@steelecity..thanks for the research..I generally prefer the sauce rather than tomatoes but had some excellent pizza in SF this weekend that used heirloom tomatoes that were deeeelish!

Yeah, that is one gorgeous and tasty looking pie! So they use tomatoes on the margherita not just sauce? Hmm..did they finally end the garbage strike? where did you stay in Napoli?

Chris Bianco is and always will be the Pontiff of Pizza...Why they went to Little Dom's for pizza in LA is a mystery...though i havent been there(Oops), Mozza would have been a better choice...even if you dont have a reservation, the Mozza 2 Go next door is a great place to pick up a pie or four and eat it while sittin on the hood of your car....

Yo AK, Glad to hear ya made it to SF and had an excellent pie at TPN..Nice balance among the sauce, cheese and sausage...I wonder if the Chitown sausage is the same one that supplies Grimaldi's in Vegas and probably their other outposts too..A review of Picco in Larkspur is comin..was there friday nite..Bruce Hill told me hes been tryin to get you and Sr. Levine to come out...Scrumtious pies..local, artisanal suppliers of very tasty ingredients...more the "neapolitan" style...Depending on the ingredients, the crusts may or may not hold up but who cares...nice wood burning oven and a full service restaurant next door,too...chow

Pizza Hut Releases New Stuffed-Crust Pan Pizza

Right on, Mad Ernie!...this new pizza product is "sickening", both literally and figuratively...Just appealing to the lowest common denominator of the food service world: salt, cheese &meat. Im sure there's some sugar in it, too. AK, I know you're kiddin...

Who Likes Grape Soda?

Mission soda is the way to go...Does anyone know if theyre even still around? Mission grape ,pineapple and orange , kept cool in the candy store's cooler, with the filthiest water imaginable(well, almost), you reached in yourself and fished out your favorite flavor..Great when you're 8.

Slice Poll: Crust, Sauce, or Toppings?

Have to concur with Paulie G and those who feel the crust is the key...Its ez to pick tasty toppings off a lousy crust but whats the point of ordering pizza then? As Pepe Miele of the VPN and Antica Pizza in LA has told me..the crust is like the foundation of a house and who in their right mind would buy live in a house with a weak foundation. Amen!

Anthony Bourdain drunk on latest episode!?!?

Love his show and, as mentioned, there is a parental warning..but by the way, what is SF known for musically and gastronomically that he hates?

10 Perfect Pizzas

@pizzafreak...Yes,the whole revolution in pizza(toppings like bbq chicken,lox!..etc) that he spawned at Wolfgang Puck's Spago was all about the toppings, which us sophisticated pizza lovers realize seriously ignores the foundational role of great crust as the basis for great pizza...It's not too difficult to buy great, fresh ingredients but turning that into great pizza is obviously a formidable task.

Slice Poll: How Many Slices Do You Eat?

After suffering several decades long pizza withdrawal here in LA , I ate 4 Joe's fresh mozz slices(ordering one at a time) and loved it...they are very thin sliced though and I left less than disgustingly stuffed...I hesitate admitting that when I first went to the Las Vegas Grimaldi's(see my review here on Slice) I ate an entire half-margherita half sausage pie and was able to walk away without assistance and with no regrets!

10 Perfect Pizzas

I tried Caioti Pizza after reading about its history..Unfortunately, unless quality declined after Ledoux passed away, I dont know what the praise is about..Ive been there twice and left disappointed both times...Regular gas oven which I found surprising( not that gas ovens cant produce great pizzas) and the crust was not nearly baked properly. Here in LA, Mozza and Antica Pizzeria rule...Joe's makes a great fresh mozz pie..ordering extra mozz is the way to go, though...too much undeveloped crust acreage otherwise...

Is Los Angeles the Best Jewish Deli Town?

