Cook the Book: 'What We Eat When We Eat Alone'

For hot summer evenings, I love to graze on an easy no-cook platter for my solo dinner while I write a post for my food blog.
I slice up a few heirloom tomatoes and cucumbers, sprinkle with a bit of crunchy Kilauea black sea salt with a smal wedge of whatever cheese I have in the chill chest. I add a few Kalamata olives and roasted red peppers for the oily goodness and spice. With this I sip a some ice cold sparkling water with a dash of gingered simple syrup.
For dessert, my homemade fresh Lime Sorbet completes the meal and cools my palate after a long hot day.

Weekend Cook and Tell Roundup: 'Julie & Julia'

Wow...I wish that I had known about this "round-up".
After we saw the first showing in my area on Friday morning,
we went home and made Boeuf Bourguignon on page 318 of MtAoFC.
Yes, we ate late and yes it was yum...

I also did a "Julie & Julia giveaway" on my food blog to celebrate the movie and my one year blog anniversary:

http://feastingonpixels.blogspot.com/2009/08/happy-one-year-blogiversary-and-winner.html

A very inspiring movie for anyone that loves to cook,
and even those that don't...but just love to eat.

Bon appètit…!

'Julie & Julia' (& Nora)

Saw this movie on Friday when it opened here and it was a good movie for foodies of all ages.
Sure, I agree, it was not perfect, but there were some really good moments. Nora did an ok job mergeing the two stories, but Julia's story was the strongest, most watchable and relateable for me.
Perhaps it was the Paris connection.
Julie's story fell a little flat for me...

Julia was natural and totally unpretentious...
Julie was and is just trying way too hard.

That's life...you are who you are...
However, I wish her well.

I have loved Julia since I was a kid and follow her MtAoFC recipes in my own culinary work, so had to see this movie.
I think Meryl was the best choice to portray Julia, and IMHO did a pretty good job without the portrayal being too strange.

Cool and retro...wish I had a butcher in my chill chest to
meet my needs for veal bones for wanting to make stock at 2am.
Really love Al (in this( well who doesn't...lol...)
One of my fave episodes on Home Improvement.

On 'Nightline' Tonight: Art Smith, 'Oprah's Fave Chef'

We ate at his restaurant Table 52 in Chicago...
the place is really lovely...the food, well, not so much.
Amazing what Oprah can do...and not in a good way...

Olympic Figure Skater Brian Boitano in a New Food Network Series

Just don't know what to think...
Sounds a bit strange, but I will reserve my harsh snark until after I see a few shows.

How about a show with Aarón Sánchez...?
at least we would have some eye candy no matter what he cooks.

Cook the Book: 'The Barcelona Cookbook'

The pintxos, bite-sized tapas popular in the bars of Northern Spain at Cafe Ba-Ba Reeba in Chicago. The mushroom and rice croqueta and the short rib-stuffed piquillo peppers are to die for...!

Cook the Book: 'Bobby Flay's Burgers, Fries & Shakes'

Although I have eaten burgers all over the world, but as a Southside Chicago native I would have to say my fave burger is from Top-Notch Beefburger.
The meat is fresh and cooked to order.
My sister and I love to share the 1/2 pound Western Burger with fresh tomato, lettuce, Jalepeno cheese, bacon, BBQ sauce, grilled green pepper and grilled onions.
Mmmmmmmmmm...

Not diet food for sure, but a wonderful treat once or twice a year.
The best burger in the city of Chicago bar none.

Very disappointing presentation of a person I thought
of as an excellent chef.
I expected much more of him...really sad.

Serious Green: Planting a Container Garden

Love this post...
I have been growing herbs and flowers on the lower patio of my condo.
On my upper balcony, away from the rabbits, I have successfully grown tomatoes, lettuce, kale, peppers, peas, carrots and beans.
I always havest more than our family can use and it is wonderful
to be able to either share or can what I have grown.

I have already have my wonderful plantings in place for this season
and look forward to watching my food-bank grow over the summer.
