Perfect cocktail for a BLT?

This month's Food and Wine had an article asking just this question. ie: what is the "bacon" of wine. Or rather, what wine goes with bacon. I think the answer was a merlot but it's Friday afternoon and I can't be counted on for accuracies. Check out the issue. It's in there.

'No Impact Man,' First a Blog, Now a Movie and Book

Wait, how did he blog without electricity? Too extreme. Makes being a conscious eater/consumer look like a whole lotta crazy. We need to take steps every day to lesson our footprints, but I don't think chucking our fridges, and quality of life, is the way to get this sort of movement as widespread as it needs to be.

Cheap and low maintenance for a crowd

I heart you guys for all your responses. I decided to go with baked mac and cheese (thank you, pioneer woman), a nice fresh salad and pork tenderloins with onion jam (from the kitchn), and a big skillet corn bread. I'm going to make ahead the corn bread and jam as well as prep everything tonight. Tomorrow afternoon I'm going to make the mac n cheese and simply refrigerate it for an hour or two before baking (this is okay, right?) and then while everybody is snacking on appetizers, I'm going to quickly pan sear and then bake my pork. The macaroni and the pork both cook on 350 so it works out awesome and everything else will be ready. Cake- purchased. I'm not a masochist!

Where to eat/farmers markets in Malden, MA?

If you plan on grilling at home at all, don't miss Dom's Sausage Company in Malden. They make their own sausages and they are seriously to die for. Also, where Dom's is located there is a great, inexpensive produce super store and also a large Super 88 market (hard to find Asian foods).

If you want to go out in Cambridge, it is close by. Also it's restaurant week here, so maybe planning a trip into the city to try a fancy restaurant at a cheaper pre fixe price is a good idea. I recommend Rialto at the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square.

Do You Eat or Email First?

Lord help me if the day ever comes when I feel the need to check email before I do anything else. I'd say that's like the first thing I do when I start my work day, but working comes after all important things like snoozing, stretching, urination, hydration, coffee brewing/drinking, breakfast eating, lunch making and packing, outfit picking out and putting on, makeup applying, teeth brushing and driving to work.

What one food mag should I get?

Between me and my moms, we read every single one, every single month. Bon Appetit is the standout. You will cook more of their recipes then say, Gourmet or Saveur (which are both great in their own way) and Cook's Illustrated only has, like, 5 recipes and is bi-monthly AND is more expensive then the rest. The only thing that bothers us lately about BA is that they tend to use these hipster models that don't really look like they eat much of anything. The food alone though is great, every month I read it from cover to cover and mark loads of good recipes, some of which can be followed strictly or just used for inspiration and interpreted in your own way, depending on what kind of cook you are.

Tasting Starbucks 'New and Improved' Items

I'm glad that the 'bucks is attempting to get a little healthier. But I would put money on the fact that the calorie content of absolutely everything is still totally outrageous. If you're attempting to watch what you eat and drink- go online, check out the cals for Starbucks' drinks and snacks and prepare to be blown away. The amount of calories and fat in a piece of their coffee cake is comparable to a burger from McDonalds.

Paying for someone else's party?

I do think it's a little odd. But maybe your friend's parents or whomever are throwing the party can't afford to do so themselves and need help. Even though the whole thing is a bit weird if it's a good friend of yours, I don't think 40 dollars for a couple is all that outrageous. I think that you would be hard pressed to find any place you could go for food and drinks on a Saturday night where you wouldn't spend well over that. Some times you just have to shrug it off and go support your friend. Especially if they aren't the one making the arrangements. Plus, I know I would feel pretty ridiculous missing out on a friend's party because I was "offended" at how the party was thrown. It's odd but it's not the end of the world to ask people for dough.

Serious Green: Plastic-Less Ways to Transport Your Lunch

I have an existing fork, knife, salt and pepper in my desk drawer. I bring my lunch in a tupperware (usually a container from take out that I wash to reuse), in a cloth bag. I pack homemade salad dressing in a teensy glass jar that was originally a hotel jam jar (you know like the kind with room service). I still use the plastic tupperware containers, but I wash and reuse, so that's not bad, right?

Serious Reads: A Short History of the American Stomach, by Frederick Kaufman

Thanks for this review. I just read this book and while the history of vomits as a cure-all was kind of funny and the history of feast and famine paired together was interesting and perhaps something I may not ever have thought of...when I finished the book I felt unsatisfied and confused by what exactly the point was. It seemed like a lot of interesting historical information but no real conclusion was reached. Plus the chapter comparing food TV with porn actually made me annoyed. I mean, didn't seem that groundbreaking to me. Don't we already call it food porn for a reason?

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 71: Do You Eat Only When You're Hungry? What A Concept!

Right on! I think you have really got one of the golden rules down. When you LOVE food it's hard not to eat whenever it's available. As someone who has lost 90 lbs and is the kind of gal who plots my dinner as I finish breakfast one of the biggest breakthroughs while dieting was figuring out that "there will be another.... brownie, cheese plate, bag of chips, pork chop, piece of pizza, etc." There will be more, so DON'T just keep eating because it's there.

Weekend Cook and Tell: Sandwiches!

I love sandwiches! And I feel like in the wrong neighborhood or at the wrong time of day, finding a real nice sandwich can be the most elusive thing ever.

One particular fave: avocado, cheddar, red onion, roasted red pepper mayo and roasted turkey on grilled seven grain bread. Ah-mazing.

I'm actually considering taking a day of work to try the sandwiches at Chacarero here in Boston because they're only open on weekdays. Would I lose a day's pay to try a sandwich? Well sir, that depends on the sandwich. Hopefully it's worth it.

Favorite foods: avocados, prosciutto, cheese n crackers, fried chicken, pizza, poached eggs, meatballs, spinach, greens, tamari almonds, corn on the cob, ripe tomatoes, sweet potato fries, coffee ice cream with jimmies...everything but coleslaw.

Last bite on earth: Fried chicken, mashed potatoes or perfectly cooked fries. With an ear of local corn and a refreshing adult beverage. Followed by a Reese's peanut butter egg, because for some reason the seasonal shapes of Reese's are far superior to regular ones.
