thinking back to 9/11 - a meal shared with friends.....
I remember going for sandwiches - my then-boyfriend had an appointment we couldn't miss - and being nearly incapable of choosing one. I ended up with turkey, and it was incredibly delicious, which just made me sadder. I was in Somerville/Cambridge MA and everyone was crying as they drove.
What's for Dinner? 09/03
We are going to a burger place tonight with friends, the Yellow Griffin. It's pick your patty (beef, turkey, veggie, pork, lamb, chicken breast, salmon hunk) and then pick your topping combination and side. I had a vegan lunch (some of the best food on campus, the once-a-week student-cooked vegan thing) so I will probably go for a meatwad.
I could eat ______ every day and not get sick of it.
Vietnamese cold rolls/bun. Authentic NY bagels. Bi bim bap. Toast or crackers with peanut butter. That's probably about it.
(I like carbs.)

What are you cooking for Rosh Hashanah?
I'm starting grad school on Thursday, work full time and am married to a Catholic, 500 miles from my family.
We have a challah in the freezer, but I wouldn't be shocked if we end up eating it with delivered rotisserie chicken from Swiss Chalet. :D

Toronto cheap eats
Nearest Timmie's is probably the one on the corner of Bloor and Bedford, a tiny bit west of the hotel.

Oh, Big Fat Burrito, how I love thee! Try the yam burrito, it has a really soft texture which may not be for everyone but it is SO delicious - you can have meat and yam together if you want the meaty texture. The pork is extremely tasty too. I haven't tried the ground beef yet but it is intriguing - have you had it CFG?
I just finished a Powerhouse from Fresh. It may have inspired me to never eat another prepacked asstastic university cafeteria sandwich again.

Usually at the Ribfests there are some American vendors as well as Canadian ones. I've been to a couple, you can get some good stuff.
I work at U of T. Wave to me! Heh. Things I like to eat nearby: sandwiches at L'Espresso Bar Mercurio on the south side of Bloor near St. George Station. There is Bar Mercurio on the north side a little west but it is mainly pasta and pizza and it seems to damn hot to eat there right now. http://www.barmercurio.com/ On Spadina just south of College there is Saigon Princess for cheap tasty Vietnamese, clean kitchen. Agreed on Pho Hung above. Vegetarian food at Fresh on the corner of Bloor and Spadina, I enjoy the Powerhouse bowl, nom nom. Greg's ice cream, mentioned above, is kitty-corner from there.
Got any other specific wants?
@lexophile thanks for the macaron tip :D
For the laddies- Hottest Food Network Dude?
@lexophile - we did the opposite, got the garde manger reservation but it was too late for PDC. Next time! Plus, just looking at the PDC menu made me feel like it was 15 degrees hotter than it actually was, with all that foie and such. We'll go back to Montreal when it is cooler...not hard to do, heh.
When Is It Socially Acceptable to Share Food?
Unless it is a family-style kind of meal - like Thai, Indian, whatnot - I am not much for sharing unless it is unusual or special in some way - but not for the reason you think. I don't mind giving up a few bites of what I'm eating, but most of the time, I don't want to disrupt the flavours of what I'm eating with something else. And mostly I only share that way with my husband, unless it's a close friend or family member - but those are really the only people I do fine dining with, so I guess that makes sense. In more casual places, unless it's say a gorgeous plate of fried seafood in Gloucester, MA - there's really no call for it. And please let me serve you a bite, don't stick your fork in my plate.

@bareneed - go for it! wheeee! i could go into more detail if you like, and tell you about the rest of the menu, i can probably remember a bunch more.
@hungrychristel the gravy was thinner, and probably made with seafood stock. i don't like regular poutine because normal gravy grosses me out on fries, but i really enjoyed this. big (and small, to be integrated) chunks of lobster, real curds.

Garde Manger is in Montreal (in the old city), sadly I live in Toronto! But we were there a week and a half ago, and oh, delicious. We sat at the bar, closest seats to the kitchen, best view of Chuck. :) Make a reservation.
Between two of us, we ordered: lobster poutine, salmon tartare, duck w/foie gras and apple cider sauce, bbq short ribs, deep fried mars bar, rocky road brownie a la mode. Caesars (the drink, not the salad!) to start, and a glass of chianti each with mains. We found the pricing to be quite fair. Everything was delicious, my favourite being the salmon, it was so fresh and the textures were beautifully varied, but the brownie was a close second, with nothing being very far behind.

