Cook the Book: 'Zingerman's Guide to Better Bacon'

I'm a bad Jew. I like bacon (as do most of us, actually) becaue it's just salty, crunchy goodness that adds to any meal!

Cook the Book: 'Bite-Size Desserts'

I made little dark chocolate, almond flavored brownie bites in a mini muffin tin that had a ganache icing with toffee crumbles in it. But there are so many things you can make small that I love. Mini cheesecake bites too!

Mixed Review: Fantastic World Foods All Natural Falafel Mix

Oh I loved East Side Pockets! I've tried to explain the obsession to my friends out here (Seattle) and they just can't understand my love. Nor do they understand Spike's. I miss them both so much. As well as Thayer St. I used to spend hours wandering in and out of all those awesome shops. Thanks for the nostalgia!

What Weird Family Foods Did You Grow Up Thinking Were Normal?

I only eat french toast with granulated sugar on it. No syrup, butter, fruit, nothing. Just granulated sugar.

Ultimate favorite sandwich: cream cheese and jelly. Grape Jelly.

Graham crackers broken up in a bowl and drenched in milk for breakfast.

Not too weird, just not common. :P

Cook the Book: 'Bobby Flay's Burgers, Fries & Shakes'

I can't remember the name of the joint (I think I may have been 13 y.o. at the time and that was 20 years ago) but it was in N.E. New Jersey. It was very simple...Two slices of perfectly melted swiss, one on top of the burger one underneath, thick slices of pickle, 2 slices of peppered bacon and a kaiser bun lightly buttered and toasted to perfection. Nothing has ever rivaled it. Bummer.

Threadless T-Shirt Giveaway: Baron VonFunburger's Haunted Castle Cavalcade

Depending on where I am in the country and what options are offered, I have a few mainstays...in CA at In-n-Out it's an animal style burger, on the East Coast it's Nathan's hot dog nuggets, and in between it's an Arby's roast beef with a slice of cheddar.

Cook the Book: 'Modern Spice'

I have The Everything Indian Cookbook and I absolutely love it! I haven't fully conquered learning how to make Indian food in the home, but I'm on the way there and Modern Spice would certainly help!

Cook the Book: 'The Asian Grill'

My grilling story isn't so much as mishap as just utter confusion. As a youngster, my family always hosted the BBQs in the neighborhood because we had a swimming pool in the yard. And when we weren't at our house, our neighbors (my aunt and uncle) hosted because of the huge patio they had. Both of our homes had grills that were hooked directly into the cooking gas line that ran to our stoves. It was the only experience I had with grills and it was fantastic! And I thought it was the norm. Not so as I shortly discovered when I worked at the mess hall in my summer camp...charcoal is an entirely different beast. But I can work with anything now! Even just a campfire.

About ssdf23

Website:

Location: Seattle, but my heart is in NYC

About: I grew up 20 minutes out of the city, but have moved around since I got out of college. (That's awhile now) I do miss it, and will someday return 'home' but while I'm unattached and able, I figure live everywhere...as long as it's on a coast :P

Favorite foods: Indian food, especially if it has lentils or chickpeas. Chana Pindi is my suuuper fave, but I can and will eat anything Indian anytime. And Japanese. I love ramen. And soba. And sticky rice. Yeah, I can't really choose...

Last bite on earth: Potato and onion pierogies. None of that pesky cheddar cheese or any other additions. The pureness of flavor of caramelized onions in tasty smooth potato like my great grandma used to make. MMMM.
