Cook the Book: Cowgirl Cuisine

When I go home, I always ask my mom to make oxtail soup and nian gao (chinese rice cakes), among other tasty tasty things. we always ate nian gao at chinese new year, and her oxtail soup is just the tastiest stuff ever. I have fond memories of eating bowls and bowls of it.

Favorite "unlikely" food combos?

my roommate in college always told me peanut and roast beef go really well together in a sandwich. it's actually not half bad!

Cook the Book: 'Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant'

when there isn't much in the fridge, i just end up scrambling 4-5 eggs and mixing in whatever's around (cheese, meats, veggies). my friends tell me it's kind of gross and probably bad for me, but i really like it!

Who's your most/least favorite food personality on Food Channel?

i love mario! his food always looks amazing, and he's so knowledgeable and fun. i'm so jealous of the people who get to chat with him at the counter and EAT.

like everyone else, i can't stand sandra lee. the worst thing is turning the channel to the food network and seeing her! "change the channel! change the channel!"

Question of the Day: Snap! We love crisp food.

i really like the crispy rice at the bottom of one of those really hot stone bowls you get at korean restaurants. after a tasty meal, i use my spoon to break it up and eat it like chips.

Eating in China- any tips?

i spent a summer in beijing and found that almost all the food i ate was delicious! just avoid really touristy places and take a walk around. if you see lots of locals eating somewhere, that's always a good sign. but i found most of the quieter restaurants were still really tasty. my favorite dishes in beijing were actually all the eggplant dishes. they are oh so oily, but oh so soft and delicious. just as a side note, it took me a few weeks to adjust to the amount of oil the people in beijing cook with. i mean, i'm chinese and eat chinese food everyday, but never with so much oil in the U.S. my stomach wasn't so happy at first, so you might have to be prepared for that!

Cook the Book: 'The Perfect Scoop'

my favorite frozen dessert has to be the banana ice cream at holotta ice cream in honolulu. it has the perfect texture and flavor, and no other ice cream has come close to it.

Have you tried any new ice cream flavors lately?

i tried asparagus ice cream. it was not too tasty though, probably because it tasted very much like asparagus. yuck! i did have the most amazing life-changing banana ice cream though. it was at a place called holotta ice cream on oahu (pearlridge mall).

canned chicken broth. i love the comfort of soup, but i don't have time to make actually make my own chicken broth. sometimes i can use it in stir-fry sauces too for some flavor.
