Michelle Obama: Should Our First Lady Also Be America's Chef de Cuisine?

jezebel commenters had field day with this one: http://jezebel.com/5274131/should-michelle-obama-get-back-in-the-kitchen and for once, i do agree with 'em. michelle used to cook all the time when her family required that of her, but now she's got a full kitchen staff to take care of something she thought of more as a chore (bummer that she doesn't enjoy it, but jeez! that's her prerogative!). why shouldn't she take advantage of that? i know i would -- at least some of the time. she's still sourcing locally and organically via her chefs, and "setting an example" via the WH garden. hesser's implications, though i think they really just came from a perhaps overly enthusiastic foodie, are dangerous when it comes to gender and even race issues. meanwhile, if michelle feels like sharing a family recipe or two, of course that'd be great! but you know what? she's got ample time for that, and, i have a feeling, more important things to do. she can't champion every single issue, right? check the jez comments for a thorough discussion.

My McDonald's Shamrock Shake Journey: An Emotional Roller Coaster

i went on a similar sojourn, and finally went DIY: http://flavorwire.com/14132/mchack-we-shamrock-ourselves

have to say, shamrock shakes are even better w/ the addition of a little creme de menthe!

Sabich Pita Sandwich from Taim

wow, i've never even *heard* of a sabich, but as a loyal falafeler, i think i now need to broaden my horizons -- immediately!

Indulging Your Inner Colicchio: Judging a Midterm at the FCI

really interesting post! thanks for the inside look. i also appreciated it as a refreshing and relevant diversion from reality-tv cooking shows and coverage of 'em. just the right kind of drama -- i didn't see mention of any students making out on a futon as they awaited their critique. insightful analysis, all around. well done.

Interview with a Grocery Store Shoplifter

i'm with @producestories. i didn't really find the article that interesting -- mostly b/c the shoplifter came off as a predictable ass -- but i'm standing by adam's right to post it. it had relevance; and not every.single.thing. on SE is something that i a) agree with b) find wholly fascinating....

Sugar Rush: Chai at Ost Cafe

i love ost. it's just a great little place to linger, and as you say, totally laid-back. also: props to the excellent music selection on the stereo. i heard beirut and andrew bird on a recent visit -- sure beats alanis morisette @ starbucks!

a very veggie thanksgiving

i second joyyy's comment re: 101 cookbooks. i AM a vegetarian, but i love almost all of her recipes -- and so does my carnivorous bf!

Good Veggie Burger in NYC?

def quantum leap. there are a couple locations (that i know of) in manhattan and the variety is pretty mind-boggling.

For One of the Best Falafels, Head to Ashkara in the Lower East Side

three cheers for ashkara! this place really is the best, whether i'm popping in on a lunch break or lining my stomach after (or, more wisely, before) a night of drinking on the LES. the salad toppings make it bargain -- although i too fail at properly proportioning them within my pita. their belgian-style frites aren't bad, either....

Help Me Please a Room Full of Men ...

i'd go w/ something you know you're really good at making. takes the stress out of the situation a great deal. i also agree that cooking southern food you've never made for southern dudes is RISKY. grilling is a great, safe bet. if you don't have a lot of outdoor space though, sticking a great lasagna or some manicotti in the oven (set it and forget it. haha) would be an easy and classic move, esp combined with a big summer salad and bread.

Sounds gross in theory, is actually good in practice...

it was no accident -- my vegan roommate introduced me to this sandwich when we were in college, and it's now my favorite thing to eat on earth (although i was totally grossed out at first): peanut butter, hummus, and jam. the hummus adds a wonderful tang to the salty/sweet combo of pb&j. she'll also pile on avocado, lettuce, and sometimes tomato, but i consider myself a pbh&j purist. oh, and it must be consumed in an open-faced construction. and crunchy pb is even better.
