Frozen Shrimp: To Use or Not to Use?

I live in California, so I have access to a lot of fresh stuff. Frozen shrimp is something I just can't do. It HAS to be fresh. I'll admit it... I'm spoiled.

Los Angeles - Near LMU

I'm with everyone above. There's not much near LMU as it's trapped in a residential area. But Venice Beach and Culver City are nearby and you can grab public transportation to a number of locations. http://www.bigbluebus.com/busroutes/

Don't miss Brennan's for turtle racing and beers. Yes, you read that right. Turtle racing.

Or if you'd like a fun divey bar, Prince o' Whales is a local coed hangout. (Or it was when I was at UCLA) Be warned. It is VERY divey. :) But those are the best kind.

Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?

Egg in a hole! :) Yum. Maybe I'll make that tonight, for breakfast for dinner.

What Do You Like to Read When Eating Solo?

I LOVE eating out alone! I have no qualms about being solo at the sushi bar (I've met some fun and interesting people that way) or getting comfy by myself in a booth. I generally read whatever is my source of the moment: whether it's Harry Potter (for the nth time), David Sedaris or even the latest issue of Real Simple.

V-Day Giveaway: Praise the Lard Box from Zingerman's

Bacon, oh bacon, you are my everything.
Always ready to be pan-fried; that sizzle makes my heart sing.
Come to my salads, my sandwiches, alone,
Oh beautiful pork product, you're the best piece of fat I've ever know.
Not everyone loves you, but those people don't know

Loving bacon is easy, even if those clogs in your heart grow.
Oh bacon, oh bacon, your taste is divine;
Verily delicious and wonderful and great and sublime;
Everyone should build a bacon shrine.

YUM. The photos of the tomatos remind me of the home-grown ones I had this weekend.
Huge gold and red heirloom tomatos + sourdough bread + pesto = delicious.

Group of College Presidents Wants to Lower Drinking Age to 18

I think if one is old enough to go to war and die for one's country, one should be able to drink as well. Perhaps we should just raise the age limit of military service to 21...

Fried egg sandwhich. Fry up that puppy, put shredded cheddar cheese on top to melt, toast some sourdough, add some mayo and voila! Tastiness.

Photo of the Day: Exploded Frozen Soda Bottles

We have a sign on our fridge at work forbidding anyone from putting sodas in the freezer. This is due to cans exploding three times in one month. We are a forgetful lot.

eating kangaroo is what turned me vegetarian for a year after visiting australia. I eat meat again, but it does not include kangaroo meat. (kind of chewy and tough, to be frank)

Starbucks Breakfast Sandwiches: Now Less Smelly

Ugh. I tried one of these "sandwiches" and it was HORRIBLE. The bacon and bread were both soggy and the "egg" made me long for McDonald's. The smell was the last thing I considered. Starbucks should stick to it's day job. (Especially considering the number of stores they're closing down...)

R.I.P. Some of Our Favorite 600 Starbucks

This is merely a drop in the bucket. 600 stores out of 3,891 nationwide and over 13,000 worldwide isn't so bad. Strangely, the two Starbucks that are a block away from each other in my neighborhood are NOT getting closed.

Cook the Book: 'The Food Life'

I'm in California, so I'm lucky enough to have access to all kinds of amazing and FRESH food. Of course, this can sometimes cost a pretty penny. My favorite place is Sprouts Famer's Market, a place with incredible weekly deals on produce. Just yesterday I bought 4 heads of sweet corn for $2, a deliciously ripe canteloupe for 99 cents, 2 cartons of strawberries for $4 and a head of cabbage for 50 cents. The fact that every person working at Sprouts is friendly and helpful also makes for a great shopping experience.

In Videos: The Off-the-Menu McDonald's Brunch Sandwich

1. That's just filthy.
2. I agree with Renee. The egg mcmuffin is the only thing I like at McD's (except of course, the french fries). They SHOULD serve it all day. This is why Jack in the Box is a superior fast food establishment. ;)

Our Groceries Are Quietly Shrinking

My mom taught me from a very young age to read the per ounce cost on the little labels in front of the food. It definitely had stuck with me over the years, especially in these trying food times.

About: I recently realized that I AM a foodie. When did that happen? I'm a graphic designer by day and a graphic designer/master chef of my house at night. (Trying to start your own company is hard when you're also trying to cook new recipes.)

Favorite foods: sourdough bread (Boudin's only!), toro, albacore, good beer, medium rare filet mignon, creme brulee, shepherd's pie, pad thai, yellow curry from Lotus Thai Bistro, meatloaf and mashed potatos, BREAKFAST.... too many to list here really.

Last bite on earth: all of the above?
