If I Could Only Eat at One NYC Pizzeria (Other Than Di Fara), What Would It Be?
@engmcmuffin: Nope, a grandma slice is not the same as a sicilian slice. If I say so myself, we described the difference pretty well at this link...
@pauliegee and mike: for some reason, I have been thinking about New Park since I saw this post in the first place. I've gotta go there really soon... :)
If I Could Only Eat at One NYC Pizzeria (Other Than Di Fara), What Would It Be?
@Sloppy and EngMc: Have I been out of Brooklyn too long? When did L&B start serving Grandma's?
Tony's Pizza Napoletana, San Francisco
While I agree with both of you on the pizza-tossing, didn't Gemigniani also win competitions in Naples for pizza making?
We're pretty eager to get out to SF and taste the pizza... especially after our disappointment at not getting to eat at Cheeseboard (they were closed for vacation) last time we were in Berkeley!

Openings: Nomad Pizza Co., Hopewell, New Jersey
Gentlemen, Lillian and I would like to join you. Paulie, what Saturday night are we talking about? At this point, our only Jersey pizza experience is still DeLorenzo's in Trenton, and good as that was, we need to taste NOMAD and we'd love to do it with other Slicers.
So when are we goin?

When Is Totonno's Opening? New Projected Date Is Late September, Early October
I went to high school in the neighborhood... now I only go to Coney Island after the season. The pizza is still great, and no crowds! Although I always loved the Cyclone.
Whenever Totonno's opens, why don't a bunch of us pick a time to meet out there?
Lil and are are still kicking ourselves over being too late to sign up for "Pieman's Craft" two years in a row... Somebody please let us know if there's a cancellation...
Leftovers: The Day's Stray Links
Oh my god, that is one bad-looking pizza. And if my appetite wasn't gone because of the picture, pizzablogger's description certainly took it the rest of the way!
Lapp, I can't believe you ate that. Talk about taking one for the team...

Dear Slice: Have You Even Fallen Off the Pizza Horse?
Of course, we've eaten some baaaad pizza, but Lil takes it in stride, and I laugh.
"Another slice of pizza in America..."
10 Perfect Pizzas
Lil and I tried Collosseo some months ago and really liked several of their pizzas. I'm not sure of the etiquette of putting a link here, but if you want to see the review, it's here: http://www.passion-4-pizza.com/colosseo.html.
Is Gianluca Holding Out on Us?
@Gianluca: Not to get too far off topic, but Mexican CocaCola (and, I believe, Italian Coke) uses sugar rather than high-fructose corn syrup, which is much more pleasant. Kosher-for-Passover Coke too (big difference from CocaCola the rest of the year). I was very tempted to have an O'Doul's (non-alcoholic beer) at Sally's Apizza last week (beer & pizza on a hot day still sounds good after 20 alcohol-free years).
@Pizzablogger: Pellegrino is a great choice; either the Limonata or the plain. We used to buy cases of it at Costco, but haven't lately. We'll get some before we make more pizza. Also wondering how the Jarritos tamarind soda would work...
Is Gianluca Holding Out on Us?
So what's the best pizza beverage for those of us who don't imbibe alcohol (neither Lil nor I do)?
A recent piece mentioned Pennsylvania Dutch root beer - that's pretty good. For something I can actually get my hands on, diet Barq's does nicely -- a nice nose and excellent bouquet!
Video: "Which Way to Paulie Gee's?"
Pizzablogger - nice video work, especially for a first attempt! Watched it twice, then I had to eat.
Paulie Gee - I am practicing the patience you recently counseled, and Lillian tells me that whining wouldn't get us to your house any sooner anyway. It all looks great as usual - and if you do go commercial, we will be there for the opening!
East Harlem Patsy's to Celebrate 76th Anniversary with 60-Cent Pizza, 90-Cent Steak
Hey, we just called ahead -- and we were told that they're not taking reservations for that day! We think they should, given last years fracas... but who are we to say?
Dear Slice: On the Topsy Turvy Realm of Pizza Rankings
@Adam: THAT's where I saw it! Thanks. With Lil and me, you can always assume we're hungry when we get there.
@Paulie Gee: I wondered that at DiFara's too: is this awesome or am I hallucinating from hunger???
Dear Slice: On the Topsy Turvy Realm of Pizza Rankings
I agree with all you guys! So far, every pizza ranking I see (even though I keep looking at them) just makes me dismissive of the writer who makes the list. Lil won't even look at rankings!
The "how many times" qualification is a great idea. Wasn't there a site at one time where each review also stated how hungry the reviewer was when he got to the pizzeria?
I'm glad to hear you won't do a list, Adam - but I'm glad you point them out to us when they show up.
Pizza from a Backyard Coal Oven on Staten Island
Well, we love the passion! She's taller than Lillian's grandma, but I would LOVE to taste Sylvia's pizzas...
So much pizza, so little time. Can you tell I'm hungry?
Frank Bruni on the Great Artisanal Pizza Boom
Paulie, if you open a place in Brooklyn, Lil and I want to come to the opening. And we'll BOTH be wearing this tshirt:

