my laptop keys from many crumbs and crusty mayo as I no longer have to scroll awkwardly to find my place!

The Fest: Our Humblest Apologies to All

@kikimaraschino: holy crap! you have surely reset the serious eating bar for the year! I must now bully and torture the husband into aiding me to beat this. :)

The Fest: Our Humblest Apologies to All

I couldn't stop reading the train wreck of comments. I wasn't there, so many of you feel that I don't have a right to comment, and I don't. Not on the Festival itself. I do feel terribly for the attendees' disappointment, and like another person said, my heart is breaking for the SE crew because if you have been part of this blog for even a week you know how they try to be open and positive in how they handle every part of this great site.

Cook the Book: 'Modern Spice'

Indian, because frankly, my favorite Indian restaurant is suboptimal in the hygiene department and I must wear dark glasses to pick up my food in order to still be inclined to eat it.

Extremely Low Calorie Foods

PICKLES!!!! I didn't realise how low calorie they are until I sat there gnawing at them staring at the jar bored out of my mind. very filling.

@verysmallanna: I am always hungrier after fruit too. The acids and sugars trigger the release of digestive enzymes which do in fact "rev up" the system. It's not just you!

Which do you prefer?

Buffets gross me out as I childishly imagine every other diner sneezing into the mayo salads.
I love to cook, but a husband with amine intolerance, a son with a dozen food allergies make it kind of monotonous at times.
Fine dining is a nice treat because I encounter things I don't otherwise and become inspired at times, but I never "crave" it.
However my burger cravings often carry me across great distances for a certain burger! So fresh fast food it usually is!

Organic Foods.

I find no difference in grain products and snacks, other than the fact that organic products don't have artificial flavors that are sometimes overwhelming. For me, it's the opposite effect with eggs, meat and dairy: there is actually flavor. Of course that doesn't apply across the board. Plain ground beef tastes the same to me, but an organic, well aged ribeye?! No contest. Even my organics hating husband will attest to being shocked by the flavor difference in certain fruits.

Wasn't there an article about the different levels of vitamins and minerals in organically grown fruits? And the lab mice consistently chose the organic ones? Somehow the mice could detect the higher nutrient load. Does anyone else remember this?

The Organic Milk Business Has Gone Bad: Are You Buying Less Organic Milk?

@harstad. Wow. Your presumptuousness is impressive. You have no idea why people choose to consume organic milk. It's as presumptuous as an assumption that the juvenile tone and diction of your post means that you are a six year old with poor parental internet supervision.

The Organic Milk Business Has Gone Bad: Are You Buying Less Organic Milk?

Agreed on all points. I read the NYT almost as frequently as Serious Eats :) Very sad for those farmers who made a difficult and expensive choice to go organic. We were without income for the past year, but I never once bought non organic milk. We did without a lot of things, and bought conventional other things, but dairy and meat were never compromised. So we are different from the other families in the recession who have forsaken the dairy. We all have to make choices.

Who Makes the Best Vanilla Ice Cream?

I hated vanilla ice cream until I tried Alden's organic. I think it's Alden's. Black and white drawing of a boy. I love these ranking things!
@blitzcheetah: the root beer float insight is hilarious. I never even thought about it but you are right! the float with premium ice cream is too muddy/slimy or some such sullying factor.

Mixed Review: Dr. Oetker's Double Chocolate Mousse Supreme

may I jump on the bandwagon and applaud carriebwc? It really is so tiresome to read comments that really aren't relevant to the topic at hand. These reviews are about mixes. I read them because I want to know which mixes are worth a try. Please don't read them to stoke your culinary superiority complex and demean the rest.

I abandoned my ten month old daughter with my parents and drove across the border on a four hour ride to eat pizza bianca at my favorite bakery. for WHITE DOUGH, we endured border line-ups and a three hour wait for the stuff to come out in the miserable Seattle rain. Now I do the four hour drive to arrive at the right time for the bread to be ready.
