What's Inside a Slim Jim?

LOL This seriously made me gag a little. I had to sit the coffee down for a minute. To think how many 'Jims my dad and husband have consumed over the course of their lifetimes thus far... I never could eat them, the consistency skeeved me out, even though I always was intrigued by the smell.

I grew up in pig denial. I tried to convince myself that I didn't like ham, or pork chops, or pork loin, or BBQ.... I said, "I only like bacon". I don't know why. It's all delicious, and I actually choose pig over chicken quite regularly. Even my 2.5 year-old daughter asks for ham about every other week...we just had english muffins & Canadian bacon for breakfast. :)

McCafe: McDonald's New Fancier, Pricier Coffee

I got an iced mocha on my way to work on Sunday morning as I was running too late to make my own coffee at home. I thought it was swill... and for almost $3, was NOT worth it. It was completely full of ice so I probably got about 5 ounces worth of actual beverage. Like the article mentioned, I too thought it tasted more like chocolate milk than anything else.

I noted this morning though, I got a 32 OUNCE vanilla iced coffee at Einstein Bros for $1.79 (which is mad cheap for coffee around here - Philly 'burbs). And their coffee at least tastes half decent, as far as chains go.

Congrats! I've had mine since Mother's Day 2007, it was a total surprise from my in-laws. They brought it to my house and I thought for sure they just packed their own things in the big KA box!

Find yourself a simple recipe for good buttercreme frosting. You'll never eat frosting out of a can again! YUM :)

@TeriN - I'm totally going to bust out the KA book and check into these cinnamon rolls. Sounds fantastic!

Grocery Ninja: What to Do With Condensed Milk

I have to sincerely thank you all for this thread! For quite some time I've been trying to find the perfect balance of creamy & sweet to my coffee, without taking away from the coffee flavor itself... I've made dulce de leche for a favorite cookie recipe dozens of times, but never in a million years would I have thought to use sweetened condensed milk in coffee! It is absolutely perfect. Thank you, thank you!

What are your strange, secret and personal cooking tips?

I love the idea of asking future-MIL for some teaching-time in the kitchen! I should do that myself! My MIL is pretty cool too... I'm surprised I haven't thought of that yet!

I totally agree with all the tips above. The only thing I would add is to make sure you take the time to sit and read and understand the recipe. I can't tell you how many times I'm just skimmed a recipe to find that I've either not whipped an egg, or added sugar too quickly, or not creamed the butter for *exactly* three minutes... just because I thought a recipe looked "easy" & I could wing it. It's taken me a long time to realize that certain aspects of recipes are not always open to interpretation! Good luck to you!

Large-Scale Enticing Food Smells

For years I drove by the Nabisco plant in NE Philly smelling Oreos being baked. Much later my husband ended up working there making the Oreos so the smell came home with him (and cocoa powder all over him) too. I don't even like Oreos but any chocolate smell is welcome to me... which is why I love driving through Hershey, PA. They actually put chocolate mulch around the plants & trees... You can't escape the chocolate.

Back where I grew up in central PA we lived near a Strohmann's bread bakery too.. Oh there is nothing like the smell of bread...

@tangentrider - I don't know if I could handle riding past King's Hawaiian... those are irresistible to me!

Fries with That Salad?

I feel like there have just been fries on salads all my life, and I'm 32...but grew up in western PA... so... that could be it. :)

Also, plenty of liquor stores in PA are open on Sundays, & 6-pack shops are never a problem... you just have to check. It's not Prohibition 2.0...

S.O.S. (...on a shingle): Way or No Way?

WAY!!! Grew up in PA, Mom called it "dried beef gravy". Oh dried beef gravy night was the best... the toaster came to the table for dinner & my brother and I got to make our own toast (we were sheltered, alright?!?) and we thought it was AWESOME.

I still make it sometimes. But I can never find the perfectly round Armour dried beef anymore, it came in a little glass jar. I have to use the refrigerated packets now... not quite the same. :)

What scares me though is that you can actually buy (in my stores anyway) prepared pouches of "creamed chipped beef". That's moderately disturbing. That's one of those things that HAS to be homemade, IMO.

My Shocking Food Confession: What's Yours?

Ohh I too hate cilantro. It makes me so sad when I'm all psyched for a yummy looking salsa or guac & someone's gone and ruined it with cilantro...

I will eat a whole package of dried beef without even batting an eye.

When I was a kid, my dad and I used to cut up radishes & dip them in salt & eat really salty radishes.

My dad and I also (he's obviously a horrible influence.. love ya Dad!!) will sit and eat cheese puffs/curls dipped in horseradish mustard. It should not taste good but it does... uh, to us anyway...

This was a really informative article! Thank you. I've always wanted to do a side-by-side & had my hunches... glad to know I was pretty close. Your control stock looks scrumptious.

I'm not the stock-maker in this house... husband makes a delicious stock from a turkey & a chicken & makes the most wonderful soups... ahhhh I picked a winner. :)

Wow. Good wings + chain restaurant = oxymoron.

I understand why you chose who you chose for this, but I'll be ordering my wings Sunday from the biker bar down the street...I mean, even "Wings to Go" (a chain, but only wings) at least gives you a reasonable facsimile to a Buffalo wing.

About: Small-town white girl from Central PA whose palate until age 20 consisted mainly of chicken fingers & instant potatoes... met & married a lovely Chinese boy from NYC & a whole new world of delicious foods opened up right before my eyes.

Favorite foods: Anything Mexican, especially tamales... although I'm not brave enough to make them myself. Chinese egg custard tarts, homemade bread, coconut ice cream, strong coffee, anything cheese.

Last bite on earth: Surf & turf. Tuna & salmon sashimi, alongside an oversized filet, medium-rare, with a big ol' dollop of goat cheese on top. Followed by a giant slice of German chocolate cake.