Frank Bruni on the Great Artisanal Pizza Boom
@Paulie Gee: saw the link and some of your Flickr stuff -- OMG! What do Lillian and I have to do to wangle an invite to one of your tastings? Given your passion for pizza (shameless self-promotion and a respectful nod), we need to eat pizza with you, brother!
Frank Bruni on the Great Artisanal Pizza Boom
@Coccodimamma: Frank Bruni = all New York Times and no pizza.
Quote of the Day: Di Fara After the Hype
It's a great quote and a really swell article written with grace and humor. I lived on Avenue L and E. 15th for a year or so before Lil and I got married (1980) and didn't even know DiFara's was there. Catapano's piece makes me wish I'd been blessed with Dom's pizza back then, before the invasion...
I Don't Even Know What This Means
LOL -- well, you probably know that a pissaladiere is the south-of-France version of pizza (but I have a problem ingesting that first syllable). I think what it really means is that Mr. Bruni is so in love with his own writing style that he doesn't know when he's being silly. Pissaladieres (or pizzas, for that matter) don't 'reach out to' anything. They're inanimate!
Is It a 'Plain' Slice, a 'Regular' Slice, or Something Else Entirely?
Throw this one in the mix: in my old neighborhood (Brooklyn) and where we are now (Long Island) - if you're just ordering a "regular" slice (of the New York- Neapolitan variety), it's 'a slice'. If you're also ordering Sicilian, it's "Gimme two 'rounds' and two 'squares'.
Of course it's not round, but there are a lotta guys in Bensonhurst who would injure themselves trying to say "triangular".
LaRosa's: A Tradition Cincinnatians Should Not Be Proud Of
@gschaefer: Adriatico's was better than Dewey's (the two places Lil and I visited on our one trip to Cincinnati), but calling it New York Style is a bit of a stretch. Dewey's reminds me of DiGiorno's, which is the best frozen pizza, but I wouldn't leave the house for it.
Pizzeria Boom Actually Harming New York Pizza as We Know It, Newsweek Says
I'm with moesizlacks (part of the way).. Totonno's is the best pizza I ever ate: I practically grew up at Spumoni Gardens, and I have no desire to go to Co., Tonda, Motorino...
I hope there will always be real pizza in NY... meeting a young guy like David Rizzo at Rizzo's in Astoria gives me a lot of hope for neighborhood pizzerias.
No Love for New Jersey Pizza, Richman?
Must agree about DeLorenzo's (Hudson St.) in Trenton. We really enjoyed the 'tomato pie' (cheese under the sauce - who'd a thunk it?), as well as the ambiance - '40's wood paneling!
'American Pie' Author, Renown Baker Peter Reinhart to Teach Pizza Class
I think Lil and I need to fire up our RV and drive to Charlotte for this!
When we first read American Pie, Lillian looked at his dough recipe and said, "yeah, that's how my grandmother used to do it. He knows what he's talking about."