Well, I havent tried them all, but having grown up in NY, I'd say that Canters was probably the last deli I'd return to..Art's definitely nothing to write home about(or blog), Nate and Al's is better..Brents, though, definitely can compete with the best...Pastrami is delicious! I have to get downtown one day soon and check out Langers.

Tony's Pizza Napoletana: Pizza Paradise in SF

@shakaZOLO
I didnt think I claimed his Margherita pie was necesarily better than any of the other pizza palaces you mentioned...Ive only eaten at Delfina, Gialina and A16 in the City and I do think it was better than all the others except A16..Delfina was definitely delicious and I have no real criticism except that I think they need a wood burning oven..From what Ive read about the others, Im sure they all produce excelllent pies with excellent ingredients..My point was, adding Tony G's pizza to the mix ,SF, and the Bay Area in general, is a great pizza destination. The service for my experience there also was attentive and friendly but I dont doubt all these factors can vary...As I said, this was just one experience. Have you tried much of the rest of his menu?

Tony's Pizza Napoletana: Pizza Paradise in SF

@othafa9...I would say that it resembles some of the NY Neapolitan pizzas more than the strictly VPN- style...Actually, from a visual standpoint,it looks like pictures of a Mangieri pie Ive seen..Bottom line, I dont care how close to "true" neapolitan a pie is, if it's delish, its pedigree is irrelevant. The crust was definitely not solely crispy. The chewability factor was equally prominent.Wait a minute, I can be in SF in an hour...adios

From Slice

Tony's Pizza Napoletana: Pizza Paradise in SF

No implication inferred..lol....thats amazing that another excellent pizzeria is open...the more the better! now that Mr Mangieri's comin out, very interesting..wonder where his space will be..the City still needs a serious slice joint..

What Not to Order at Di Fara

@fry...I would go to A16 in the Marina as well, also neo-neapolitan style, woodburning oven..etc salsicca was awesome..i might order extra mozz on the margherita next time im there...Delfina and Gialina also very tasty though surprisingly, they both use gas ovens...

From Slice

Tony's Pizza Napoletana: Pizza Paradise in SF

@ Adam and Ed, thanks guys, yes, the taste of the margherita was flawless for my taste and it was foldable without cracking...I was truly ready for disappointment given the pizza tossing hype but this pie is seriously worthy.
@pizzalogist..All i can say is my review of Tony's has been sitting in Adam's inbox since at least last wed so i can guarantee i did not "collaborate" with Mr Bauer.
@foolishpoolish...actually, this pie unlike most Neapolitan pies Ive had used San Felice flour...the others do look a bit lighter..i dont know if Caputo is the reason.
I also forgot to mention that while i was eating at the bar I heard a bit of applause break out and I have to assume Tony was tossing dough. As long as he makes pies like this, he could be juggling swords for all I care...I only wish i could have tried more..the New Haven clam is certainly tempting!

@fry
As I just mentioned in my review of The Bay Area's Tony's Pizza Napoletana which will appear on Slice soon, Mr Gemignani has 4 ovens and offers many different pizza styles and options...I can only testify that the Margherita with sauseeege was impeccable...Im not one for loading down a crust with multiple toppings anyway.

Bob & Timmy's Is the Fifth Best Pizzeria in the U.S.?

I think Ed was simply behaving in a gentlemanly and restrained manner. If I had been served those pizzas I would have sent Alan Richman a nasty e-mail. The cheese aint even melted. Im sure I could do better making a pizza in my toaster oven. I can only imagine the pizza some of those other "surprise" pizzerias on Richman's list produce. Ugh!

From Slice

Bob & Timmy's Is the Fifth Best Pizzeria in the U.S.?

Well, Im glad a trusted voice checked up on Richman's bewildering and provocative list. I believe he ranked a heretofore undistinguished pizzeria here in LA,Tomato Pie, at #7, an equally unjustified and inexplicable ranking. Some people just like to push buttons, I guess. Or there is some kinda payola goin on. Or he's simply cracked under the weight of too rich a diet.
