Cook the Book: 'Endangered Recipes' by Lari Robling

Most of my favourite childhood food memories are now beyond what I can eat- much later I found out I had Celiac's and am allergic to dairy, but as a child I lived for the mornings my mother would make me cinnamon toast. We had a house in Connecticut we went to on the weekends and for the summer, and she would often make us cinnamon toast for breakfast. Whenever I was feeling unwell there she would make me a soup of chicken broth with tortellinis thrown in- so delicious. I haven't had a tortellini in so long and making them gluten free seems a little beyond my cooking capabilities, but I might have to try sometime soon.

Another amazing memory was a caramel cake made by my grandmother's best friend in Savannah- it took her two days to make but she always made it whenever I came to visit. Now that is a recipe I need to get so I can adapt it!

Have you discovered any new amazing foods lately?

Pineapple- I've always hated all tropical fruits and would pick out pineapple out of any dish I was served with it. A few weeks ago it started appearing in all of my dreams, rather bizarrely, so I ended up buying some last week to try. It was so good that I've eaten it for breakfast every day since.

Not Surprising: Vegans Have It Rough In Airports

As someone who has celiac's and is allergic to casein, traveling sucks.

What's your favorite Chip/Snack and flavor?

Cheddar and sour cream ruffles are my absolute favourite but I'm not allowed to have them because once I do I need more and more and more. I mostly end up eating Dirty Jalapeno Heat potato chips and Baked Cheetos.

Sugar Rush: Sweet Rice Twist from Koryodang

Ahhh shit, I heard someone mention this doughnut before and I was so excited to try it since I was told it was just mochi flour, no wheat. Why does there have to be high gluten flour in it?!? Some of us are allergic! I'm so sad now...

Savory Watermelon Salad?

I add watermelon to my grandmother's radish salad recipe, and it is delicious. Just thinly sliced radishes, thinly sliced onion, diced fresh tomato, salt, minced garlic, pepper, finely chopped fresh basil, lemon juice, safflower oil
and a little parsley. I think I'm going to make some today!

What to dip my french fries in...

Hot sauce and homemade mayo!

My favourite thing back home in England is either curry chips/fries or gravy ones- or gravy and cheese! Yum!

What foods are uniquely '80s'?

Tricolor pasta always comes to mind (especially in a pasta salad- pasta salads were huge!)
Sushi.
Sundried tomatoes started being used all the time.
Anything from Abby Mandel's Cuisinart Cookbook or the Silver Spoon (so right!).
California cuisine.
Quiche.
Big League Chew (I know it's gum but it is in all of my memories as a child).
Lean cuisines.
Frozen french bread pizza.

The Ultimate Cleanse?

Oh, and I lost 15 lbs the last time- I gained around 7 lbs back within the first couple days, but since then my weight has stabilized and all of my clothes are much looser.

From Talk

The Ultimate Cleanse?

I've done the Master Cleanse several times and I love it- my boyfriend and I actually finished a 15 day cleanse two weeks ago, and I'm planning on doing another one soon. I just feel so much healthier when I'm on it and for awhile after it. The first few days are the worst- serious hell. This last time all I wanted were pork ribs- I had dreams about them, but luckily the cravings went away after a few days. I know it sounds crazy but the lemonade is actually pretty tasty, except I use agave nectar instead of maple syrup.
