'What We Eat When We Eat Alone'
I live alone and eat most of my meals alone and cook on almost a daily basis. For those "lazy days" though, favorites are rice with soy sauce and sesame oil, cold soba, frozen dumplings, cheese quesadillas, or just grapes and cheese and crackers.
Is It a 'Plain' Slice, a 'Regular' Slice, or Something Else Entirely?
I think I either say just "plain" or just "slice." As in, "Can I get 2 plain" or "Can I get a slice" or something along those lines. I grew up in NY but no longer live there so now I'm probably overthinking it.
Possibly the Coolest Sport Ever: Cheese-Rolling
They did do this on the Amazing Race this season. They were actually supposed to carry the cheese, but they were so heavy that a lot of people ended up chasing it down the hill. Out of control cheese is too funny!

Potbelly Sandwich Works: Big Sandwiches for a Small Price
Hm I'm a relatively small person also but I've never had any problem finishing a Potbelly sandwich by myself...with chips and/or a milkshake alongside. I suppose I'm a big eater! Also, I really like the Wreck.
@DanielJ: Ditto, definitely no lettuce and tomato on a meatball sub!

What Does Your Fridge Say About You?
Can I ask what's bad about bags of fresh grapes on the top shelf? Am I completely clueless?
Cook the Book: ''Wichcraft'
Never been to wichcraft but my favorite combination as of late has been chicken/turkey, brie, and cranberry sauce on grilled or toasted bread.
Store-Bought Chicken Stocks, Reviewed: Which Are the Best?
For someone who likes and makes as much soup as I do I should probably be making my own stock but it's always seemed like a chore to me. I'll do it someday I suppose, but my standard is the Swanson Natural Goodness kind. I'll have to try the Swanson Stock now. But I do think adding some carrot, onion, and celery to most canned broths improves the taste quite a lot. Also definitely agree that water or a quick "vegetable simmer" doesn't really cut it. I like Bittman (somewhat dislike Ruhlman though) but don't agree with him on that.
Tropicana, Pepsi Overhaul Packaging
I'm not colorblind either but I definitely think the different varieties look too similar. I get the calcium kind and I'd gotten really used to just grabbing the carton with the blue top and cap, but I was at the store today and I had to look a lot more closely to pick out the one with the thin blue stripe.
Is a Small Kitchen an Excuse for Bad Cooking or Not Cooking at All?
If you want and like to cook, you'll do it no matter the size of your kitchen. But if you're someone who doesn't really cook, a small kitchen is definitely not going to encourage you to start...
McDonald's Filet-O-Fish: Yea or Nay?
I too kind of love it too but always forget it exists. I don't go to McDonald's too often nowadays but when I do it's kind of a nice treat...oh, I can get a Filet-O-Fish!
What Pizzerias the Gossip Girls and Boys Would Frequent
This is so awesome. Though the only place mentioned I've been to is Grimaldi's and my own tastes are probably closest to Nate's...now that I don't live in NYC anymore, when I come back pretty much any New York pizza will suffice.
Cook the Book: 'How to Cook Everything, Revised Tenth Anniversary Edition'
I have The Best Recipes in the World and really love his simplified Thai/Southeast Asian recipes.
Also made his clafoutis (with clementines) and loved it, though my parents were a little perplexed by it...
'Top Chef' Season 5, Episode 3: Food Fighters
I have to say I'm a little disappointed that they went to Rochester and did not go to Wegmans! I suppose it had something to do with the big Butterball section that needed to be set up...
Snapshots from the UK: How the English Eat
My first exposure to the "European method" was during college when I did an internship with a bunch of students from France. I've always kind of had confusion with the whole fork and knife in which hand thing, especially since I grew up in an Asian household where the default utensils are spoon and chopsticks, so I was totally fascinated by the way they positively couldn't eat without both fork and knife and how they were always pushing food onto their forks with their knifes. (They once invited us over for dinner and served this salad with corn and other small pieces and I definitely saw the merits of that method...)
I definitely didn't know about this British thing though, and it seems like...a lot of work. Also I've met quite a few people who hate foods touching on their plates so I imagine the thought of this method would give them a panic attack...
Snapshots from the UK: Turkish Delight
I too grew up wondering what the heck Turkish Delight was and didn't find out what it was or taste it myself until a few years ago. My interest was re-piqued when I saw the movie and a few days later I was in Economy Candy and there it was! After like 15 years of expectation it was kind of disappointing but I like jelly candy so it was alright. I thought the rose flavor was a little strange though.
In Defense of Breakfast: A Morning Manifesto
I get up early so can't wait until lunchtime to have my first meal of the day. I can't eat the same thing for breakfast every day though and sometimes have trouble coming up with things to eat. I was in a yogurt and fruit phase for awhile but now I'm kind of in a rut and have been heating up rice or pasta from the night before.
Does Your Grocery Store Have You Crying Tears of Joy?
My first Wegmans was in Ithaca where I went to school but I've also lived in Rochester where there's a Wegmans everywhere you go. The flagship store in Pittsford is fabulous. Nowadays I live in Maryland and miss it terribly. My brother lives near one in NJ and I always make an excuse to go there when I visit though...it just makes me so happy!
Cook the Book: 'Barefoot Contessa Back to Basics'
Everyone really likes my chocolate chip cookies and blueberry muffins. No non-baked foods yet though...I'm still kind of afraid to cook real food for people!
Apples: Take 'Em or Leave 'Em?
Growing up we only had Red Delicious and Fuji apples around and I kind of hated them. But I've since discovered the Gala and Honeycrisp and Pink Lady which are great. I still don't really like just eating them whole though...gotta peel and slice them.
Cook the Book: 'Giada's Kitchen'
I haven't quite mastered making it quite yet, but my favorite is carbonara. Runner up is a good marinara.
Robert Irvine Fired from the Food Network
It's pretty terrible that he lied about that stuff but I really liked him on Dinner Impossible...does "looking for a replacement host" mean that they're keeping the show though?
Cook the Book: 'The Martha Stewart Living Cookbook: The New Classics'
I have a subscription to Everyday Food so I've made quite a few things from there. And I made her pumpkin cupcakes with cream cheese frosting for a work party a couple of weeks ago.
Hittin' the trail...mix that is..
I like the Trader Joe's Sweet, Savory & Tart Trek Mix. I recognize it's not terribly healthy, with chocolate, white chocolate, and peanut butter chips along with the raisins and nuts, but it's yummy and a nice pick-me-up at work in the afternoon.
Desserts I don't like...
I really dislike tiramisu or anything with the slightest bit of coffee or mocha flavor. Also not a fan of cannolis...
What's Your Favorite Local Ice Cream?
I lived in Rochester, NY for one summer and I was pretty obsessed with Abbott's Frozen Custard. We got it a couple of times a week at least (I know, really healthy).
