Dinner Tonight: Fried Egg Sandwich

When I was a very small child, my mother was bedfast, and a fried egg sandwich was the ONLY thing my older knew how to cook. Consequently, I ate much more than my fair share and in my later adult years, I could not bear the thought of eating a "fried egg sandwich". However, your version has helped me move on and enjoy this simple, yet wonderful, staple of American life once again!!! Thank you.

Grilling: Pizza

We "grilled" pizza on our smoker (Big Green Egg) last weekend. We had so much trouble getting the dough transferred off the pizza peel onto the pizza stone in the grill, we ended up just doubling it over and making calzones! I will definitely try cooking the pizza on a cookie sheet first and then transferring to grill. What a great idea - Thanks!!

Summer BBQ - How to deal with something tactfully

The proper response to this quandary truly lies in the writer's relationship with the "hostess". Is she a good friend or a family member? If so , bake the daggone brownies she requested and go. If she is not a friend or family - tell her no, but don't expect to be invited for any more bbq's.

Serious Heat: Homemade Kimchee

Can you make it with regular cabbage?? I have a garden full of cabbage and I can only eat so much sauerkraut.

Death of the Girl Scout Cookie?

When one hears "Girl Scouts", the next immediate thought is "Cookies!!", so I can see why they may want to broaden their image a bit. That being said, there is no reason to simply stop cookies sales. The girls learn quite a bit from selling cookies - salesmanship, responsibility, etc. - and the rest of get to enjoy a variety of yummy cookies!!

I'm so old that I remember (food style)...

I don't recall Bobby Sherman records - but I do remember "Archies" records on the back of Honeycomb boxes. I was not fond of the cereal, but I had to have the records!!

I'm so old that I remember (food style)...

I remember school milk that came in little glass bottles with a paper cap. I also remember saving the frozen oj "cans" and using them for hair rollers. My grandparents owned a neighborhood grocery and I remember filling a little brown bag with penny candy - my favorite were little flying saucer shaped things that melted like communion wafers and had little candies inside - and wax candy lips! I remember going to Hogan's meat market right next to my Grandma's store to get meat and 7-Up flavored pushups.

Weird parental food preparation

My mother was a wonderful cook, but she had a lot of hungry mouths to feed and she had to make a little go a long way. One dish we had often was something she called "Shipwreck". I have no idea how it got the name, but it was browned ground beef and onion, with a can or two of tomato soup and cubed potatoes tossed in. She then baked it for at least an hour (so the potatoes would not be crunchy) and then at the last minute, she would top it with slices of American cheese. I loved it as a kid, but my husband and daughter are not so fond of it.

Grossest thing found in restaurant food

My husband and I were dining in a small mexican restaurant on the westside in Cincinnati, Ohio. They made the best taco salads (with ranch dressing!!!). My husband was just about finished with his usual - seafood burrito - when he found a long black hair underneath the last of the burrito on his plate. We showed it to the owner/manager and she just shrugged her shoulders and said since he had already eaten most of the burrito, she couldn't comp his meal. We left, never to return. Thankfully, they are no longer in business - at that location anyway!!