For all the Canadians: Chuck Hughes! Cute in person too (went to Garde Manger weekend before last, mmmmm).
Egg-free ice cream
I never bother with the custard when I make ice cream at home - you just have to make sure not to let it thaw and then refreeze - eat it all at once with your family/friends :)
2 cups cream, 1 cup milk, 3/4 cup sugar (superfine granulated is nice for this purpose)
then add your flavouring - whatever you want. if I were making a chocolate base, which I usually don't do, I would just go ahead and melt a couple of ounces of chocolate, let it cool, and then blend it into the base with a stick blender. You can always add more if you taste the mix and it doesn't seem chocolatey enough.
But then I'm an improviser for everything but baked goods. :)
Would You Go to a Chain Restaurant on a First Date?
I don't mind some chains. One guy, almost 15 years ago, took me to a pho place (which was part of a very small chain) on a first date - I had no problem trying Vietnamese food for the first time, no problem with it being a chain, but being a pho newbie, I did wonder to myself, WTF, why is this guy taking me out for SOUP? Hehehehehe! Now I get it.
Dim Sum Restaurants in Toronto or larger GTA?
There's Dynasty near Bloor and Bay, and Pearl at the Harbourfront Centre. Both are a little more expensive than Rol San/Bright Pearl; the settings are nicer, and the food less greasy. Pearl has carts, Dynasty is order from the menu.
At Dynasty I recommend the Bok Choy in Supreme Broth (lots of garlic cloves, mmm) and the Pan Fried Rice Crepe in Spicy Sauce, or something along that line, so so good. At Pearl it is a more standard selection but everything is very well prepared. I think both are dim sum for lunch only.
Tim Hortons Comes to New York
PeanutButter, the sour cream glazed are my favourite too!
(I hate butter tarts though. I haven't lived in Canada all that long.)
Do you enjoy eating game?
Have tried venison, wild boar, goat (not game, but less commonly eaten meat in North America), buffalo, quail, ostrich...can't think of what else. Liked them all. I would try almost any animal as long as it was either raised for meat or properly hunted...but I do have a double standard for dogs, having grown up living with one. I know it is hypocritical; I'm OK with that.
Toronto dining requests
Two minutes' walk west from your hotel on Queen Street is Nota Bene, which is delicious and a step down pricewise from its peers in quality. Still not cheap but worth it. Do you have food preferences?
Cook the Book: 'Bobby Flay's Burgers, Fries & Shakes'
Can't think of an all-time favourite but my current beloved is from a Serbian grill place run by a butcher-shop owner - veal/pork burger on a lepinya (flat, crispy-edged bun) with lots of veggies and their house sauce which is mainly roasted peppers, onions and feta. Nom.
What's Your Favorite Ice Cream Flavor
Graeter's caramel (mostly Ohio locations), or anything with Oreos from Meletharb, Wakefield, MA.
Supermarket: I loved the HD Sticky Toffee Pudding with great passion.
Homemade, our greatest successes were peanut butter fudge (modeled on my next favorite from Meletharb) and Oreo cheesecake.
What did you get from your CSA last week?
I haven't joined a CSA yet, though we have talked about it. I just wanted to say how jealous I am of joyyy, since living in Ontario there is no possibility of my finding nopales in some future box (nor grapefruit but that's OK with me). Lucky!!! :D
A product that made me scratch my head. Would you use it?
We eat bagged/clamshell salad during the work week because we are more likely to eat salad if we do not have to fully prep the lettuce. I still usually make the dressing, and the other vegetables for some reason we don't have a problem washing and chopping. And on weekends, we visit veg markets and make fantastic salads with whatever is there, often not bothering to include lettuce at all.
Other stuff - well, we'll buy frozen meatballs for nights when we're both exhausted or rushing, things like that. Mainly we cook. I mixed a chocolate "wacky" cake in about five minutes this weekend (the glaze took another five once it was baked).
But for some reason, the bags of lettuce call to us.
Some potluck etiquette questions...
OK, my potluck picnic (mentioned in the "Are All Parties Potlucks Now" thread) was yesterday. We had a great time, I think everyone had enough to eat, etc. I had not asked anyone to bring anything specific, just to bring something to share.
Only I think three people actually made something to bring. Fruit salad, spicy cream cheese wrap spirals, and guacamole, all of which were delicious. Some of the purchased items were clearly planned - one person brought bread, old cheddar and grapes, for example. Others simply picked up something that would be easy to eat outside - chips, whole fruit, pastries, drinks.
My husband and I had picked up some sandwich makings, salsa, spinach dip, chips, and I made a chocolate wacky cake, which is vegan, since we have some vegan friends and one who is allergic to dairy (truly allergic as opposed to our lactose intolerant friend who can usually tolerate a cake made with a little dairy). I had made an effort not to have total control over the food but I didn't want anyone to be hungry either.
Not judging anything here (except the deliciousness of the things people made! yum), just saying that everyone is different, has a different idea of what is delicious or what is picnic food, has a different budget, has a different thing they are craving that day. Everything was at least partially eaten (we could not have finished everything!). I don't think anyone felt excluded or like they put in too much work compared to anyone else.
As long as everyone had fun and no one left hungry, I'm pleased.
